Youngsters from the finest families at home, abroad

YEARLINGS from some of the finest families in Australasia and Europe make up a select Easter draft for Bell View Park Stud, and the farm’s Adam Mackrell is looking forward to showcasing colts and fillies by “a nice mix of stallions”. Building up its quality broodmare band since 2010, the Meroo Meadow stud will take six yearlings to Easter with Mackrell confident the youngsters will all find good homes.

“We are genuine sellers,” he said, proud all of Bell View’s 2015 Magic Millions and Classic yearlings were sold. “We price them to meet the market and we are excited about our Easter draft.”

Kicking off Bell View’s sale is Lot 109, a Darci Brahma filly out of the stakes placed High Chaparral (IRE) mare Prairie Star, a winner of five races. A descendant of the influential matriarch Frizette (ancestress of Mr. Prospector and Seattle Slew), she is the first foal of a talented performer whose dam is the excellent broodmare Maryann Jones, dam of Listed winner Marianne and the stakes placed Our Miss Jones, both also by leading NZ based sire Darci Brahma (Danehill).

Her third dam is the twice Gr.1 placed Madonna who produced the South African Gr.2 winner Dylan’s Promise. Bred on a 5fx4f cross of Nureyev, she also carries a strain of that stallion’s three-quarter brother Sadler’s Wells, providing multiple crosses of the influential mare Special. “She is a strong, robust filly,” Mackrell said. “She is a nice walker and she is a filly with a real look of a racehorse about her. I am quietly confident she will perform well on the track.”

Next up for Bell View is Lot 183, a chestnut daughter of Street Cry (IRE) and the Galileo mare Sidereus Nuncius, a winning daughter of the NZ dual Gr.1 winner Foxwood (Centaine), whose nine to race have all been winners including the Frank Packer Plate-Gr.3 winner Rockwood and the stakes placed gallopers Miss Foxwood and Quartz Reef. A filly with terrific residual value, she hails from one of Australasia’s finest families, that of the big race winners Lonhro, Niello, Mahaya, Sovereign Red, Gurner’s Lane and Trichelle. “She is a nice filly with plenty of scope. Obviously she is going to take a little bit of time being more of a classic type.”

Lot 196 is the first of Bell View’s two Easter colts by dual W.S Cox Plate-Gr.1 winner and international champion So You Think (NZ). This colt is a son of Al Maher mare Soft Landing, whose dam

is the excellent broodmare Biscay Bird (Bluebird). Her seven winners include the four times Gr.1 winner Universal Prince (AJC Derby, Spring Champion Stakes, Canterbury Guineas, Ranvet Stakes) and his Gr.1-winning sister Universal Queen (Robert Sangster Stakes), both by Scenic (IRE) (Sadler’s Wells).

Biscay Bird’s half-brother Blevic (a successful stallion and also by Scenic) was also high class, winning two Gr.1 races, the VRC Derby and the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes. A descendant of influential mare Aurora, this colt boasts interesting pedigree patterns with his sire bred on a Mill Reef/Nijinsky II cross and his dam’s pedigree featuring the reverse of that cross.

“He is a big imposing colt with plenty of scope, size and substance. The Sadler’s Wells line has performed so well with this family so his grandson was a logical choice for the mare.”

Lot 301, a bay or brown filly by champion stallion Redoute’s Choice, is the second foal for Shinko King mare Barinka, an outstanding racemare who won eight races including the NZ Breeders Stakes-Gr.1 and four Listed events. A descendant of famed matriarch Eulogy, this filly boasts parents bred on the same Northern Dancer/Sir Ivor cross, and it’s worth noting Redoute’s Choice excels when those two great stallions are duplicated. “She is a very athletic, well balanced filly typical of the Redoute’s Choice breed. She is a nice walker and a natural running type who should not take too long.”

Bell View’s second So You Think colt is Lot 357, whose dam is the high class race mare Dariana (Redoute’s Choice), a classic winner of three races. Boasting duplications of Mill Reef and Nijinsky II, he is the first foal for Dariana who racegoers will remember racing away to a 4.5 length victory in the Queensland Derby-Gr.1.

Dariana’s dam is the stakes placed imported Last Tycoon mare Beldarian (IRE), also dam of the Gr.3 placed Macduff and from the immediate family of the Gr.1 gallopers Weymss Bright (Irish Oaks), Beat Hollow (Champion Three Year-Old in France), Reefscape (Champion Three Year-Old Stayer in France), Oasis Dream (Champion Sprinter in Europe), Zenda (French 1000 Guineas) and the recently retired star Kingman. Now at stud at Juddmonte at Newmarket, Kingman was crowned Cartier Horse of the Year (from candidates including Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe-Gr.1 heroine Treve) on the back of his four victories at Gr.1 level. “He is a real Derby sort, a horse with plenty of scope and plenty of leg. He has a nice, long, athletic walk and he will mature into a really nice three year-old.”

Bringing Bell View’s Easter sale to a close is Lot 567, a filly by in-form Golden Slipper Stakes-Gr.1-winning stallion Sebring out of the imported Maria’s Mon mare Ma Famille (USA), a half-sister to the UK Gr.3 winner Dundonnell who is also a multiple winner in Hong Kong. Ma Famille’s dam Family (Danzig) is a sister to the great Danehill and Sebring is of course out of a mare by Danehill’s son Flying Spur, providing this filly with a 4x2 cross of siblings Danehill and Family. This is also the family of Sebring’s great-grandsire Halo.

“She is a very nice walker with a large over-reach,” Mackrell said. “She is an attractive, athletic filly with real quality and she is a valuable future broodmare prospect, being from such an outstanding international family.”
