“EASTER is Easter,” said Bowness Stud’s John North when asked to describe the quality of the stud’s 2015 draft, “they are all good! Yearlings entered for the Easter Sale have to present well at inspection to get in, and I am extremely happy with our group who have all progressed extremely well since that time, they look great.”

Bowness is consigning four of its own yearlings to Easter and has prepared the nine strong draft for Bert Vieira’s Vieira Group and the two drafts will be accommodated alongside each other in Stable 2 at Newmarket.

Bowness Stud draft

Bowness Stud’s busy Easter Sale kicks off early with Lot 3, an Exceed and Excel filly from the winning Encosta de Lago mare Kiss Off. Bred on the same Exceed and Excel/Encosta de Lago cross as the stakes winners Instinction, Ghost and Mohave, she is a half-sister to the multiple winner Long Kiss and out of a winning daughter of the NZ stakes winner Kiss N’ A Shilling. “She is our best filly,” North noted, adding, “she is a strong, robust yearling by a dominant two year-old sire. She is just a beautiful type.”

Considered by North to be his draft’s best colt, Lot 444 is by Medaglia d’Oro (USA) out of Idriess (Anabaa). Boasting a 6mx7m cross of the great mare Lalun, he is a half-brother to the promising No Luck Needed and out of a half-sister to the speedy multiple stakes winner Karuta Queen. Hailing from the family of recent stakes winner Vain Queen and the Caulfield Guineas-Gr.1 hero Vitalic, he is “a real classic type,” according to North. “He is a beautiful athlete and built like a sprinter with great natural muscle and perfect legs. He is a strong colt with a great attitude.”

Lot 454 is a Foxwedge colt, the second foal of Isn’t She Fabulous (Fusaichi Pegasus), a half-sister to the Gr.1 winner Pear Tart. Bred on a 4mx4f cross of Danzig, he also carries duplications of the influential mares Natalma, Almahmoud and Myrtlewood and he is a descendant of the noted matriarch Fanfreluche (as are Flying Spur and Encosta de Lago). John North said this youngster is “a big strong, correct athletic colt who stands over a fair bit of ground.”

Last on offer from Bowness is a bay filly by first season stallion Helmet, Lot 583, and her winning dam Pan’s Flute (Lonhro) is a daughter of the Gr.2 winner Syrinx, in turn a daughter of Listed winner Whistling who also produced the stakes winners Whistle Up and Noise. Boasting crosses of Danzig and Mill Reef, she can also count amongst her relations the stakes winners Rich Dragon, Tinamou and Happier. “She is a neat, tidy filly who is very correct in the legs.”

Vieira Group draft – prepared by Bowness Stud

Sydney businessman Bert Vieira has formed a strong association with Bowness Stud and this Easter draft is further evidence of his growing commitment to the breeding sector. Already very successful as an owner, Vieira has really tackled the breeding side with enthusiasm.

First into the ring for the Vieira Group draft is Lot 83, a colt by Casino Prince out of Ocean Bridge (Dolphin Street). Described by North as “an outstanding colt”, he is a brother to the Gr.2-winning mare Longport, who is twice runner-up at Gr.1 level, and a half-brother to the Listed winner Run For Wilson. He is out of a multiple city winner who was also fourth in an Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1 and from the family of stakes winners Fuss and Backbone.

Vieira has been a good supporter of Fastnet Rock’s Gr.1-winning son Foxwedge and three of his first crop yearlings make their way to Easter in his draft, the first being Lot 342, a filly out of the More Than Ready mare Coeur d’Amour. “She is a lovely, big strong filly and is out of a mare who has already produced a promising type in Stryking Love by a son of Fastnet Rock”. Danehill and More Than Ready combine so well and this filly is out of a city-winning half-sister to the Gr.1 placed stakes winner Upstaged.

North believes Lot 530 has thrown more to her damsire Zabeel. This bay daughter of Foxwedge is out of Claystone, a half-sister to the stakes winners Walking or Dancing and Irongail and to the dam of South Australian Derby-Gr.1 winner Kidnapped. Hailing from the prolific Courtessa family that produced Eight Carat, she is “an athletic filly with scope who should get over a classic distance.”

The last of the Foxwedge yearlings for Vieira and the draft’s final Easter yearling is Lot 596, a son of Purity (Ferocity). Bred on a 3mx4m Danehill cross, he is the second foal of a daughter of the high class race and broodmare Bold Promise (Luskin Star), triple Group-winning dam of the Gr.1 gallopers Merlene (dam of Merlene de Lago and grandam of Dear Demi) and Miss Pennymoney. “He is more in the mould of Foxwedge himself, an athletic strong-topped colt.”

Fellow proven Danehill line stallion Stratum is the sire of Lot 412, a chestnut daughter of the speedy stakes winner Follow The Till (General Nediym). Bred on a 3fx5f cross of Luskin Star, she is a half-sister to the city winners Zed Man and In The Sky Rocket. “She is a nice, compact well made filly. Her sire and dam are like that also and they both had motors.”

Another good-looking colt is Lot 468, by the popular I Am Invincible out of the Catbird mare Sexyaz. Boasting duplications of three great mares, Natalma, Somethingroyal and Relance, within seven generations, he is out of a four times-winning mare from the family of stakes winners Permai and Permaiscuous. “He is a very nice colt, good sized, good boned and good muscled with a lovely temperament.”

Through the ring not long after will be Lot 477, a Sebring filly who is the second foal of the triple winner Survival (Lonhro), a grandaughter of the multiple Group winner Delightful Belle, dam of the Golden Slipper-Gr.1 heroine Belle du Jour. Carrying a 4mx4m Danehill cross, she is a filly with “plenty of bone and muscle, built in the More Than Ready mould.”

The first crop yearlings by champion sprinter Dream Ahead are attracting attention and the Vieira Group has Lot 553, a colt out of the imported Indy Game (USA) (A. P. Indy), a half-sister to the four times Group winner King Cugat and three-quarter sister to the Gr.3 galloper El Crespo, from a strong US family that produced the outstanding stallion Seeking The Gold. “He is a nice, tall, strong colt who has thrown to his sire. He is a well grown athlete.”

Commands has sired more than 750 winners (66SW) and this deceased Danehill son has a nice yearling, the second to last on offer in the Vieira Group draft. Bred on a 3fx4m cross of Eight Carat, this Commands filly, Lot 554, is out of Invincible Girl (Lonhro). A three-quarter sister to the dual Gr.3 winner Friday Creek, she hails from the family of Macau Horse of the Year Golden Star. “She has thrown more to Lonhro and she has plenty of scope.”
