WHILE it is a small draft from Corumbene Stud at Easter 2015, it is a select one, with the stud’s three yearlings chosen for their class, presence and style. Raised in lush surroundings at Corumbene, they hail from the same paddocks as outstanding gallopers Overreach, Sebring, True Jewels (all Gr.1 winning two year-olds) and Heart Ruler.

Kicking off Corumbene’s Easter sale is Lot 351, a handsome colt from the penultimate crop of wonderful Danehill son Commands who died in July 2014, from proven producer Dame Cath (NZ) (Zabeel). With his 70.5% winners-to-runners strike rate Commands has always been a reliable stallion and he has fared well with Zabeel mares, the cross producing six stakes winners including the Gr.1 gallopers Purple and Commanding Jewel.

Zabeel is an outstanding broodmare sire by any measure, his daughters producing 134 stakes winners including the multiple Gr.1 winner Dundeel, Darci Brahma, Ocean Park, Silent Achiever, Atlantic Jewel, Samantha Miss, Faint Perfume, Sarrera and Purple. This colt is out of talented runner Dame Cath, a six-time winner from 1200m-2000m, who enjoyed black type success winning the Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes-LR. Her record as a broodmare is hard to fault with five of her six foals to race being winners including the Gr.1 placed Naturalism Stakes-Gr.3 winner Red Lord, who was also successful at Listed level on two occasions.

Also dam of the multiple city winner Flying Home, Dame Cath has fared well with Danehill line stallions, Red Lord being by Redoute’s Choice and Flying Home by Flying Spur. It’s worth noting too that Commands is a grandson of star broodmare Eight Carat (GB), who crossed to well with Zabeel (producing Octagonal and Mouawad) and his sire Sir Tristram (IRE) (Kaapstad).

A half-sister to the dam of dual Listed winner Heureka, Dame Cath hails from a very good Australasian family as her fourth dam is the prolific matriarch Dulcie, dam of the Gr.1 winners Balmerino, Fulmen and Gay Filou and second dam of one of the superstars of the Australian turf in Surround, the only three year-old filly to win a W.S Cox Plate-Gr.1. “He is a nice athletic colt with a great pedigree,” Corumbene’s Toby Frazer said. “He is a good mix of the qualities of both Commands and Zabeel.”

The first crop progeny of Golden Slipper Stakes-Gr.1 winner Sepoy (Elusive Quality (USA)-Watchful by Danehill (USA)) have been in hot demand at the 2015 sales and they are sure to be keenly sought at Easter. Bred on a 3fx3m cross of Danehill, Lot 373 boasts duplications of the excellent mares Natalma, Somethingroyal and Flower Bowl, and her dam Donnica is by another Slipper hero in Flying Spur whose daughters are performing exceptionally well at stud, producing 54 stakes winners.

Already the dam of two winners, Donnica is a sister to the stakes placed Roedean, dam of the Gr.3 placed multiple city winner Hoylonny. Roedean is best remembered as crossing the line first in a Blue Diamond Stakes-Gr.1 only to lose it following a positive swab to lignocaine. Donnica and Roedean’s dam Queen Kathleen (At Talaq) produced seven other winners and her dam, the city winner Residential Status, also boasts an excellent strike rate with five of her six foals to race being winners including the Eclipse Stakes-Gr.3 and Werribee Cup-LR winner Prime Address.

Further back this is also the family of the stakes winners Demus, Innocent Affair, Fondness, Bay Regent, Status Symbol, Innocent Gamble and Viking Legend. “She is a nice filly with an excellent pedigree and she is a lovely mover. She looks like a natural two year-old type.”

Hailing from a well established Corumbene family, Lot 552 is a daughter of one of Redoute’s Choice’s finest sons in the Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1 winner Snitzel (sire of 28 stakes winners with an excellent 67.9% winners-to-runners strike rate) and boasts interesting and proven pedigree patterns.

Carrying three strains of Lunchtime (as does Snitzel’s recent Gr.3 winner Wandjina) and two each of Storm Bird (as does Snitzel’s Gr.2 winner Time For War), Nijinsky II (as does Snitzel’s W.S Cox Plate-Gr.1 winner Shamus Award) and Biscay (five of Snitzel’s stakes winners are line-bred to him, including the Gr.1 sprinter Snitzerland), she is also line-bred to the influential mares Natalma and Grey Flight and is a descendant of the acclaimed matriarch Pretty Polly.

Her young dam Icedginger is by Tale of the Cat (USA) (Storm Cat) who is already making a name for himself in the US as a broodmare sire with 30 stakes winners including the multiple Gr.1 winner It’s Tricky and Gr.1 winners Dortmund and Declassify. Also his daughters are also starting to perform well in the southern hemisphere, leaving nine stakes winners including Gr.2 winner Adrift.

This filly is Icedginger’s second foal and her first, Theorize, also by Snitzel, has shown good promise at the trials. Again served by Snitzel last spring, Icedginger was twice city placed at two and at just her second start was placed in the rich Wyong Magic Millions Two Year-Old Slipper.

A half-sister to the multiple city winner Hadronica (dam of a Starspangledbanner weanling), Icedginger is out of a half-sister to the Corumbene-bred Blue Diamond Stakes- Gr.1 winner True Jewels (dam of the Listed winner Villain) and the dual Gr.2 winner Wager. Juvenile stakes winner Noesis also hails from this family, which descends from the Black Opal Stakes-Gr.2 winner Marks Gain (Biscay), this filly’s fourth dam. “She is a typical Snitzel and she should run like most of them do. And she has a great temperament, she is an easy filly to do anything with,” Toby Frazer added.
