EDINGLASSIE Stud is nestled on the banks of the Hunter River near Muswellbrook and is steeped in Australian pioneering heritage. The property was the initial settlement for the White family when they came to the Hunter Valley more than 150 years ago, before later being purchased by the Oatley family, famous their yachting, equestrian and thoroughbred pursuits and of course for starting Rosemount Wines and as owners of Hamilton Island and Robert Oatley Wines.

Today Edinglassie is a successful thoroughbred broodmare farm comprising 202ha (500 acres) of fertile, irrigated pastures with both undulating hills for growing strong yearlings, and gentle flats for mares and foals. Mares and young stock are well catered for with clean, healthy pastures and spacious, safe grazing. Edinglassie Stud has a proud recent history, having bred or sold exciting Gr.1 winners such as Shooting to Win, Bentley Biscuit, Nechita, God’s Own, Wonderful World, Nadeem, Sharscay and Miss Margaret, to name but a few nurtured there.

Shooting to Win and Deep Field are brothers by Northern Meteor out of Edinglassie’s star resident broodmare Listen Here, a daughter of champion American sire Elusive Quality (USA). Shooting to Win was an impressive winner of the 2014 Caulfield Guineas- Gr.1 and Deep Field won his first five starts including the 2014 Salinger Stakes-Gr.2 in the spring before being placed third behind Lankan Rupee when first-up in the Lightning Stakes-Gr.1 in late February. Both are exciting future stallion prospects and are aiming for further Group success this autumn.

Listen Here and her two sons have most certainly helped fly the flag for Edinglassie in the past 12 months, however success does not just rest with that trio. Other recent graduates from Edinglassie include the stakes placed Better Land (Shamardal (USA)-Amelia’s Dream by Redoute’s Choice), Gr.2 winner Ninth Legion, the Chris Waller-trained Mamwaazel, who recently won the Belle of the Turf Stakes-Gr.3 at Gosford, and Sebring Sun, an exciting son of Sebring with Golden Slipper aspirations.

Edinglassie is taking an exciting draft of well bred yearlings to the 2015 Australian Easter Yearling Sale in April. The stud will offer seven colts and five fillies by leading sires including More Than Ready, Commands, Snitzel, Northern Meteor, Exceed and Excel, Dansili, Medaglia d’Oro and Charge Forward, as well as youngsters by classic winner Authorised, Gr.1 star All American and first crop Fastnet Rock Gr.1 winner Foxwedge.

Edinglassie’s Mick Talty described the draft as “a really nice group of horses”. Mick is excited by the quality of these youngsters and says there should be something in their draft for most buyers. While Mick was keen to point out “they are all nice horses,” he singled out a few for special mention starting with Lot 169, a Commands colt out of Octagonal mare Sevillano. This colt is a half-brother to talented stakes winners Scream Machine (Excites) and Parrawi (Mossman) and is from the family of Gr.1 winners Miss Margaret and Dreamaway.

Lot 184 is a “well put together” Charge Forward colt out of the stakeswinning Anabaa mare Silently. This colt’s dam is a half-sister to multiple Gr.1-winning Criterion and Gr.2 winner Varenna Miss, with second dam being Gr.3 winner Mica’s Pride. There is sure to be a buzz of excitement when Lot 279 strides into the sale ring at Newmarket as this brown colt is a half-brother to Better Land. He’s by champion sire More Than Ready and is out of Sliver Slipper-Gr.2 winner Amelia’s Dream and bred on the wonderful More Than Ready/Danehill cross which has proved so effective in Australia. Second dam Shalt Not (St Covet) won the Listed Doomben Slipper and placed in a Magic Millions Two Year-Old Classic-RL and left eight winners, while third dam Outremer (IRE) (Cure The Blues), was stakes placed in France and is second dam of Gr.1 winner Grand Zulu.

Lot 318 is a very well built Snitzel filly Mick believes “will attract a lot of interest”. She’s out of classy Marju (IRE) mare Burning Sands, a winner of the Sweet Embrace Stakes-Gr.3 and is from the family of Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 placed Skoozi Please. Burning Sands is a half-sister to Malaysian stakes winner Jeram New Village (nine wins) and four other winners.

A half-sister to triple Gr.1 winner Yosei is catalogued as Lot 414 and is also expected to be popular with buyers who remember her tough-as-teak sibling whose wins included the MRC 1000 Guineas, AJC Sires’ Produce and Tattersall’s Tiara at the elite level. This filly is by great winner-getter Commands and is out of Fuji Kiseki (JPN) mare Fuji Fairy, who has had four foals to race for three winners and is yet another from the wonderful Mumtaz Mahal family, this branch responsible for classic stars Alamshar (Irish Derby) and Alandi (Irish St Leger) and champion NZ sire Nassipour (USA) (Blushing Groom). Commands too is a Mumtal Mahal descendant, his branch coming to Australasia via his second dam Eight Carat (GB).

Lot 486 is another nice colt singled out by Mick. He is from the first crop of William Reid-Gr.1 winner Foxwedge and is out of a winning Montjeu mare Val de Loire (NZ), a three-quarter sister to Gr.3 runner-up Angelica Hall, both from Listed winner Greta Hall (Kaapstad). This is the family of Gr.1 winner Golden Sword and Gr.3 winner Madam Valeta, dam of Gr.2 sprinter Falkirk and of Gr.2 winner Mulan Princess, dam of Gr.1 winner Royal Descent.

Lot 605 is a lovely filly by international sire success Medaglia d’Oro from winning Spectrum (IRE) mare Ripe Plum, who has had four to race for three winners including the promising Savoureux (Nadeem), winner of the 2014 Mode Plate-LR. Ripe Plum is a half-sister to Gr.3 winner Yvonne and this is the family of champion Australasian stayer Lord Reims and numerous big race stars including Bellota, Rocket Racer, Starzaan and Miss Margaret.

Mick and his team at Edinglassie are looking forward to taking this draft to the Easter sales in April and in the meantime will be cheering on Shooting to Win, Deep Field, Ninth Legion, Sebring Sun, Savoureux, Scream Machine and any others they have bred or sold who are racing in Melbourne and Sydney during the rich autumn carnivals.
