Holbrook Thoroughbreds

THE Harris family has been raising good horses for generations and Julie Harris, the latest in a long line of experienced thoroughbred breeders, is carrying on the good work at her lovely property in the epicentre of the breeding industry in the Hunter Valley. Holbrook Thoroughbreds is a family owned boutique broodmare and agistment farm in prime thoroughbred country about 15 kilometres east of Scone on the Pages River.

Julie Harris and parents Alan and Madge started Holbrook Thoroughbreds at the Scone property in 1998 following a long involvement in the Harris family’s Holbrook Stud in the Widden Valley, which had been breeding thoroughbreds very successfully for more than 150 years. We caught up with Julie Harris to talk to her about the 2015 Australian Easter Yearling Sale draft from Holbrook Thoroughbreds.

Q: How long have you been selling at the Inglis Easter Sale?

A: “This is our 10th year selling at Inglis Easter and with eight nice yearlings it is the largest draft we’ve taken there.”

Q: Why do you like selling at Easter?

A: “The Easter sale caters for buyers and sellers at all levels. There is a very strong and diverse buying bench, so if you have a particularly nice yearling, the sky is the limit.”

Q: What are some of your recent selling highlights at Inglis?

A: “In 2012 we sold a Lonhro filly out of Gr.2 winner Patpong (Royal Academy) for $510,000, making her the most expensive yearling filly by her sire sold that year. In 2013 we sold a Snitzel colt out of Jubilee Kate (Distinctly North) for $300,000 and this year we’re offering the sister to him as Lot 462. Snitzem, winner of four races and nearly $200,000, is a brother to both yearlings. At last year’s Easter sale we sold a New Approach colt out of Gr.3-winning Danehill mare Clothilde for $400,000. We’re offering the brother to him at Easter.

Q: Can you tell me about some of the racetrack successes for horses sold by Holbrook?

A: “I mentioned Snitzem, a winner of four races, three at Moonee Valley. He was also placed at Gr.2 and Gr.3 level.

Hot Danish was a wonderful race mare for Les Bridge and her owners. She won two Gr.1 races and 11 stakes races all told, and from 31 career starts over six seasons she won 16 times and ran a place on a further nine occasions to earn $2.3m. More recently we have had Binky Toy win two in Perth, making it five starts for two wins and two seconds in his short career in 2015. His last run was a 4th in the Listed WATC Ascot One Thousand Guineas.

Also we recently had the promising Voilier run second in the Silver Slipper Stakes-Gr.2, a valuable lead up race to the Golden Slipper. Star West Australian mares Elite Belle and Real Love were raised on our farm and we sold Divine Ten who is a stakes winner in Hong Kong and a winner of more than $600,000. We are offering a half-brother to him by Congrats (Lot 499) for Easter.”

Q: Can you provide an overview of your 2015 draft?

A: “We have a lovely, even draft of nice horses with five colts and three fillies. Five are by leading sires Snitzel, Testa Rossa, Choisir, New Approach and Congrats, we have a filly by a leading first season sire Hinchinbrook, and two yearlings by popular freshmen sires Smart Missile and Helmet.

“We start with Lot 5, a colt by Smart Missile from city-placed Kraal (Viscount). This is her first live foal and she is a half-sister to three stakes performers including Sabie. With the Smart Missiles selling very well this year already and being purchased by many of Australia’s leading trainers and owners, this colt whose third dam is Gr.3 winner Lusso, is sure to be popular. Lot 440 is a filly by one of the leading first season sires in Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock) and from noted producer Hot ‘n’ Breezy (Zephyr Zip). This yearling is a half-sister to the tough mare Hot Danish, multiple Gr.1 winner of the All-Aged Stakes-Gr.1 and Doomben 10,000-Gr.1 and more than $2.33m in prizemoney. Holbrook sold Hot Danish in 2005 for just $32,000.

“Lot 462 is a sister to Snitzem and the Snitzel colt who sold for $300,000 in 2013, all from Jubilee Kate (Distinctly North). The dam has had two to race for two winners, the other being city winner and Gr.3 fourth Academy Magic. This filly is from a family of stakes winners such as the mother-daughter pair of Rouquin and Patpong, Gold Coast Guineas-Gr.3 winner Chakvetadze and Cheval Place. Lot 496 is a Testa Rossa colt from Zacushla, a multiple winner and stakes placed daughter of champion sire Zabeel. The mare has had an impressive six to race for six winners and is from a family rich in black type including Master McGinty and Starstruck.

“Congrats (A.P. Indy) has already sired more than 340 winners (17SW) in the US, his first Australian runners are two and his yearlings have been very popular at the sales. Our Congrats colt (Lot 499) is from stakes placed Zakynthos Star (Dehere) who won seven races. She’s had four to race for four winners including the Hong Kong Gr.3 winner Divine Ten. International sprint champion Choisir has been a wonderful sire and we have a lovely filly (Lot 520) by him. She is out of the Gr.3 placed Bianconi (USA) mare But I’m Serious who won six races, twice at two. She’s had two to race and both are multiple winners, while second dam All Angels is a stakes winner of nine races. This is the family of Golden Slipper winner Dark Eclipse, fifth dam of this filly.

“Lot 532 is a brother to the New Approach-Clothilde (Danehill (USA)) colt who sold for $400,000 at the 2014 Inglis Easter Sale. Clothilde, a Gr.3 winner and daughter of Silver Shadow Stakes-Gr.2 winner Seika (Canny Lad), has done a good job, with four winners from four to race including the city winner Chart (Viscount), who has won seven races. Lot 539 is by freshman sire Helmet, winner of the Caulfield Guineas-Gr.1 and two other Gr.1 races and a son of Exceed and Excel.

This colt is out of Democrat (Octagonal), a multiple winner who is from the family of stakes winners including Denman, Safeguard, Rio Osa and Soul. This yearling’s second and third dams are by champions Canny Lad and Vain, and second dam Dixiegem is a sister to Gr.1 winner Preserve.”
