RIVERSDALE Farm, in the heart of thoroughbred country at Scone, is a family run broodmare farm established by Peter and Alison Hodges and now run by their son Nick. Riversdale has been rearing and breeding winners for more than 30 years and recent stars to come off the Hunter Valley farm include Black Jag, a winner of more than $450,000 and the very talented My Destiny who won the Lough Neagh Stakes–LR and earned $345,000.

The in-form pair of two year-olds, Miss Idyllic and Flemington winner Claudia Jean, who are both targeting the leading two year-old races this autumn, are also graduates and are trained by David Hayes and Tom Dabernig. Add to that list, Kapset, a lightly raced three year-old Reset gelding who was stakes placed in the 2014 Melbourne Spring carnival, and it’s clear to see Riversdale is a farm riding on success.

The New Year heralded in more joy for the farm with the successful sale of a Sepoy colt for $460,000 to David Raphael. That colt is out of Made of Gold (USA) mare Academy Idol, making him a half-brother to exciting Exceed and Excel juvenile Miss Idyllic. Riversdale managing owner Nick Hodges is excited by the potential being shown by Miss Idyllic and is looking forward to rearing Academy Idol’s latest foal, a 2014 filly by deceased international sire success Street Cry (IRE).

Current in-form 2YO Miss Idyllic is a graduate of Riversdale farm Riversdale has a solid draft entered for the 2015 Australian Easter Yearling Sale (April 7-9) with six strong colts and two attractive fillies to be offered. Represented by leading sires Sebring, Redoute’s Choice and Exceed and Excel as well as exciting freshman sires So You Think and Smart Missile, the Riversdale entries are sure to attract their share of attention. Nick is very pleased with each of the eight yearlings the stud is offering and was only too happy to offer his thoughts ahead of the sale.

Lot 602 by Darley’s freshman Poet’s Voice (by Dubawi) from Remotely by Manton, is a very well related colt. He’s by a Gr.1 winner, is out of a half-sister to the dual Gr.1 winner and sire Arena, and his second dam Lee’s Bid is also a Gr.1 winner. He’s a very nice type too, with Nick adding, “He’s an average size but he walks the house down”!

Another well bred colt in the Riversdale draft is Lot 435. Bred by Robrick Lodge, a good client of the Hodges family, this son of champion So You Think is from a strong female line. He is the second foal of the Dehere mare Heretis, whose first foal is a winner. Heretis is a half-sister to Gr.1 winner La Baraka and Gr.2 winner Tsuimai, with the champion and five-time Gr.1 winner Triscay (Marscay) this colt’s second dam. “He’s a high quality horse, very correct and very much like So You Think,” said Nick.

A colt by Exceed and Excel out of multiple winner Shiroka (Viscount) is catalogued as Lot 179. Nick says this fellow is “a lovely strong, forward type, very much like his father”. Talented juvenile Pursuits is from this family, whose members also include Group winners Detours and Aichi. Lot 537 is a Sebring colt who has relished the time he’s been given ahead of the Easter sale. “He’s a lovely horse with plenty of scope and has been given the time and really developed,” said Nick. He’s the first foal of multiple winner Dandy Warhols (Distant Music) and is from the family of stakes performers Graceful Anna, Prince Rubiton, Force Apollo and News Alert. Lot 157 is a Bernadini colt from winning Danehill mare Satyric who has had five to race for five winners, two of those stakes winners. His second dam is also the great Triscay (Marscay-Tristram Lady by Sir Tristram), winner of 15 races and $1.9m.

Lot 403 is a Redoute’s Choice colt with plenty of scope and an interesting pedigree. He’s the first foal of Shamardal (USA) mare Femina Fashion, whose six wins included the Gold Coast Bracelet-LR and who was runner-up in the Doomben Roses-Gr.3. This is the family of Happy Archer, Lolita Star and Berezny. A half-sister to the promising Furbish, Lot 531 is a neat Sebring filly from Cleanup by Dehere. This is the family of stakes performers She’s Clean, Champion Japanese Sprinter-Miler Kinshasa No Kiseki and Australian Oaks-Gr.1 winner Absolutely. Rounding out Riversdale’s draft is Lot 563, a strong filly from the first crop of speed star Smart Missile from Leonina (Snippets), who has had five to race, all winners, including the Macau Listed winner Speedy Leo (Nadeem).

As the autumn carnival takes place and Nick and his team put the finishing touches on their Easter yearlings, Riversdale will be watching on proudly as the likes of Miss Idyllic, Claudia Jean and other horses reared and sold by the farm, take their place in some of the better races across the country.
