“A CONSPICUOUS effort to buy high class stakes performing mares who tick the boxes with conformation and pedigree”, has resulted in a classy Easter draft for Segenhoe Stud. Described by stud manager Peter O’Brien as “a stunningly beautiful bunch of yearlings” the draft is the second for Segenhoe since being taken over by the Maloney family in 2010.

“We had a terrific sale with a small group last year when our Street Cry filly out of the Lonhro mare Munhro was the sale topping female at $1.05 million, and I am confident that success will be eclipsed this year.” The stud has already received plenty of good feedback on the youngsters from visitors such as Gai Waterhouse, and O’Brien has derived plenty of satisfaction in seeing the stud’s mating plans come to fruition.

“We ideally like to mate our mares with proven stallions,” he said, noting that the majority of the Easter yearlings are by such sires. “It is great to see the subsequent quality of our foals.”

The draft kicks off with Lot 42, a bay colt by High Chaparral (IRE) from brilliant juvenile Merlene (Danehill). This colt’s Golden Slipper-winning dam has produced of six winners, including South African Gr.2 winner Merlene de Lago (dam of sadly missed Burnstone) and the dam of VRC Oaks-Gr.1 winner Dear Demi. Inheriting the best of his sire and dam, he has “the lovely long loose action of his sire” and the “size, scope and terrific strength” of his dam.

Next up is Lot 48, a bay colt by Fastnet Rock from multiple Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 placed Mimi Lebrock (Show A Heart). Like his sire’s Gr.1 winners Sea Siren and Your Song, this colt is line-bred to the great Nijinsky. His dam won five races and more than $1.1m and her first foal is a winner this season. “He’s more of a three year-old type, a quality colt who has continued to improve. Very much a progressive type,” O’Brien said.

Lot 71 is a bay filly by champion sire Redoute’s Choice from NZ Derby-Gr.1 fourth My Chicharita (Towkay). This filly is the first foal of a Gr.2-winning grandaughter of Gr.3 mare Swiftsynd, dam of Le Zagaletta (14 wins and $1.3m). She boasts Bletchingly and Sir Ivor duplications. “A beautifully balanced quality filly with a great action.” She will be followed by Lot 117, a bay filly by More Than Ready (USA) from the $3.4m earner and Champion Three Year-Old Filly Private Steer (Danehill Dancer). The dam won three at Gr.1 level and has produced three winners including Second Bullet and Major Major and is a half-sister to dual Gr.1 winner and $1.6m earner All Silent. “Private Steer’s three year-old Abbey Road looks a Queensland Oaks type. This filly has a lot of quality.”

Segenhoe is also offering the next through the ring and Lot 118 is a chestnut filly by first crop sire Foxwedge from noted producer Procrastinate (Jade Hunter). This filly’s dual Gr.3-winning dam has been represented by 10 winners including South African star Laisserfaire and local stakes winners A Time For Julia, Time Thief, Foreplay and Personify, as well as promising three year-old Armada (by Fastnet Rock, sire of Foxwedge).

“Her dam is one of the best mares in the country and this filly is beautiful. Obviously she has massive residual value,” O’Brien said, noting that “Procrastinate has three of her progeny racing in stakes races this carnival, all horses she produced after she was 18 years-old!”

Lot 124 is a bay filly by Exceed and Excel from Radharcnafarraige (Distorted Humor) and is the first foal of an imported dual Gr.3 winner whose dam Extraterrestial produced stakes winners Exhaust Note and Alienated. Third dam Victorian Queen was a champion in Canada and produced three Gr.1 winners. This is the family of Teofilo. “She is a typical Exceed and Excel, all quality, short coupled with huge hindquarters and hip.”

Lot 178 is a bay or brown filly by Medaglia d’Oro from US Gr.2 winner Sherine (Precise End). This is the family of big race winner Bodemeister and the second and third dams are by Red Ransom and Nijinsky. “She’s as good a Medaglia d’Oro filly as I have seen, very much a classic type, all quality and balance.”

Another first crop sire is represented by Lot 205, a chestnut colt by Helmet from Star On High (Fusaichi Pegasus). This yearling hails from one of the world’s great families, as he is a descendant of Best In Show (as is Redoute’s Choice). His dam is an imported half-sister to the European Champion 3YO Filly Peeping Fawn (Danehill) and Gr.1 miler Thewayyouare; the dam’s Street Cry son, now named Taaj, fetched $1.5m last year.

“I have been very impressed with Helmet’s types and this colt is no exception,” O’Brien said. “He’s a lovely big strong colt with a terrific attitude.”

Lot 208, a bay filly by More Than Ready from Stellar Vinia (Redoute’s Choice), is the first foal of a half-sister to Gr.1 winner Calveen (10 wins), Group winners Fireworks and Kosi Bay and Listed winner Striker. Second dam is a half-sister to South Australian Derby-Gr.1 winner English Wonder, dam of Dr Grace. “This is a tall filly with a terrific action and plenty of scope, she looks a natural racehorse.”

Lot 217, a bay filly by Fastnet Rock from stakes winner Swiss Rose (Thorn Park), is bred on a 3fx3f cross of Royal Academy and is the first living foal of a Listed winner from the family of Fast ‘N’ Famous, Catnipped, Full At Last, Bleeveka, Consular, Sister Havana and Miss Prospect. “I have a huge opinion of Thorn Park as an emerging broodmare sire and this girl is stunning, very precocious; she looks like an early-comer.”

Another filly follows and Lot 229 is a bay or brown by Foxwedge from tough campaigner The Party Stand (Thorn Park). Also line-bred to Royal Academy, she is the second foal of a Gr.1 winner and was purchased as a weanling for $350,000. “The best Foxwedge I’ve seen, a stunning filly who looks like a colt in strength. A great advertisement for her sire.”

Lot 292 is sure to have plenty of admirers, as he’s a grey colt by champion sire Fastnet Rock from multiple Group winner and Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1 runner-up Avenue (Anabaa). This fellow has inherited the grey coat of his champion third dam Emancipation and is the second foal of a multiple Gr.3-winning sister to dual Gr.1 winner Virage de Fortune.

“Everyone will remember how brilliantly fast his dam was and I think those sort of mares are the best suited to Fastnet Rock,” said O’Brien who described the colt as one of the best on the farm, noting he has “an unbelievable action”.

Lot 303 is a bay colt by Husson (ARG) from the Gr.1 winner Bel Mer (Bel Esprit) and is bred on a 5mx4m cross of Nijinsky II. Stakeswinning second dam Drop Anchor (At Talaq) is dam of Singapore Gr.3 winner King Arok and third dam Marine Park (Sir Dapper) is also a stakes winner. “A loose walking, two year-old-type with huge shoulders, hips and gaskin. I’d be very surprised if he didn’t come to hand early.” Lot 317, a bay filly by Redoute’s Choice from Buckleupbuttercup (USA) (Najran), is the first foal of an imported dual Group winner from strong US family of Lamplight, Al’s Deputy, Light Tactic, Anchor, Summers Peace and Alanza. “As good a first foal as you’d see, a long, tall, filly with lots of scope who has been greatly admired by all.”

Another highly regarded first season sire is responsible for Lot 321, as this bay colt is by Golden Slipper hero Sepoy from noted producer Calvinia (Varick). He is a half-brother to recent juvenile stakes winner Fireworks, the Gr.1 winner Calveen and two other stakes winners and this is the same family as Lot 208. “By the sire of the moment and a half-brother to a recent stakes winner, he is all quality. A horse with a terrific head and particularly good balance.”

Lot 323, a bay filly by Fastnet Rock from Candlelight (USA) (Kingmambo), is bred on the same Fastnet Rock/Kingmambo cross as Gr.1 winner Super Cool and is out of an imported half-sister to dual Gr.1 winner and sire Grand Slam. “She reminds me so much of Atlantic Jewel as a yearling, a filly of great presence; big, tall and lots of scope, with a great action.” Lot 362, a bay filly by Street Cry (IRE) from Deer Valley (Lonhro), is the first foal of a Gr.3 winner from the family of champion Kingston Town, rising star Our Boy Malachi and outstanding UK galloper Australia. “She has looked great lungeing as she is a strong filly with a lovely long loose action.”

The final yearling in this draft is Lot 422, a bay colt by Commands from five-time winner Girl Hussler (Hussonet). This colt’s dam is a Listed winner and Group placed grandaughter of stakes winner Clever Zoe and from family of Dual Hemisphere, Hancock Park, Playful Fingers, Ritzy Lady and Our Quartet. “This is a colt with a terrific temperament and you’d never think he was a first foal. He has plenty of size and strength and an especially good action. Virtual community naked ladies lovers welcomes you if you wish to meet women I suggest you free bongo chat .
