Souther Cross Breeders

THE quality of yearling sale drafts presented by Southern Cross Breeders is well known and Easter 2015 is no exception with a quality selection of well related youngsters by a good mix of proven and up-and-coming stallions. The Fastnet Rock connection is a strong one here with lovely youngsters by his first crop sons Foxwedge and Smart Missile, while another first crop star in So You Think (NZ) is also represented.

Kicking off the Southern Cross Easter sale draft is Lot 44, a Foxwedge half-brother to the Concorde Stakes-Gr.3 winner Wouldnt It Be Nice. Out of the imported Listed winner Mia Cat Dancer (USA) (Tactical Cat), he is a grandson of the stakes placed Master Print, also dam of the Listed winner Skip The Print and from the family of US stakes winners Farmonthefreeway, Scarlet Rage, Wardrobe Test and Matchless Orinda.

“He is an outstanding colt,” said Senga Bissett of Southern Cross, “big, strong and full of quality. He is a good walker with a great temperament. Both of the mare’s two to race have come out as early two year-olds and this colt is more forward than they were.”

Also by Foxwedge is Lot 186, a daughter of the imported Silver Sparks (USA) (Mt Livermore), a half-sister to the dam of the 2014 US Champion Older Female Close Hatches, a five times Gr.1 winner. Boasting a duplication of the excellent mare Flaming Page, she has the Gr.3 winner Monroe as her third dam and the incomparable Best In Show as her fourth dam.

“Being from such a great family we are confident that she will prove popular with international buyers,” Bissett noted. “She is an absolutely gorgeous filly. Silver Spark’s first foal Majaska has shown lots of ability and looks ready to go right on.”

Fellow Fastnet Rock stallion Smart Missile has a nice group of Easter yearlings including Lot 287, the first foal of city winner Apennine (Dubai Destination), daughter of Gr.2-winning juvenile Apollo Wonder and from the family of Gr.1 gallopers Paint, Akhenaton and Mr Bureaucrat. “Smart Missile is putting a lot of size and scope into his foals and this filly is a very strong first foal. She is a no-nonsense, very straight forward filly.”

Another Smart Missile from a great family is Lot 457, a colt out of Jannah (Carnegie) whose Gr.3-winning half-sister Crowned Glory (a Golden Slipper runner-up) is dam of the exciting Gr.1-winning three year-old Hallowed Crown and the Gr.3 galloper Needs Further. His third dam is the great Lady Giselle (FR) (Nureyev), dam of Zabeel and Baryshnikov. “He is an outstanding individual, big and strong and a very good mover. We cannot fault him.”

Another young stallion whose progeny are bound to be keenly sought after is dual Cox Plate winner and European star So You Think (NZ), sire of Lot 345, a colt out of the triple stakes winner Crevette (Danehill) whose three to race have all been winners including the Tattersall’s Tiara-Gr.1 winner Cosmic Endeavour and the dual city winner Gamba. Crevette’s dam is the wonderful Twiglet (Edward Manifold Stakes-Gr.2) who earned the title of Broodmare of the Year thanks to the exploits of her two wonderful sons Easy Rocking and Fairy King Prawn.

Aged 27 and retired four years ago, Twiglet was well represented by Fairy King Prawn, one of the best to race in Hong Kong, taking his Gr.1 winning form to Japan where he won the prestigious Yasuda Kinen. Easy Rocking was an outstanding sprinter too, seen at his best winning the 2000 Salinger Stakes-Gr.1. “This colt is a stunner, the image of his sire. He has a magnificent action and a wonderful temperament, he is just a lovely horse.”

Lot 404 is another So You Think, a grey half-sister to four winners including the South African Group winners Eight Street and Ottimo and the dam of the NZ Listed winner Caduceus. Her dam Figure of Eight (Octagonal) is a half-sister to the dual Group-winning Japanese galloper Meisho Beluga and from the family of one of the greats of the European turf in Dancing Brave. “She has developed amazingly through her preparation and she will mature into a lovely classic type as you’d expect,” Senga said.

Northern Meteor’s final crop will also be in demand including Lot 364, the first foal for the three times winner Delaluna (Strategic), a sister to the Gr.1-winning sprinter Mistegic and the Listed winner Rightson. “She is the image of her sire, you can certainly pick her as a Northern Meteor. She has a massive hindquarter and is a good size for a first foal. She has a lovely temperament and she should prove very popular.”

There are high expectations for the progeny of champion sprinter Dream Ahead (USA) and he is represented in the Southern Cross Easter draft by Lot 405, a well related filly from the same family as Lot 345, that of Fairy King Prawn. With a pedigree featuring the brothers Sadler’s Wells and Fairy King, this youngster is out of the multiple winner Filipa (Encosta de Lago), a three-quarter sister to Cosmic Endeavour.

“She is a slightly smaller filly but what she lacks in size she makes up with strength, quality and action. She is a very good walker and very strong behind,” Bissett said of a filly she thinks will mature into a nice broodmare prospect later on.

Hinchinbrook’s young runners are shaping very nicely and a filly with an interesting pedigree is his daughter, Lot 471. A half-sister to the metropolitan winner Dupe ‘em, this yearling is bred on a 3fx3m cross of speed influence Snippets. She is out of a half-sister to the Listed winner Burgeis and from the family of Golden Slipper Stakes-Gr.1 winner and successful stallion Stratum. “She is a strong, well grown filly with nice balance and good strength.”
