MEMBERS of the flourishing Redoute’s Choice sire line make up the majority of Torryburn Stud’s 2015 Easter draft, including a son and daughter of this champion stallion. There are also several youngsters by his Oakleigh Plate winner Snitzel, who finished runner-up to Redoute’s Choice on the Champion Sire standings in 2013-14.

Torryburn, on the banks of the Allyn River near Gresford, has a great history for producing winners, star sprinter Terravista was born and raised there. He goes home there for his breaks away from the track, and why wouldn’t he, for this lightning fast Gr 1 winning son of Captain Rio and wonder mare Parfore (Gold Brose) is part-owned by none other than Torryburn manager Reggie Blundell. Owner John Cornish and his family have proved wonderful custodians of the historic property, which was once the home of poet Dorothea Mackellar, improving the facilities and continually upgrading the broodmare band since buying in 2002.

The stud’s first by Redoute’s Choice, quite early on the first day of the sale, is Lot 32. This colt is from talented race mare Lucky Diva (Perugino), who won 11 races to 1200m and more than $569,000. His Gr.3-winning dam’s first three foals are all winners and his second dam is dual stakes winner and highly successful broodmare Lucky Witch, dam of the Gr.3 winner Spirit of Westbury and the Listed winners Gina Lollawitcha (also by Perugino) and Duke of Westbury. This colt’s third dam, Better Be Lucky, is a three-quarter-sister to champion racehorse and stallion Century. Bred on a 3mx3m cross of Danzig, he also boasts duplications of the excellent mares Natalma and Romanella (dam of the legendary Ribot).

“This colt has plenty of scope and good bone under him,” Torryburn Stud manager Reggie Blundell said. “He has a great loose walk for a big horse and is very light on his feet. Time and patience will be this colt’s best friend.”

A filly from stakes placed Smart Strike mare Suzy Smart (USA) is the second of Torryburn’s duo by Redoute’s Choice, Lot 216 being a grandaughter of triple Gr.1 winner Minstrella, dam of the Group winners Colonel Minstrel and Minidar, as well as the triple Listed winner Unrestrained. This yearling has a 4fx4m cross of His Majesty and is from a prolific black-type family whose members include the Group winners Blofeld, A Little Warm and Mini Sermon. “This filly just oozes class and elegance. She has plenty of scope and is well put together with great bone. She really ticks all the boxes.”

One of the best sire sons of Redoute’s Choice is his Arrowfield barn mate Snitzel, who is doing such a good job at stud, with more than 400 winners to his credit including Cox Plate hero Shamus Award, that his service fee rose to $71,500 last spring. Torryburn has three of his yearlings due to head through the Newmarket ring, beginning with Lot 70. This colt is from the stakes placed, city winner My Amici (Anabaa) and is the second foal of his dam. He is a grandson of stakes winner Mutate (Octagonal), also dam of the Gr.3 placed Costly Commitment. Boasting seven strains of Northern Dancer, this colt hails from a family whose members include Melbourne Cup-Gr.1 winner and sire At Talaq and another imported stayer who enjoyed Australian success, the dual Gr.3 winner Far Lane. “There is a lot of quality in this colt. He has good rein, a great attitude and he is a very well balanced yearling. He’s the type of colt everyone would love to have in their stable,” Reggie said.

Lot 490 is a Snitzel filly from Watch My Lips (Royal Academy), who is a descendant of, and line-bred to, the acclaimed matriarch La Troienne. This filly’s dam has had three to race and all are winners, including the city winner Clinton Affair, also by Snitzel. Her second dam is the Magic Night Stakes-Gr.2 winner Mardi’s Magic, a sister to Surrealist, dam of the multiple Gr.1 winner Racing to Win and the Gr.3-winning stallion Purrealist. She boasts duplications of Bletchingly and Nijinsky II. “The first word that comes into my mind with this filly is attitude. And she is a very neat filly with scope and good bone.”

Lot 534, also by Snitzel, is a bay colt out of the winning Gulch mare Crevice (USA). He is a half-brother to the Gr.3-placed juvenile Aashiq and a three-quarter brother to the Japanese Gr.3 winner Brave Tender. Hailing from a classy international family, he can boast amongst his relations the Gr.1 winners Magic of Life (UK), Joshua Tree (Canada) and Inara (South Africa), as well as the Champion Older Female Miler of Italy Nova Hawk. “This colt in time will furnish into a lovely balanced horse. He has plenty of scope and good leg under him and what impresses me most about him is his big, loose walk.”

A colt (Lot 480) by Golden Rose-Gr.1 winner Denman (Lonhro), is bound to prove popular with his sire faring so well already with stakes winners like Kuro, Law and Pinch River. This fellow is out of the O’Reilly mare Tell Someone, a multiple winner from 1200m-2200m and Queensland Oaks-Gr.1 fourth, and is bred on a 3fx5m cross of speed influence Vain. A three-quarter brother to the talented Why Why, who has been impressive winning his past two at Sha Tin in easy style, he is also a half-brother to the dam of the Phar Lap Stakes winner Traitor-Gr.2.

Hailing from the family of champion filly Slight Chance, the tough Queensland Derby-Gr.1 winner Bramble and recent New Zealand stakes winner Include, he is “a big colt with scope and a great attitude, this to me is a very important attribute to have in a horse,” Reggie said.

Bringing Torryburn’s Easter sale to a close is Lot 589, a bay colt by freshman sire Smart Missile from the Zabeel mare Pixels. Bred on the same Fastnet Rock/ Zabeel cross as the big race winners Atlantic Jewel and Planet Rock, he is a half-brother to the promising three year-old Rib Eye (Choisir) and out of a daughter of the stakes winner Snapshots (Success Express), in turn a daughter of the Gr.1-winning juvenile Hold That Smile (Haulpak). From the family of the triple Gr.1 winner Sea Siren and successful WA stallion Oratorio, he boasts Nijinsky II and Sir Tristram duplications as well as crosses of the outstanding mares Natalma and Rough Shod II (Smart Missile’s fifth dam).

“He is a bit strong colt with a lot of the attributes buyers look for in a yearling. He has a nice pedigree page that matches up with a well put together yearling.
