Over the last 20 years Sri Lankan businessman Muzaffar Yaseen’s Teeley Assets has developed one of Australia’s most successful thoroughbred dynasties.

As everyone in the industry appreciates Mr Yaseen has enjoyed a remarkable run of success in Australian racing and breeding since purchasing Shantha’s Choice for $220,000 as a yearling in 1993.

On retiring from racing Shantha’s Choice was mated with Danehill in her maiden season and she produced Redoute’s Choice.

In the ensuing years Teeley Assets has put together one of the nation’s most impressive bloodstock portfolios with many horses descending from or related to Shantha’s Choice and Redoute’s Choice.

Now Mr Yaseen has decided to sell many of those horses in an unreserved dispersal of mares and a reduction sale of other bloodstock at the Gold Coast Magic Millions complex.

In the lead up to the sale, from May 26 to June 5, Stallions questioned Magic Millions managing director Vin Cox about the offering.

Q.: Securing the Teeley Assets Syndicate dispersal is quite a coup for Magic Millions

A.: It is. think without a doubt it will be the biggest dispersal sale ever held in the southern hemisphere.

Q.: How do you feel about Magic Millions being chosen

A.: Obviously it is a great honor to be entrusted with the Teeley Assets dispersal and reduction sale. Few breeding operations have experienced the success of Teeley Assets. Each year the famous Teeley colours are prominent in the winners stall in feature races in the country so as I said we are honored to be holding such a sale.

Q.: How did this come about

A.: We had a sensational mare sale last year with a 90 per cent clearance and a very strong market right through. On the back of this successful sale we were the obvious choice to conduct the dispersal.

Q.: What are the numbers involved in the sale

A.: There are 51 mares, 31 weanlings, four yearlings and a select group of five race fillies.

Q.: Could you name some of the higher profile mares

A.: There are mares like The Broken Shore, who is a city winning daughter of Shantha’s Choice in foal to Fastnet Rock; there is Ten Carat Rock, who is by Rock of Gibraltar from Shantha’s Choice in foal to Fastnet Rock; there is Estelle Collection, who is in foal to Redoute’s Choice so she is carrying a full brother or sister to Lankan Rupee; another is Monsoon Wedding, who is a sister to Redoute’s Choice and dam of Precious Lorraine, in foal to Pierro and Precious Lorraine is being sold, in foal to Stratum.

Q.: What about race fillies

A.: We will be selling last year’s Blue Diamond Stakes winner Miracles of Life; Taste of Heaven, a winner by Encosta de Lago from Shantha’s Choice, and Drifting Cube, who is by Encosta de Lago from Sliding Cube.

Q.: Can you name feature lots among the weanlings

A.: Mr Yaseen is not selling all the foals that he has bred. He is keeping about 10. Having said that there are two Redoutes Choices, three More Than Readys and two Fastnet Rocks weanlings as well and they are all out of his good mares.

Q.: Do you expect the dispersal will attract buyers from around the world

A.: There is no question about that. Mr Yaseen has never sold fillies from these families he has since buying Shantha’s Choice as a yearling back in 1993 and here he is selling them all in the one go. It is an opportunity to get into that family that there hasn’t been previously.

Q.: What significance does this have for the future of Teeley Assets in the industry

A.: Mr Yaseen is still going to have a number of racehorses not least of them being this year’s Oakleigh Plate and Newmarket Handicap winner Lankan Rupee. He also has this year’s Black Opal Stakes winner Lacky Raquie, who is by Encosta de Lago from Monsoon Wedding. Besides that he is retaining his 10 weanlings and he has his shares in stallions such as Redoute’s Choice, Stratum, Not a Single Doubt, Manhattan Rain and so on which means he is still going to be a significant investor in the industry.

Q.: Is the dispersal helping attract other high profile entries

A.: The catalogue is  mouth watering. We are very much looking forward to putting it out because it will blow everyone away with how strong it is and how deep it is. For instance among the valuable mares we will be selling are the dams of Appearance and of Zoustar.

Q.: Will you be going overseas to promote the sale

A.: I have recently been to Japan and we have put out a Teeley dispersal preview catalogue to whet everyone’s appetite. I will be going to South Africa in April and David Chester will be travelling throughout Asia. We will also, obviously, be contacting European and American buyers as well.

Q.: How do you feel about the thoroughbred market

A.: There is no question that the market is very sound. Horses are making what they are worth and the market is stronger than it was last year, which is a positive and the fundamentals in Australia are outstanding. There is a lot of confidence about the place.

Q.: On a personal note how have you settled in at the Magic Millions

A.: Loving it. There are a lot worse places to live than the Gold Coast and I am very much enjoying my role with Magic Millions. It has been challenging but it is a lot of fun.
