Knocked out by Not a Single Doubt

published: 18 Feb 2015 in Sale previews

AT the 2011 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale Bell River Thoroughbreds sold an athletic son of Not a Single Doubt for $90,000 to bloodstock agent Paul Beamish. That horse now races under the name of Seasons Star in Hong Kong and is the winner of five races and more than $HK3.36m, and he is still racing.

Out of Canny Lad mare Annie’s River, Seasons Star has helped vindicate Bell River’s managing owner Andrew Ferguson’s decision to get right behind Not a Single Doubt as a sire. Andrew has long been a fan of this Arrowfield sire, a son of champion Redoute’s Choice and Singles Bar (Rory’s Jester) who won four and was second twice in just 10 starts, having followed him closely as a racehorse when his wife Georgie’s stepfather, the late Bruce Reid, raced him in partnership with Graeme Rogerson and others. Andrew describes him as a “really good horse who never fulfilled his potential. He was a Gr.1 horse.”

Bell River Thoroughbreds’ affinity with Not a Single Doubt has already brought considerable success to the sales ring for the Fergusons. In 2013 a colt by Not a Single Doubt out of Fleecing, a city-winning daughter of Anabaa, brought $170,000; and in 2015, already Bell River has sold a filly for $200,000 and a colt for $270,000.

So it’s not surprising Andrew has singled out two colts by Not a Single Doubt as highlights of the farm’s draft at the Melbourne Premier. Lot 27 is out of Arthur’s Lass (Unduplicated), a stakes placed and six times winning mare who has had four to race for four winners including Lionize, a brother to this colt, who is a stakes performer in South Africa.

The second of the Not a Single Doubt yearlings for the Bell River draft is Lot 276. This chestnut colt is out of the Marauding mare Indexed who is a threequarter sister to Cloister (Dam of Melito). “If this yearling was a filly, she would not be for sale at any price,” Andrew said. “He is a lovely walking fellow and is a half-brother to stakes winner Flying Alpha (by Flying Spur) who has already produced a stakes winner in Cambasio.” Second dam Zedegal (The Judge) is a sister to star racehorse and sire Zeditave.

Reset is another stallion the Fergusons have enjoyed success with in the past, having bred Module, winner of the 2013 Listed Bagot Handicap; and with Reset currently sitting ninth on the General Sires’ table Andrew suggests he’s a “much underrated sire”. Bell River has two Reset yearlings in its Melbourne Premier draft with the first (Lot 157) a colt out of Fleecing (Anabaa), making him a half-brother to Conroy’s Gap (nine wins), the $170,000 Not A Single Doubt colt the farm sold in 2013. The farm’s second Reset is Lot 249, a filly out of Flying Spur mare Media Storm, a winner of three races. Media Storm is a halfsister to the Group winner and Gr.1 runner-up Gallant Tess. “She is a “big, strong filly who looks like being a real runner,” Andrew said.

Bell River also has fillies by Denman (Lot 93, from Silver Slipper-Gr.2 fourth Coco Kerringle by Exceed and Excel) and Smart Missile (Lot 341, from Go The Knuckle’s half-sister Magic Zefta by Viscount) with the two year-old half-sister to the Denman filly showing good, early ability for father and son trainers Leon and Troy Corstens. However Andrew believes the best colt Bell River is taking to the sales is Lot 390, a strong yearling by Wanted, winner of the Newmarket Handicap-Gr.1 and from More Than A Cracker (More Than Ready). “This is as nice a team of horses we’ve taken to Melbourne and he is the standout, with a real presence and a lovely head,” said Andrew.
