Graduate Eroico is a rising star in HK

published: 18 Feb 2015 in Sale previews

VINERY Stud’s latest yearling consignment to the Inglis Premier Sale coincides with the emergence of Eroico as one of the most promising young gallopers in Hong Kong. Eroico (Starcraft-Collodi by Testa Rossa) is a $60,000 Vinery graduate from Oaklands and he was an eye-catching winner of the London Handicap, which showcased Hong Kong’s rising stars at the International Meeting in December.

Melbourne Premier commences on Sunday, March 1 and the first Vinery yearling to parade is a Testa Rossa-Alma’s Angel (Al Maher) filly (Lot 9). She is a three-quarter sister to Sistine Angel who was one of the leading three year-old fillies of her generation winning the McNeil Stakes-Gr.3 at Caulfield and Edward Manifold Stakes-Gr.2 at Flemington. Resuming as a four year-old, she earned a Gr.1 placing when runner-up to world champion Black Caviar in the Robert Sangster Stakes at Morphettville.

There’s a rich vein of juvenile form throughout the pedigree, which has been developed by WA breeder Warren Gellard. As an autumn two year-old Sistine Angel had earned black type behind Smokin’ Joey in the Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes at Caulfield. The family goes back to flying filly Rancheetah (Rancher) who defeated Caulfield Cup winner Imposera when they were two year-olds. At stud, she foaled Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes winner Land Speed Record.

Vinery’s second Testa Rossa at Oaklands is a colt from English-bred Poppet's Treasure (GB) (Lot 440). The Dansili mare won at Chantilly and was stakes placed at Deauville before making 120,000 guineas ($A193,685) at Tattersalls in November 2011. She is a half-sister to Champion European sprinter Overdose who is currently covering his first German book at Gestut Lindenhof.

Snitzel was the sole stallion with three lots on the Top 10 leader-board at the Gold Coast Magic Millions and Vinery will parade his filly from English bred mare Heart of the Matter (GB) (Rainbow Quest) as Lot 201 at Oaklands. Heart of the Matter is owned by Chris Wright, of Stratford Place Stud in Gloucestershire. He founded Chrysalis Records in the 1980s with rock stars like Spandau Ballet, Blondie, Billy Idol and Pat Benatar. The Gr.1 winners from his international breeding program include Zaidan (Hong Kong Classic), Donativum (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile) and Culture Vulture (French 1000 Guineas).

Champion US sire Congrats (USA) covered 150 mares in his second Australian book and among his leading supporters have been Vinery partners Alan Green and Greg Perry. Green sold a Congrats filly from New Zealand stakes winner Kalamata for $140,000 at the Gold Coast Magic Millions and Perry has entered another of his fillies for the Melbourne Premier. Catalogued as Lot 302, she is from Lady Hepburn, a More Than Ready mare who scored on debut at Cranbourne in a career limited to three starts for Perry and trainer Mick Price.

The family is bursting with black type as second dam Lady Diva is one of 11 winners from Blue Diamond Stakes-Gr.1 winner Lady Jakeo, the others include Hollywood Park Gr.3 winner Red Arrow, Hong Kong Gr.3 winner Able Choice and the dam of Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1 winner Mrs Onassis.

Vinery has the only Domesday colt entered for Premier One and his value will escalate if Antelucan can win the Blue Diamond Stakes-Gr.1 on February 28. That Domesday filly was a debut winner of the Listed Ottawa Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day and she’s one of several Darley homebreds heading for Melbourne’s premier juvenile event.

Domesday is a son of Vinery Australia’s foundation sire Red Ransom (USA) and is based at Darley’s Victorian base in Seymour. His Premier colt (Lot 316) is from VRC Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes-Gr.3 winner Leveller. This Redoute’s Choice mare is owned by Cherylyn and Mark Lowe and the Queensland-based breeders have a tremendous strike-rate with Vinery. They sold Redoute's Choice colt Drumbeats as a yearling and he went on to win the Shannon Stakes-Gr.2 before retiring to stud in Queensland.

The Vinery consignment includes a filly by fellow Darley sire Helmet whose first yearlings averaged $102,000 on the Gold Coast. She is the first foal from unraced Hussonet (USA) mare Russky Hustler (Lot 489). Vinery also has the only Lope de Vega (IRE) colt for sale during Premier One. Going under the hammer as Lot 330, he is from Brazilian Oaks-Gr1 winner Loving New (BRZ) (by Mr. Prospector’s son Choctaw Ridge). Lope de Vega (Shamardal) claimed the 2014 European first-season sires’ premiership with 25 individual winners headed by stakes winners Belardo (Dewhurst Stakes-Gr.1), Hero Look (Italian Gran Criterium-Gr.2), Burnt Sugar (Sirenia Stakes- Gr.3) and Royal Razalma (Cornwallis Stakes-Gr.3).

Mick Price’s prediction that Vinery pulled off a coup buying Perth mare Night War will go under the microscope at Melbourne Premier. Night War (General Nediym) won the Karrakatta Plate-Gr.2 before transferring east for a $350,000 price tag. “It was a smart piece of business,” Price said after the sale went through in 2012. “Her record is terrific and she will certainly make that money back at stud.”

Price also trained her younger half-sister Samaready (More Than Ready) who carried Vinery’s green and white colours to Gr.1 victories in the Blue Diamond and Moir Stakes. Vinery reproduced that cross when Night War was covered by More Than Ready’s Golden Slipper-winning son Sebring. Their first foal is an outstanding chestnut colt and he has been catalogued as Lot 407. Play today at the best kizi games.
