At Sandown on the Lakeside course, Arbitration, scored a solid win in the Mix 101.1 Handicap (1600m) on Saturday.

Trained by the New Zealand based, John Wheeler, the four-year-old looked a great chance after his solid class 3 win at Sale win three weeks earlier.
Having his tenth start, Arbitration (ex Solamina by Scenic), claimed his third career win by a length from Maloose (Redoute's Choice - Classic Plume by Military Plume) with another Wheeler-trained galloper Double Classic (Classic Fame - Classic Yacht by Bemboka Yacht) a short half-head away in third.

Peter Moody and Luke Nolen have developed a spectacular partnership and it was on show again on Saturday when they combined with Thin And Crispy to take out the Listed Wellington Racing Club Stakes (registered name: Manfred) at Caulfield.

Nolen had Thin And Crispy well back in the field behind an even pace set by Road Worker.  As Road Worker was joined at the top of the straight by Bel Danoro and after racing wide without cover by Orange County.  Nolen had started his run through the field in the straight close to the rail.  With about 200m to go they grabbed Bel Danoro and then Thin And Cripsy showed guts to hold off a late charge by the race favourite VRC Oaks winner Serenade Rose, who came down the centre of the track.  Orange County couldn't run on after his hard run while Red Dazzler was a little flat over the concluding stages.

Thin And Crispy had only a short neck margin over Serenade Rose (Stravinsky - Rose of Tralee by Sadler's Wells) with a length-and-a-quarter back to Bel Danoro (Danehill - Bislotto by Bellotto) in third.

Thin And Crispy's win chalked up Brief Truce's 20th black type success and he became Vitessa's (by Success Express) first stakes winner.

Vitessa is a sister to the group three placegetter Rain Squall (by Success Express) and they both hail from a family that's produced the Group I New Zealand 2000 Guineas winner Facing the Music (by Sackford).

In chalking up his third win, Thin and Crispy took his career earnings past 110,000, ensuring his owners a fantastic return as Brian Guy had purchased him at the 2004 Magic Millions premier yearling sale for only $15,000.

Brief Truce's high quality galloper, Red Oog resumed from a short winter break after his successful weight-for-age win in the Doomben 10,000 during May, proving his success was no fluke to claim the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Red Oog, settled well back and overcame a chequered passage to land a gutsy victory over Dance The Waves (Hennessy - Timeless Winds by Mister C) with race favourite Spark of Life (Nine Carat - Sparkling Bounty by Celestial Bounty) a half-head away in third in a busy finish.

Red Oog (ex Mary Julia by Zoffany) will now contest The Shorts at Randwick then he'll head to Victoria for the Salinger Stakes on Derby Day at Flemington.

June 6th, 2005

Independent Stallions' Brief Truce, has been enjoying a stellar run of late, with 22 weeks into the year and 39 of his sons and daughters have already won 50 races and they have really been flying over the last few weeks - the natural ability of the breed highlighted by the Doomben 10,000-Gr.1 victory of the classy Red Oog.

The winner of eight races and over $722,000 in stakes, Red Oog is one of Brief Truce's 19 individual stakes winners and three Gr.1 winners.

A perfect choice for owner/breeders he is also a stallion attractive to commercial breeders - his yearlings at this year's major sales fetching up to $90,000 (over ten times his service fee).

The last few days have been particularly good for Brief Truce - his promising two-year-old son Bramada (ex Lady Violet by Old Crony) who made it two wins in a row this campaign after a soft win at Balaklava on May 25 beating Tonlyn Spirit who had been very competitive over the SAJC carnival.

He looked well placed in the Jayco Handicap (1450m) to take the event out by three-quarters-of-a-length from Tonlyn Spirit (Suresh - Financial Pleasure) with Tora Tora Tora (Tayasu Tsuyoshi - Live Comedy) the same margin away in third.

Long War was also successful on the same day at Bendigo, with another youngster Final Truce chalking up a nice win at Mornington on Sunday and Brief Alliance broke his maiden at Warrnambool on Monday.

May 22nd, 2005

Young trainer Joe Pride praised his former mentor, Hong Kong-based John Size, for "setting him up" when he greeted his first Group One victor Red Oog in the Doomben 10,000 (1350m) on Saturday.

Red Oog (ex Mary Julia by Zoffany), aided by the rails draw, held on to deny Our Egyptian Raine (Desert Sun - Egyptian Queen by Karioi Lad) by a head with Takeover Target (Celtic Swing - Shaby Stream Archregent) a half-neck away third. Patezza (Rubiton) ran on late from among well back on the home turn for fifth, only 1-1/4 lengths away.

Red Oog has been tried several times over distances up to 1400 metres but Pride has never been fully confident he would cope with the distance.

"I've tried him a few times but I've never really known if he could run the trip as he's had excuses every time," Pride said.

Despite Red Oog's victory, Pride is unsure whether the five-year-old son of Brief Truce, who has now won eight of his 22 starts, will proceed to the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm.

"He's only had 22 starts and there's a reason for it," Pride said.

"He can't stand up to too much racing."

Bowman said Red Oog's barrier one played a major role in the gelding's victory.

"Barrier one is important in these sort of races. I've had a lot to do with this horse and I think I've won four or five on him," Bowman said.

February 6th, 2005

Having his first run since Christmas time Red Oog was too strong in the Group 3 Nivea Visage Stakes (registered name: Star Kingdom Stakes) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Ridden by Hugh Bowman, who has a good record on the son of Brief Truce, Red Oog settled mid-field allowing the speedy Covet Thee to set a solid tempo.  Peeling out from his pocket at the 250m Bowman let Red Oog down and the five-year-old scored a half-length victory from Presently (Unbridled's Song - Centaine's Gift by Centaine) with Damigos (Danehill Dancer - Still Friends by Oenjay Star) a long neck away in third.

In collecting his seventh career victory Red Oog (ex Mary Julia by Zoffany) kept his winning percentage up when fresh - making it five fresh-up victories from six preparations.

Red Oog become's Brief Truce's 19th stakes winner he stands at the Independent Stallions Stud, Eurora for a service fee of $11,000 (inc gst).

November 21st, 2004

At Rosehill on Saturday Red Oog made up for his unlucky visit to Victoria recently in the Sentry Automotive Solution Hcp (1200m) in scoring an easy win giving the Independent Stallions, Brief Truce an interstate double.

Ridden by Hugh Bowman who brought Red Oog (ex Mary Julia by Zoffany) down the outside in the straight from worse than midfield to score by 1-1/4 lengths over Lord Revoque (Revoque - Berberia by Jackson Square) who nosed out Hasta Manana (Zabeel - Curtain Time by Rassendyll) for second.

"That's the real Red Oog and it's great to see him back," Pride said.

"He came through the trip to Melbourne and back very well which is the main thing.

"I may just give him one more run and then put him away and bring him back in the late autumn.

"I'm eyeing off the Brisbane winter carnival. There are some very nice races for him there and I think that will be where he can show his best."

Earlier in the day in Queensland, Legal Brief scored his eighth career win in the opening race on the card the Penfolds Handicap (1810m).

Legal Brief (ex Hate to Lose by Best Western) scored by three-quarters-of-a-length over Blood 'n' Bone (Spectrum - Unbeleevable by Zabeel) with Bohemian Dancer (Blues Traveller - Sent to War by Centaine) a nose away third.

October 10th, 2004

Warwick Farm trainer Joseph Pride is looking ahead to Melbourne for Red Oog, after the five-year-old's outstanding win in the Fox Sports Handicap (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Red Oog who ran the fastest sectionals of the day, when third behind Taikun and Star Of Florida on September 18, headed out today with blinkers on for the first time.  "He raced a little bit all over the place last start especially in the straight, so I thought they just might help him concentrate a bit," said Pride.

Ridden by Hugh Bowman, who had Red Oog settled off the speed, being set by Secret Land and was too strong for his rivals with his margin widening to win by 2-1/2 lengths from Force Apollo (Catrail - Clear Apollo by King Apollo) with Secret Land (Secret Savings - Pocaterra by Wolf Power) showing plenty of determination to hang on for third 1-1/4 lengths away.

In winning his fifth race from 15 starts, Red Oog (ex Mary Julia by Zoffany) clocked a quick 1:09.34 for the journey covering the final 600m in a hot 33.92.

A metropolitan interstate double for the Independent Stallions, BRIEF TRUCE over the weekend.

Courtney's Cuddles got the Brief Truce bandwagon rolling with with a solid half-length victory in the Classic Caulfield Advance Ticketing Handicap (1100m).

With the advantage of race fitness on her side Courtney's Cuddles began nicely from barrier six for Nick Ryan settling behind the early leaders Fine Kas and Cool And Composed (Stravinsky).

As the field rounded the home turn Courtney's Cuddles had been kept out wide on the heavy track by Ryan started who had to wind his way through the field.  Fine Kas hit the front with Tahni Girl the first one out after her and with Courtney's Cuddles racing up outside them.  Fine Kas (General Nediym - Fine Intent by Squill) had been grabbed by Tahni Girl (Redoute's Choice - Ballroom Babe by Citidancer) who found it tough going to sprint with 59kg's and with the benefit of race fitness and having the drop in the weights on Tahni Girl, Courtney's Cuddles (ex Sober Surprise by Noalcoholic) was a little to good for her in the run to the line to claim the win by half-a-length with another 1-1/4 lengths back to Fine Kas in third.

Courtney’s Cuddles was purchased by Hyland at the 2003 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale for just $40,000 and to date has returned connections more than $150,000 in prizemoney.

She was bred and offered for sale by Wood Nook Farm and is from the former classy metropolitan winner Sober Surprise, a half-sister to stakes-placed Smidgin.

In New South Wales at Randwick, Gabfest made it back into the winners stall after two years when he easily won the Leda Holdings Handicap (1400m).

In chalking up his fifth career victory Gabfest (ex Constant Chatter by Biscay) had three-quarters-of-a-length on Prime Century (Centaine - Pirouette by Dance Floor) with the same margin again to Dial Tones (Rubiton - Dialled by Yeats).

Visitors to the STALLIONS website, who may have read our last posting on Brief Truce's son True Glo just might have had a dollar on him at Doomben on Saturday, as the horse is going the best he has ever has at any time in his career.

True Glo took out the Group 3 Darley BTC Sprint Handicap over 1350m in sensational style, carrying top weight of 59 kilos. True Glo settled just behind the early speed set by Falkirk (Tale of the Cat - Madam Valeta) who changed legs a number of times in the straight, getting around Falkirk with 50metres to go, drawing level and stuck his head out for long head victory.

True Glo (ex Torelgo by Zeditave) now heads towards the group one Stradbroke Handicap as the current ruling favourite for Queensland’s richest race, and maybe he can give his trainer Lee Freedman his 100th Group 1 victory.

He will be ridden again by Darren Beadman, who spoke highly of True Glo’s Darley BTC Sprint effort.

“I wanted to save as much ground as possible with the big weight and there was an element of risk to that.

"They did leave him behind a bit early in the straight but once he was in the clear, he responded well. It was like he really wanted to win,” said Beadman.

May 16th, 2004

Brief Truce sired a winning interstate metropolitan double on Saturday with his four-year-old son True Glo displaying his class scoring a soft win in the Waterford Crystal Trophy at Moonee Valley kicking off his double.

There is no doubting True Glo's quality, last start he had finished seventh beaten just over three lengths in the group 1 Doncaster Handicap at Randwick, and at Moonee Valley where he carried 60 kilos after apprentice Nick Ryan's claim, he reminded all in attendance how much class he possessed.

Walking around the parade ring before the race looking at True Glo his coat was shining and he was relaxed enjoying the warm afternoon sun.  Looking a picture and in such a relaxed mood it was a miracle he didn't go around as short priced favourite and being so relaxed True Glo looked like he was a hack off for a Saturday afternoon hunt, not a determined racehorse.

On the track it's another matter as the field jumped away forming a line of six horses across the track young Ryan eased True Glo out the back to get out of the early speed battle carrying 60 kilos.  As the field rounded the and all the early speedsters feeling the pinch, Ryan angled True Glo out behind the race favourite Happy Strike (Gold Fever - Rich Haul by Haulpak).  Following Happy Strike through the traffic Ryan gave True Glo his head once they were in the clear to power home beating Happy Strike without a kick or tap of the whip by 1-1/4 lengths.  Dandy Kid (Demus - Miss Tecoma by Cerreto) finished the race off well 2-1/4 lengths away in third.

True Glo now heads to Brisbane for a winter campaign where his trainer Lee Freedman will run him in the BTC Sprint, and then on to the G1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 12th.

Ten minutes later in New South Wales, Red Oog helped provide his young Warwick Farm trainer Joseph Pride a metropolitan double including his 50th career win when he won the San Miguel handicap (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday afternoon.

Ridden by Darryl McLellan, Red Oog has won first-time out each campaign and kept his impressive strike rate up scoring an easy 1-3/4 length win over Zarouk (Last Tycoon - Pleasure Cruise by Fearless Pride) with After Class (Masterclass - Our Martee by Dedicated Rullah) a neck away in third.

Red Oog (ex Mary's Jula by Zoffany) now has Pride eyeing off Group competition for the four-year-old.

March 28th, 2004

An interstate metropolitan double for Brief Truce on Saturday.  Dual Victoria Handicap winner Debrief got the Brief Truce show on the road and will now head to Sydney for the AJC Easter Carnival after his last-stride win in the Anniversary Trophy (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Debrief has won the past two Group 3 Victoria Handicaps and was an unlucky third in last year's Group 1 Goodwood Handicap in Adelaide.

Stable foreman Wayne Hawkes said, "He tries hard and does love the Caulfield 1400 metres."

Debrief is typical of the durable Hawkes stable sprinters. While the six-year-old has started only 30 times, he can be expected to race for several more seasons as he loves racing and is sound as they come.

Debrief grabbed Regal Roller (Regal Classic - Arantxa Rose by Rancho Ruler) to win by a head, with the consistent Monahan Tweed (Monde Blue - Fine Habit by Habituate) a short head away third.

Just over two hours later in New South Wales at Rosehill Gardens, Brief Truce's sons fought out a thrilling finish in the Nature Vet Stakes (1500m).

True Glo (ex Torelgo by Zeditave) got the better of Gordo (ex Spirit by Danehill) when it mattered the most to claim victory by a half-neck. So Assertive (Zabeel - Assertive Lass by Zeditave) was a length away in third.

September 15, 2003

Brief Truce's six-year-old son, Fort Lavinia (ex Portview by Handy Proverb) stuck his head out at the right time to claim the Farranfore Handicap (1400m) at Belmont on Saturday.

Ridden by John Claite, Fort Lavinia held Binnu Boy (Euclase - La Coupole by Twig Moss) by a nose with a head back to Feel The Pulse (Sarab - Revival by Kings Island) in third.

Earlier in the day in Victoria at Moonee Valley, Brief Truce's talented son True Glo (ex Torelgo by Zeditave) finished a gallant second in the G1 Manikato Stakes (1200m).

June 22, 2003.

Legal Brief gave his trainer Ruth Copper the biggest win of her career when he claimed the Listed Stayers' Cup (2400m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

A four-year-old son of Brief Truce and aided by an inspired ride from James Innes who switched back to the inside to gain a late run, Legal Brief nabbed the tough Majestically (Maroof - Rosecay by Marscay) by a neck with the same margin to Ivy League (Doyoun - Hedera by Woodman).

A former jockey, Cooper has been training for three years and has had Legal Brief in her stable for just four months.

"When he came to me he'd never been over more than 1200 metres," she said.

"But I put him up over a distance and that has been the key to him, he just keeps on winning.

"He's by Brief Truce who has had a Caulfield Cup winner (Diatribe) so there was no doubt in my mind he could run 2400 metres."

The Group Three Grafton Cup (2400m) next month will be the next target for Legal Brief who has now won six of his 20 starts.

"We said if he went well today, he'd go to Grafton and that's definitely on now," Cooper said.

April 22, 2003

A history making double for Victoria’s Independent Stallion Station when Debrief won his second successive Group 3 Victoria Handicap at Caulfield on Monday, April 21 for his sire Brief Truce.

Debrief became only the second horse to win successive Victoria Handicaps when he just held on to beat Mr Magoo (Rustic Amber - Lady Cipayo), with another son of BRIEF TRUCE, True Glo (ex Torelgo by Zeditave), flying from last to finish third, less than a neck from the winner.

Debrief is a model of consistency for trainer John Hawkes and took his earnings passed $340,000 with his sixth win from just 23 starts. He may now follow last years path and head to Adelaide for a chance at Group 1 glory in the Goodwood Handicap.

True Glo showed that he was ready to take the next step into the big league with his performance, his first attempt in open stakes class. He has now won or place in 8 of his 12 starts for Lee Freedman.

April 6, 2003.

Quality three-year-old gelding True Glo (ex Torelgo by Zeditave) looked a lot fitter after his first-up second at Moonee Valley on March 22, before the Carlton Draught Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday, April 5.

True Glo ran right up to his looks sitting just off the pace, he swept to the front inside the final furlong and comfortably held C'est La Reve (Revoque - Malayan) by three-quarters-of-a-length with a short-half-head to Sensational Swing (Celtic Swing - Dual Sensation) third.

No doubt about it, True Glo, has got what it takes to be a class racehorse and can be placed to advantage by master trainer Lee Freedman.

March 16, 2003.

Red Oog (ex Mary Julia by Zoffany) came from well back in the field to claim the Fairfield Advance Handicap (1300m) at Warwick Farm on Saturday, March 15.

Red Oog flashed home to beat Moon Point (Citidancer - Gotheecho) by three-quarters of a length with In Good Time (Spinning World - Miss Lazarus) a neck away third.

March 1, 2003

Gordo (ex Spirit by Danehill) made a triumphant return to his Autumn campaign at Rosehill on Saturday, March 1st with a brilliant first-up win in the G3 Premier Express Clissold Stakes (1200m).

Gordo had a neck too spare over Presently (Unbridled's Song - Centaine's Gift) with a long-head back to Salgado (Danewin - Slight Chance) in third.

The group three event was action packed in the last 200 metres of the race with Gordo crowding fourth placegetter Defier (Dehere - Lilande).  Defier's rider Chris Munce fired in a unsuccessful protest.

Gordo is being aimed at the G1 Doncaster Handicap at Randwick on April 19.
