STALLIONS continues our series of profiles on horses beginning stud duties this spring.
Among them is the classic winning, Econsul.
Econsul is the foundation stallion for the newly established Woodside Park, in ownership of retired Toll Holdings chairman Peter Rosethorn, it spreads over 122ha at Tylden in Victoria.
A high-class performer, Econsul won the Listed Tatts (NSW) Widden Stakes (1100m) at Randwick as a juvenile and the Group I MRC Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield at three, as well as finishing third in the Group I VRC Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington.
The Caulfield Guineas is known as a "sire making" race with winners of the calibre of Lonhro, Show A Heart, Redoute's Choice, Red Anchor, Grosvenor, Sovereign Red and Luskin Star.
Econsul's value continues to soar as he is a son of the New Zealand based
Pins, who was a high-class racehorse, and has established himself as a leading sire.
Pins who is by Snippets and whose grandam is the wonderful broodmare Humour, won the Group 1 VRC Australian Guineas and the Group 2 events the MVRC Alister Clark Stakes, AJC Stan Fox Stakes, MRC Autumn Classic along with three other wins for more than $1.7 million in earnings.
In his new career Pins has proved a run away success. This season alone his siblings have earned more than $5.1 million. Three of them have won at the elite level, Porotene Gem (ex Rubyfoo by Danzatore) winner of the Levin Classic, El Segundo (ex Palos Verdes by Oakridge) winner of the MRC Underwood Stakes and C F Orr Stakes and Legs (ex River Century by Centaine) winner of the Hawke's Bay Ormond Memorial Stakes.
Five of Pins siblings have taken out Group 3 events during the 2006-07 season -
Stickpin (ex Reputedly by Quest For Fame), Crepe de Chine (ex Gio by Centaine),
Pins 'n' Needles (ex Raining by Centaine), Rosetti Bay (ex Crown Rose by Imposing) and
Rhysess (ex Sahrhys by Oakridge).
In his short career so far Pins has produced 15 stakes winners and 12 stakes placegetters along with 124 individual winners - at a winners-to-runners ratio of 59% - his progeny have collected more $10.1million.
Econsul's dam Gypsy Soul is a group one placed winner of five races by Centaine (Century -Rainbeam by Vain) from a distinguished New Zealand family.
Gypsy Soul's dam Sky Runner (Smuggler - Sky by Crest Of The Wave) is a half-sister to another Guineas winner,
Beechcraft (by Sea Anchor). The grandam of Gypsy Soul, Sky is a half-sister to the
Group 2 winner Star Lot, who in turn is the dam of Starline (winner of the
Group I New Zealand Oaks), Acumen and Lottery Prize) and the grandam of Starry Way (winner of the
Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes) and Pentathon (Group 2 New Zealand Cup and
O'Shea Stakes). She also feature's in the pedigree of Nediym's Glow (winner of the
Group 3 VRC Bloodhorse Breeders Stakes), Gold Zama (Listed Hawkesbury Gold Cup),
Athens (Group 3 Waikato Guineas) and Conference (Listed Manawatu Flying Hcp).
Gypsy Soul's sire Centaine is proving an increasingly influential broodmare sire with
58 stakes winners - 12 of them at Group One level - and $56 million in earnings to his credit. Some of his Group One winners include
Legs, Giovana, Cent Home, Regal Krona, Amalfi, Tully Thunder, Demerger and
Glamour Puss.
Woodside Park Operations' Manager Rodney Rae said, "Econsul is presently being syndicated and has already received support from some of Australia's most influential breeders including Lindsay Park Stud.
"Econsul has let down well - and we are looking forward to his new career - the horse has received good support from breeders' with 56 mares already booked into him this spring.
"On the back of his race track performances he possess a terrific colonial pedigree which is completely free of Northern Dancer," Rae continued.
A rising six year-old Econsul has had his introductory service fee set at $11,000 (inc gst) this spring.
