STALLIONS continue our series of profiles on horses beginning stud duties this spring.
Among them is the Group I winning son of Danewin, Excites.
Excites was a high-class son of Danewin who retired to Vinery Stud after just 10 starts due to an injury suffered in the VRC
Group 3 The Debonair. Despite a brief career on the track, Excites earned $527,960 in stakes, which included his all-important AJC Group I Sires' Produce Stakes win where he defeated De Lago Mist, Mentality, Universal Queen and Churchill Downs. He went on to run second in the MRC Group I Caulfield Guineas, a race with a great reputation for producing sires. Excites also finished
second in the Listed AJC Bailieu Hcp and third in the Group 2 MVRC AAMI Vase.
Vinery General Manager Peter Orton described Excites as "a magnificent animal."
"Any Group one winning juvenile is going to have enormous appeal in this market. He had an absolutely electric turn of foot when let down and his pedigree is first class," Orton said.
"He's 16.1 hands high and we are very excited to have bought into Excites and to have him on the farm."
Excites will be partly syndicated to farm clients with his original owner Peter Moran retaining a sizeable holding in him and he will support the horse with his impressive broodmare band which continues to churn out Group 1 winners.
Moran bred and raced Excites mother Staging. She won 10 races, including the AJC Surround Stakes, Light Fingers Stakes, Emancipation Stakes and BTC Carlton Cup all at Group 2 level. Along with victories in the
Group 3 BTC Courier Mail Classic and Coca-Cola Classic she won more than a million dollars for Moran.
Staging is out of the Best Western mare Cinerama a winner of two races and a sister to Bridget's Daughter, who in turn is the dam of the
Group 3 Godolphin Barb Stakes victor, Millennium Diamond (by Royal Academy). Staging is a sister to the Listed winner, Dashing Image, and a half-sister to the stakes placed Special Effects (by Salieri). Her dam Bold Bridget (by Bold Flip) was a very tough race mare with eight wins to her credit. She has since carved out a solid record at stud producing six winners from 11 foals. Among them is River Don (by Nisku) the winner of 12 races including the Listed Crown Lager Stakes.
Further down Excites female line is the Caulfield Cup, Futurity Stakes, Vic Health Cup and AJC All Aged Stakes winner Mannerism along with her stakes winning progeny Dandify and Manner Hill this is a continuation of the famous Teppo family.
Excites is by Danewin who as a racehorse was no slouch either, winning 13 races and more than $2 million in prize money. He was sharp enough to run a race record 1:09.71 when successful in the STC Frederick Clissold Handicap (1200m) and classy enough to claim five wins at the highest level during his career.
During his classic year Danewin won three races at the elite level including the AJC Spring Champion Stakes and the STC Rosehill Guineas both over 2000m and the BATC Doomben Cup (2020m).
This season Danewin's progeny have won five stakes events including the Group 2 QTC Sir Byrne Hart Stakes (Mitanni), the Group 3 BTC Premier's Cup (Theseo) and the Group 3 Tasmanian Derby (Currigee). Mr Aristos, Aneed, Son of Dane, Shaan, Doug's mate and Doojah have all picked up black type placing's a great feat considering Danewin has only been represented by 93 starters - 47 of them have won 89 races and collected more than $3.4million in earnings.
Excites fits nice into the Vinery Stud roster joining Benicio, Dubleo, Excites, More Than Ready, Mossman, Red Ransom
and Testa Rossa. Excites fee this spring has been listed as $13,750.00
