November 9th, 2008

Glenlogan Park Stud's Falvelon had a tremendous day out last Saturday at Doomben when he managed to do something a little bit special.  Represented by runners in only three races on the card, the former Champion Australian Sprinter incredibly sired the winners of all three races.

Kicking the day off for the Glenlogan Park stallion was the super impressive and highly promising 3YO gelding Doonbah Star in the QTIS 1350m event.  After being touted as a potential top-liner by the Trevor Bailey stable right from the moment they first threw a saddle on him, Doonbah Star looks destined to fulfill those predictions in the very near future.
“He has now won 3 of his 4 starts and it was only fitness that got him beaten on debut,” Bailey said. “There is no doubt he is one of the most exciting horses I have been associated with and we simply don’t know exactly how good he is.
“Everything we have ever asked him to gallop with he has literally just blown away and now he is winning his races with plenty up his sleeve.”
Bailey has decided to throw his Falvelon gelding into the deep end and will head south to Melbourne with the intention of lining up in the G2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) on November 15.
“He is a push button horse,”
Bailey added.
“He jumps so cleanly he usually lands a length in front of them and he musters speed very quickly.
“He can then lead or let them go around him – it simply doesn’t matter with this bloke as he is just so relaxed.
“A trip away at this stage of his career (his first preparation) may sound a little ambitious but I have no doubt he is a carnival-quality galloper and, at the worst, it will pay huge dividends in the future and may well be the making of the horse.”

The second leg of Falvelon’s winning city treble was delivered by the very exciting Helen Page trained juvenile debutant Powerful Light in the 1000m 2YO QTIS race.
Powerful Light did everything right after jumping well and landing on the fence to travel sweetly throughout before accelerating away on the point of the turn.
“She is very typical of the Falvelon's,” Page said after the race.

“She just wants to be a racehorse and is very relaxed around the stables.
“We knew she would give this race a really good shake as she has won her trials and jump-outs very easily and we have never really pushed her out.
“Every jockey that has ever sat on her has always got off and said what a great feel she has given them and that she would be pretty devastating once she was asked to let down and go.
“She travelled beautifully in the race, was always in control and then just breezed home to win as she liked.
“She will now be set for the Magic Millions 2YO race and we will just figure out a program to work back from there.
“It is really exciting for all concerned to have a horse with this much natural ability and we will just keep our fingers crossed that all will go smoothly up to the Magic Millions.”

The day then went up yet another level for Falvelon when, after delivering the winners of the 2YO and 3YO race, his 4YO gelding Fangles lead from barrier to box to land the 1350m Class 6 Handicap.
Fangles has provided many highlights for his connections during his short career and has built up a very imposing record during the process. From 21 lifetime starts he has already registered seven wins and as many placings - with the prospect of many more to come.

FALVELON then kept his great strike rate churning out the very next day when he had runners in one race and, not surprisingly, took that event as well!

Four-year-old gelding Geebeetee proved way too superior for his opposition over 1200m at the Sunshine Coast when the locally trained galloper won running away from them in a very impressive display that should see him head to town next time out.

Glenlogan Stud's, Falvelon, has produced another top juvenile this season when his son Mr Profumo took out the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes at Randwick.

Mr Profumo is another stakes winner for Denise Martin's syndication outfit Star Thoroughbreds and he joins the current Golden Slipper contender Sebring (More Than Ready) as they head to the world's richest race for juveniles.

"To have one would be great - two would be just unbelievable," Martin told Richard Callendar of TVN.

Mr Profumo is trained at the course by Gai Waterhouse, and he jumped away well from barrier six in the nine strong field showing tremendous gate speed to find the front easily.  Racing well under Blake Shinn the son of Falvelon held all at bay when challenged to claim his maiden win by a short neck over Krupt (Flying Spur - Categorical by Hennessy) with Mazuka (Exceed and Excel - Princess Polonia by Danzig) another neck away in third.

"An outstanding win from a very talented young racehorse," Waterhouse said from the Magic Millions Sales Complex where she is looking for her stars of tomorrow.

"I don't think I've ever been as confident with a young horse at the races."

"I loved the way he fought to the line - holding out the other horse (Krupt) all of the way up the straight,"
Waterhouse added.

"He deserves his chance in the (Golden) Slipper now. He will probably go in without another run."

Mr Profumo, who'd run third at Rosehill at his only previous outing, is turning out yet another bargain buy from the Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast.  The promising two-year-old was purchased for just $80,000 from the draft of Glenlogan Park at last year's sale.

"A great value buy - that's for sure," Waterhouse said of Mr Profumo.

Mr Profumo is the third stakes winner for the second season sire Falvelon - a former top class sprinter best remembers for dual victories in both the Hong Kong International Sprint and Doomben 10,000.

He is the second winner from three to race for the lightly raced St Covet mare Kiss and Covert.  Kiss and Covert is a half sister to the triple stakes placed juvenile Express Ball (Success Express) - a quality galloper who's since been exported to Macau.   All up he's won nine races and $175,300 and M$2,422,550.

Earlier in the day at Oakbank in South Australia, Choose Wisely broke her maiden status at her third run this preparation in the Malaysia Airlines Hcp (1050M).

Trained at Angaston by David Hayes the fillies previous outings had been very good in Melbourne behind Woppitt on debut and Hips Don't Lie down the stiff straight course at Flemington.  A good barrier draw and Dwayne Dunn in the saddle she proved too strong for Miss Blake (Blevic - Emerald Lake by Euclase) to beat her by a neck.

Choose Wisely is out of Saintly Halo (by Don't Say Halo) a winner of two races and the daughter of Falvelon is her first winner.   Saintly Halo is out of Weather Girl (by Twig Moss), a winner and half-sister to the black type placed Dantain and Our Danerac.  Although the family doesn't have much black type in the first couple of generations the Group 2 Sliver Slipper winner Rainbeam (by Vain) appears as the fourth dam. Rainbeam is the dam of CENTAINE (by Century) and in turn her daughters have produced The Group 3 VRC Frances Tressady Stakes winner, GALAPAGOS GIRL (by Dehere), The VATC Group 3 Tristrarc Stakes winner PROCRASTINATE (by Jade Hunter) and LAISSERFAIRE (by Danehill) a Group One winner in South Africa.

The wins by both juveniles are a timely reminder to buyers at the upcoming Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Yearling Sale of the quality of racehorses produced by Glenlogan Park based sire Falvelon.  Waterhouse is a big fan of the Falvelon stock and why wouldn't she be. She already has the group winning three-year-old Keiki as well as Magic Millions Classic contender and recent stakes winner She's Meaner by the sire.

Waterhouse no doubt has or will inspect every one of the 37 yearlings by Falvelon catalogued for the pin up Gold Coast sale which kicks away at 6pm on Monday.

March 17th, 2008

Gai Waterhouse produced two quality fillies for brilliant stakes wins on Saturday, Amelia's Dream in the Group 2 Silver Slipper (1100m) and She's Meaner turned in a fine performance to claim the Listed BTC Tommy Smith Slipper (1200m) at Doomben.

She's Meaner is by Glenlogan Park's resident sire Falvelon and is now regarded as one of the leading contenders in Easter Monday's $1.5 million Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast.

She's Meaner, was purchased by Blue Sky Thoroughbreds for $300,000, and is yet to be headed in any of her three starts.

The exciting youngster came off a solid win at Wyong at her previous outing when she beat a classy field in the $200,000 Magic Millions Wyong Slipper (1100m).

"We took her up to Queensland to win the Magic Millions (2YO Classic) on Monday week," Waterhouse said.

"She's right on track."

Waterhouse said she would be making any decision as to whether the filly could back up in the Golden Slipper after the Millions.

"We'll just wait and see," the Hall of Fame horsewoman noted.

"We're just worrying about the Magic Millions first."

The brilliant stakes win of She's Meaner and a strong win of Gatakers Bay at Doomben on Saturday provided a great boost to a bay colt to be sold at next week's Magic Millions Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast.

The yearling colt, a September 2006 foaling by Mossman, is a half-brother to both Doomben winners, being the latest produced by the Prince Salieri mare She's a Meanie.

She's a Meanie, herself a Group One winner of the Avondale Gold Cup during an illustrious racing career, is making quite a name for herself as a broodmare.

Her first foal Gatakers Bay, a son of Strategic, got home in a driving finish to win the Frantelle Handicap (1350m) - the last of eight races on the card.

Trained by Trevor Bailey and ridden to victory by Jason Holder, Gatakers Bay boosted his impressive race record to four wins from just eleven starts.

Incredibly Saturday wasn't the first time the half siblings had won on the same day. On Australia Day the pair were victories in their home states of New South Wales and Queensland.

During the second session of the Magic Millions Yearling Sale on March 25 the half brother to She's Meaner and Gatakers Bay will be up for sale. One of many stars from a quality packed draft from Glenlogan Park, the colt is catalogued as lot number 271.

February 25th, 2008

She's Meaner showed her speed and toughness with an all-the-way win in Sunday's Magic Millions Wyong Slipper.

The filly had been scratched from the Listed Widden Stakes at Randwick a week earlier after suffering a injury to her hoof and getting her to take her place in Sunday's $200,000 race after passing a veterinary inspection she proved her fitness and her class when she held off the fast-finishing Coniston Bluebird to win the 1100m feature by a neck.

Trained at Randwick by Gai Waterhouse and ridden by Blake Shinn, She's Meaner appeared to do the job well and she  was able to get a kick off the turn and hold all them all at bay.

A daughter of Falvelon, She's Meaner now heads north to contest the $1.5 million Magic Millions Classic Slipper (1200m) to be being held this year on March 24.

She's Meaner, a $300,000 yearling purchase, is a daughter of the Group I Avondale Gold Cup winner, She's A Meanie (by Salieri) and hails from a family that's produced plenty of winners with black type success including Art Success.

It has been a long time coming but the Queensland based Falvelon is slowly getting his progeny back to the track after the rotten equine influenza outbreak.

In Victoria, at Moonee Valley, The Mick Price yard had the three-year-old filly Monicablinco step out in the super Elegant Handicap (1200m) and with Craig Newitt up under 57.5kilo's the chestnut daughter of Falvelon kept her winning strike rate at fifty percent in claiming her third success at her sixth outing.

Monicablinco jumped way from barrier seven and Newitt was able to have her sitting just off the speed as Centexpress, who was caught wide after jumping, charged across the field to take up the running.  Monicablinco raced up alongside her as they cornered and found plenty to claim the victory by three-quarters-of-a-length from Stanza Spirit ( Invincible Spirit - Stanza Blue by Raise a Stanza), who was making her debut and impressed with her courage as she tried very hard to get to the winner.  Centexpress (Centaine - Brooke's Express by Snippets), battled on well for third two lengths further away after being handy all the way.

Monicablinco was sent out as race favourite and looked well placed in the restricted company after mixing it with classy fillies Code Black and Stratella at Caulfield three weeks earlier.  She is out of the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes (1000m) winner, Miss Terrain (by Spartacus) a three-quarter sister to the Snippets mare, Sugarbomb a winner of four races and placed in three Listed events.

The female line of Monicablinco descends back to the VRC Oaks and AJC Sires' Produce Stakes winner, Diamond Shower (by Zephyr Zip) and the stakes winning Baguette mare, Jewel Flight.

In Queensland on Saturday at Eagle Farm, Mistress Of Dreams, recorded one of the best wins on the card when she thrashed her opposition in the Hamilton Hotel Hcp (1600m).

A daughter of former champion sprinter Falvelon, Mistress Of Dreams cruised to a 1-1/4 length win over Equable (Faltaat - Be Cool by Grosvenor) in the Hamilton Hotel Hcp (1600m) at Eagle Farm.

Trained on the course by Les Ross, Mistress of Dreams was coming off a sixth placing in a 1400m event at the track on July 7th when she appeared to be just get warm over the last 400m of that event.  The extra distance on Saturday worked in her favour.

Ross told SKY Channel that he will give the juvenile a short break and prepare her for next seasons Group I Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield in October.

Mistress of Dreams is out of Grace and Glamour (by Dr Grace) a daughter of the Group 2 STC Reisling Slipper Trial and the Group I AJC Oaks runner-up, Sunshine Sally (by Cheraw) a sister to the Listed Hawkesbury Cup winner, Jack Attack and three-quarter sister to Penghulu (by Belele), winner of 13 races and the Group I MRC Toorak Hcp.

The bay filly was purchased at the 2006 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Yearling sale by New Zealand agent Paul Beamish for just $25,000 and in recording her second victory at her eighth start Mistress of Dreams took her career earnings past $41,000.

FALVELON surged to the top of the Australian first-season sires’ premiership for individual winners when Guissepino scored an emphatic six-length victory in the Carlton Draught 2YO Hcp (1200m) at Doomben on Wednesday (June 20).  Falvelon has now sired 10 Australian juvenile winners this season, one ahead of Rock Of Gibraltar and Johannesburg.

But the bare facts don’t underline how the Glenlogan Park sire has bucked the odds to claim top spot on the table.

From his first crop of 88 foals, Falvelon has had 26 starters for 10 winners of 13 races in Australia.

Rock Of Gibraltar had 107 foals and has been represented by 30 starters for 9 winners of 13 races. Johannesburg sired 120 foals in his first season shuttling to Australia with 32 starters for 9 winners of 9 races.

Falvelon also has the quality to go with the numbers. He has sired four stakes performers including the Group 2 winner Keiki.

Guissepino (ex Miss Cortona by Puissance) is a mirror-image of her sire - right down to the white snip on her snout - and trainer Alan Bailey thinks the filly has a very bright future.

“She has impressed me right from the time she entered the stable,” Bailey revealed. “She was never on the track on debut behind Rosekay Heart last Wednesday. She came through the run so well, I had no qualms backing her up within seven days.

Guissepino jumped to the front second-up at Doomben and cleared out in the straight to spreadeagle a capacity field of fillies running the final 600m in 35.32s. That sectional was an amazing 2.58 seconds faster than Agnes Dream took to win the colts division!

Guissepino is raced by owner-breeders Reg and Judy Clairs. They also part-owned her dam Miss Cortina who is a winning half-sister to SAJC Derby winner Testafiable.

“She won unextended on Wednesday and I will look for a race over 1350m or 1400m for her next start,” Bailey added. “She’s bred to get over more ground and I’m sure she will develop into a very nice type as a three year-old.”

FALVELON’S STAR 2yo filly Keiki will need more than her fair share of luck if she is going to win the Group Two QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes at Eagle Farm this Saturday after
drawing 18 in a capacity field.
The Gai Waterhouse trained filly is coming off an outstanding victory in the Group Two Champagne Classic at Doomben a fortnight ago against the colts, and winning jockey
Damien Oliver will once again take the mount as he endeavours to make it two from two aboard the classy youngster.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse was bubbling with excitement after Keiki worked the house down on Tuesday morning. “Nash (Rawiller) jumped off and said it was absolutely beautiful work,”
Waterhouse told connections. “He said she felt fantastic and was going to be giving Saturday’s race an almighty shake. She is such a robust, strong, trouble-free filly and she
is really thriving on the racing. She is right at the top of her game.”
However, that confidence must now have been somewhat dented by the horror alley in this quality race. There is absolutely no question Keiki has the class to win the Sires’
Produce Stakes, nevertheless, she will need a lot of luck to get across from the outside alley and find a suitable position without burning too much petrol. Keiki will be tackling the 1400m
for the first time and, all going well, Waterhouse will keep her in Brisbane for the Group 1 T J Smith over 1600m on June 11.

FALVELON continues to press a few of his more “illustrious” rivals in the highly sought after battle for the most number of winners by a first season sire. And there is no question he
has them looking worriedly over their shoulders as he makes his charge towards the line .
Currently sitting on 8 wins, and in second position, behind Rock Of Gibraltar and Johannesburg, (who both have 9), Falvelon’s statistics are fantastic when closely analysed.
Amongst a host of other favourable comparisons, he has got his 8 winners from just 24 runners as opposed to Rock Of Gibraltar’s 9 winners from 29 runners and Johannesburg’s
30 runners respectively. He can also boast a 75% earners to runners ratio compared to 62% and 66%. And he has achieved these results from only 88 live foals, whereas his two
closest rivals had 107 (R.O.G.) and 120 (J).

It’s easy to see why Falvelon is regarded as a stallion who looks set to make a very significant impact over the upcoming years.
