In-form Brisbane trainer Liam Birchley sent his flashy son of Mossman, My Man
Murphy, around in the Southern Qld Steel Bundamba Plate Hcp (1200m) at Ipswich
on Saturday after a nice return to racing two weeks earlier at the Sunshine
Coast where he went down narrowly to Cardio.
On Saturday, My Man Murphy, was ridden by Shane Scriven and jumping from
barrier three in the 12-horse field he sat just behind the early leader
Conquering Spirit. Rounding the home turn Scriven nursed the inexperienced
colt and once balanced in the straight he gave the flashy chestnut some rein and
My Man Murphy drew away to beat Master Hugh (Success Express - Kym's Conquest by
Zeditave) by a length-and-a-half with Conquering Spirit (Invincible Spirit -
Prav by Scrupules) a short neck away in third.
My Man Murphy was purchased by Birchley at the 2006 Magic Millions Gold Coast
premier yearling sale for $32,500.00 and with Saturday's purse topping up his
earnings the two-year-old has already paid for himself.
He is out of the Bengal Fire mare Fair Occasion who hails from a family
that's not produced any black type winners for a number of generations, however,
back in his fifth dam the W.S. Cox Plate hero, Rising Prince (by Round Top) does
appear.
My Man Murphy is one of 43 winners for his sire Mossman, who missed last
season after suffering from a severe bout of colic, from just 76 progeny to
race. Along with four stakes winners and more than $3million in earnings
by his progeny Mossman services will be in high demand at Vinery Stud this
season where he stands at $27,500.00 (inc gst).

The Golden Slipper jigsaw became even more jumbled after another day of lead up races on Saturday, adding to the chaos was
the Mossman filly Pure Energy. Toowoomba trainer Ron Maund emerged as a genuine contender for Slipper honours when the filly won the
Group 2 Reisling Stakes with stable mate Gold Edition (Lion
Hunter - Glimmers by Success Express) running third.
Maund’s impact on the group one race will depend on the generosity of owners Kevin and Tanita
O’Brien, as they need to part with a $135,000 late entry fee to make Pure Energy
(ex Madam Curie by Bletchingly) a starter in the $3million Slipper on Saturday
week.
One of the traditional lead-up races to the Golden Slipper, the Reisling was expected to be dominated by Blue Diamond Stakes runner-up
Miss Finland and Magic Millions heroine Mirror Mirror. However,
Mirror Mirror ran a shocker, pulling up with bone chips, and Miss Finland had
trouble handling the right-handed track at her first attempt.
Runner-up Boom Time Savings (Secret Savings - Boom Boom Baby by True Hero),
was fitted with blinkers for the first time and over raced, taking the field along at a solid tempo and looked set to sprint away for an easy win before
Pure Energy knuckled down to her task to win by a length.
“The leader skipped away on the turn but all credit to my filly she dug deep and found plenty,” said winning jockey Greg Childs.
Pure Energy cost $110,000 at the 2005 Magic Millions Yearling Sale from Peter Moran’s Noble Park Stud. She is a full-sister to the 2005 Group 2 Schillaci Stakes winner
Segments.

Pure Energy lived up to a recent barnstorming trial victory at Toowoomba when she scored an authoritative win in
Saturday's $101,050 Magic Millions 2YO Plate (900m) at the Gold Coast.
A two-year-old daughter of popular colonial stallion Mossman, Pure Energy improved sharply in a recent trial when she was fitted with blinkers for the first time.
"The blinkers have been the key," winning trainer Ron Maund said. "She trialled with them on the other day and she won by about eight or ten lengths."
"And if she wasn't a good thing (in the race) it would have taken something pretty smart to beat her."
Pure Energy (ex Madam Curie by Bletchingly), with local hoop Glenn Lynch in the saddle, exploded to the front with over a furlong to go and from that point gave her rivals no chance - zipping home over the final 600 metres in a sizzling 33.66
seconds, with her overall time being 51.74 seconds.
Well fancied Unintentional (Show a Heart - Viva Voce by Woodman) did best for second two-and-a-quarter lengths
back with recent Canberra winner Shirestar (Beautiful Crown - Corundum Star by
Cossack Warrior) in third, another half-neck back.
Pure Energy is a full sister to stakes winner and Group One placegetter Segments,
she was purchased by Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm - the property of Kevin and Tanith O'Brien - for $110,000 at last year's Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
"It's a great thrill," a beaming Kevin O'Brien said in the winner's stall. "Hopefully we might be back here again - let's hope so anyway."
The O'Brien family have been active buyers over the road during the past two days at the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Yearling Sale - searching for their next racetrack star.
Already the Lauriston team have signed for three yearlings from the first two sessions at a spend of $410,000.

Talented mare Segments made a one-act affair of the MRC Group 2 Schillaci Stakes
(1000m) when she cleared out to win the keenly contested sprint by more than three lengths.
Amazingly, it was only her second win from 17 starts, the previous victory registered on debut as a two-year-old when she won the AJC
Listed Gimcrack Stakes.
In between drinks, she did manage a magnificent second behind Fastnet Rock in the
Group I Oakleigh Plate, also at Caulfield, so the Group 2 victory for
the nice looking bay is well justified.
Segments was bred by Noble Park Stud and offered at the 2003 Classic Yearling Sale, where she was retained by her breeders after bidding stalled at $17,500.
She was later sold privately to well known breeder Stuart Ramsey and is now prepared by Peter Moody.
Segments is by highly successful young sire Mossman from the Bletchingly mare Madam Curie (NZ), a placed daughter of Cure, winner of the 1986
Group I New Zealand 1000 Guineas at Christchurch.
Later that day in Queensland at Eagle Farm, Star of Asia, gave Mossman
a metropolitan double when she claimed the Pink Slipper Quality (1400m) at Eagle Farm.
Star of Asia (ex Crimson Lotus by Sovereign Red) defeated Mesmerising
(Beautiful Crown - Envelop by Dalmacia) by a short-neck with Canadian Shuffle
(Canadian Silver - Miss Shuffle by Salieri) another length away in
third.
Star of Asia was a cheap purchase for her trainer Alan Bailey, who
only paid $26,000 for her from the draft of Noble Park at the 2003 Magic
Millions yearling sale.
Bailey has reported that he will now set Star of Asia for the
summer Magic Millions carnival at the Gold Coast in January.

On Saturday at Rosehill Gardens, Mosso kept his winning streak up in the the Bamford Associates Lawyers 2YO Handicap 1200m.
Jumping well from barrier five for Len Beasley, Mosso was then forced to
travel outside the early leader over the first 800m. Rounding the turn,
Beasley, kept Mosso going to never be headed to score by
three-quarters-of-a-length from Mr Owl (Redoute's Choice - It's Not On by
Tierce) with a neck to Frozen (Redoute's Choice - Raindrops by Brief
Truce).
In winning his second race from third career starts, Mosso
(ex Little Rory by Rory's Jester), clocked 1:10.93 covering his last 600m in
34.62 carrying 57.5kgs.

Trainer Gerald Ryan is looking for more Brisbane Winter Carnival success by confirming plans for his two weekend winners by
Mossman, Mosso and Our Sweet Moss.
Talented two-year-old Mosso (ex Little Rory by Rory's Jester) earned himself a trip to Brisbane after careering away for an emphatic win in the
Parramatta Leagues Club Handicap at Rosehill on Saturday.
Ridden by Lenny Beasley Mosso powered away with a four-and-a-half-length win setting a new class record of 1.03.10 for the 1100m journey in the process.
In doing so the colt re-payed his connections the great faith they had for him after having only one previous run when fifth in the Listed Canonbury Stakes as favourite back in December.
"You had to ignore the first run he had, he choked down and didn't take a breath half way through the race. The long break has allowed him to mature and it's done him the world of good. He'll go to Brisbane now and run in a 1200m race before the Australia Post Stakes." Part-owner Damion Flower said.
The $100,000 Listed Australia Post Stakes (1400m) will be run at Eagle Farm on June 26 and was last year taken out by Mossman’s daughter
Our Sweet Moss.
That particular filly has raced herself into a Stradbroke Handicap with a decisive Eagle Farm victory on Saturday. Our Sweet Moss was positioned second outside the leader and favourite Wasimah
(Danehill - Kapchat) in the Listed Dane Ripper Quality (1300m) to edge away in the home straight for a half-length win.
Gerald Ryan immediately declared Our Sweet Moss had done enough to earn a shot at the $1million prizemoney
on offer in the AAMI Stradbroke over 1400m, on Saturday, June 11.
Ryan said that the filly will be easily inside the ballot box when the field is decided on
Tuesday, she has only 48.5kg, that's 5.5kg under weight for age. With
an excellent Eagle Farm record with three wins a second from five starts, Our
Sweet Moss will increase her value ten-fold if she can claim the elite prize.
Mossman stands his second season at Vinery Stud this season and has fully recovered from his colic last year which cut his 2004 season short.

Following two promising earlier runs, Noodle Night broke her maiden in style at Eagle Farm on Saturday in the Rosemount Estate Handicap (1000m).
Noodle Night didn’t let her backers down, sent out as favourite she had 3-1/2 lengths over Funlove (Shovhog – Avonells by Tirol), with Nik Nak Noee (Lion Hunter – Rem Bem Booee by Don’t Forget Me) 3 lengths away third.
Noodle Night is the same colour as her sire, Mossman, out of the lightly raced Star Watch mare Night Out and
bred by Lyndhurst Stud Farm. She was purchased by her trainer Shaun Dwyer
at the 2004 Gold Coast Premier Yearling sale for $25,000 and with her winners
cheque from Saturday she has returned $46,000 to her connections.
October 31st, 2004
Nice and fresh from a winter spell, The Spit clamed his second
career victory in the Marsh Air Conditioning Hcp (1200m) at Rosehill on
Saturday.
The Spit (ex Zephyr Asset by Zephyr Zip) had a half-length on Kiss
My Fuji (Fuji Kiseki - Tranquil Life) with Vitesse Dane (Danewin -
Riverbed by Bao Lack) antoher three-quarters-of-a-length away in
third.
The Spit covered the journey in 1:10.63 covering his last 600m section
in 34.38.
October 3, 2004
Lady Longueville made it two wins from three starts when she won the Carlton Draught
Hcp (1010m) at Doomben on Saturday.
Lady Longueville (ex Light Snack by Vain) settled well off the
speed and didn't appear to be travelling however once she got into gear over the
final 200m she flew to to cut down Front Door (Clang - Via Maris
by Sea Road) to score a last stride victory.
Noble Gaze (Intergaze - Dreams Delight by New Regent) was a
long neck away in third.
August 30th, 2004
Talented juvenile Reward made it four wins from eight starts
when taking out the Acropolis Handicap (1600m) at Belmont Park in Western
Australia on Saturday.
He is one of 11 individual winners by his highly successful first season sire Mossman, who
will be standing this spring at Vinery in the Hunter Valley for a fee of $16,500.
Reward was bred in Queensland at Peter Moran’s Noble Park Stud, the former home of Mossman. He is the first foal of Natural Jackie, an unraced daughter of stakes-placed Starlight Express, a full sister to Golden Slipper winner Century Miss.
Reward was selected and purchased from the 2003 Classic Yearling Sale for $30,000 by Inglis Executive Director, Jonathan D’Arcy, acting for Perth trainer George Daly.
“I liked him (Reward) from the first time I saw him up at Noble Park Stud,” said D’Arcy. “George and I were both impressed with the Mossman stock as likely runners and Reward was our top pick.”
Reward is now returning a profit for his connections collecting more than
$72,000 in prizemoney in his short career.

Vinery Stud 's
gamble
to purchase a
significant shareholding in Mossman from Noble Park Stud halfway through
last season no longer appears a gamble when his daughter Our Sweet
Moss comfortably won the G2 Silver Shadow Stakes at Warwick Farm on
Saturday.
Prepared by Gerald
Ryan-trained
the filly
has returned from a winter break in great style as she took out the first leg of
the 'Princess Series' over 1200m.
Last campaign the
filly had four
starts,
she scrambled
home a nose winner of a maiden at the Sunshine Coast in December before
finishing third to Golden Fox (Foxhound) in the G3 Champagne Classic at
Doomben in May. Three
weeks later she earned her first stakes score with a 1 ½-length victory in the
Listed Sir Douglas Wadley Quality at Eagle Farm. Our Sweet Moss rounded
out her juvenile year when many thought she was a touch lucky to defeat the
Lee-Freedman trained Chut in the Listed Australia Post Stakes at Eagle
Farm.
While she possessed a fine record it was the statement by the normally reserved
Ryan that “she is easily the best two-year-old filly I've had since I've been
in Queensland," that brought the daughter of Mossman under notice.
Our Sweet Moss stamped her class by
defeating
Wager (Flying Spur - Occasional Gain by Lunchtime)
by three-quarters-of-a-length and
Trezevant (Flying Spur - Tennessee Magic by Bletchingly)
a further 1-1/2 lengths away in third.
A homebred for Dr Brian Purtle and his wife Robin, Our Sweet Moss takes
her record to 4 wins and one third from five starts for earnings of $284,550.
Our Sweet Moss is the second foal of the Straight Strike mare Directe
Attaque a hard-knocking mare that earned over $112,000 with six wins from 59
starts over five seasons in South Australia and Queensland. The Purtle’s
purchased Directe Attaque for $13,000 from the Vinery consignment at the 2003
Australian Broodmare sale. Following Our Sweet Moss Directe Attaque
produced a now 2yo colt by Peintre Celebre, a yearling colt by Show A
Heart and was served by Mossman again last season.

Talented juvenile Reward made it three wins in succession when taking out the open two year old event at Belmont Park in Perth on Saturday.
He is one of 11 individual winners by his highly successful first season sire
Mossman, who will stand the coming season at Vinery in the Hunter Valley for a fee of $16,500.
“George and I were both impressed with the
Mossman stock as likely runners and Reward was our top pick.”
Reward has won three races and placed once from just five starts earning $40,960 in
prizemoney, a handy return for his connections.
June 25th, 2004
Talented filly Our Sweet Moss is Group One-bound in the spring after her courageous win in the
listed Australia Post Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Responding to a perfect ride from jockey Jim Byrne, Our Sweet Moss held off a determined challenge from
the favourite Chut (Real Quiet - La Grange by Rory's Jester) to win by a long head with Magic Pins
(Pins - Lady Madoona by Kingdom Bay) 1-1/2 lengths away third.
Trainer Gerald Ryan has always held Our Sweet Moss in high esteem and wasted no time in outlining ambitious plans for the daughter of
Mossman.
"The plan has always been to give her three runs in Brisbane during the carnival before she has a break for two weeks then get set for the Princess Series for three-year-old fillies in Sydney in the spring," Ryan said.
"She is easily the best two-year-old filly I've had since I've been in Queensland."
Ryan believes the filly's nature has contributed to her on-track success.
"She's a very alert, intelligent filly and very athletic to go with it," he said.
November 23, 2003
Noble Park Stud's young stallion Mossman had the perfect start to his
career when his daughter Segments
(ex Madam Curie by Bletchingly) impressively won the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) at Randwick
in October.
Then at Eagle Farm on Saturday, Star Of Asia (ex Crimson Lotus
by Sovereign Red) clocked up Mossman's second winner with a successful
debut in the Northern City Finance Brisbane West Handicap (1000m).
Prepared by Alan Bailey at the Gold Coast Star Of Asia scored by
half-a-neck from Caffe Francais (Latarmiss - Whipped by Success Express)
with a neck back to Selma (Thunder Gulch - Celebrity by Success Express) in third.
Trainer Bailey said after the win “We will keep her going for now and if she qualifies for the Magic Millions we will take her on to that and if she doesn’t go on she can go to the paddock.”
Bailey paid $26,000 for the filly at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Premier yearling sale
providing her connections with an immediate return of $15,300.
October 6, 2003
Mossman has started off his new career with a bang when his daughter Segments
impressively won the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) at Randwick this afternoon.
Segments (ex Madam Curie by Bletchingly) has plenty of growing to do and
has plenty more to learn but at Randwick this afternoon she displayed her raw
talent and professionalism in her win.
Segments is raced and bred by her owners Peter and Wendy Moran, who
also stand Mossman at their Noble Park property in Queensland.
Segments won by a length-and-a-quarter from Rich Megadale
(Armidale - Oil Rich by Valiant Prospect) with Mi Chiamo (Catbird - Lady
Bureaucrat by Bureaucracy) a further short head away in third.
Segments clocked 59.46 seconds for the 1000m journey and she covered the final 600m in
35.70, not bad going considering the track was rated slow.
