STALLIONS continue our series of profiles on first season sires beginning stud duties this spring and among them is Old Deuteronomy.

The precocious Storm Cat stallion Old Deuteronomy (USA) has been acquired by Emirates Park and has been added to stud‘s Victorian arm for the 2008 breeding season.

A seven year-old son of champion sire and proven sire of sires Storm Cat, he comes from the family of Group I winner Scenic (IRE) who has enjoyed resounding success as a sire in Australia.

Old Deuteronomy is the first foal of Seeking The Gold mare Jewel In The Crown, a winner in Ireland.

Seeking The Gold (Mr. Prospector) is best known in Australia as the sire of Group I winner and now successful stallion Secret Savings, standing at Emirates Park in New South Wales), while Jewel In The Crown is a daughter of the Northern Dancer mare Christabelle and the Raise A Native mare Where You Lead.

In addition to being a half-sister to Idyllic (the dam of Scenic, Silent Warrior and Cupid), Christabelle is a half-sister to the revered broodmare Slightly Dangerous as well as I Will Follow and Sequel.

Slightly Dangerous gained her status by producing three winners at the elite level in English and Irish Derby winner Commander In Chief, the Goodwood Sussex Stakes and Ascot Queen Elizabeth II winner as well as I Will Follow and Sequel.

She also became the dam of Group 2 winner Dushyantor whose efforts included a second in the English Derby; the stakes winner Jibe; as well as the stakes-placed winners Deploy, Totality, Timefighter and Shirley Valentine.

I Will Follow’s progeny include the Group I Longchamp Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe and Epsom Coronation Cup winner and successful sire, Rainbow Quest, while Sequel’s offspring included the multiple stakes winner Family Tradition.

Old Deuteronomy was a classy performer with wins in England and the United States from 6f (1200m) to 8.5f (1700m). He was a particularly smart two year-old with seconds in the Group I Curragh Phonenix Park Stakes (beaten a length by One Cool Cat (USA)) and Group 2 Goodwood Richmond Stakes and fourth in the Group I Deauville Prix Morny.

Racehorses of 2003 described the then-juvenile as a “strong, close-coupled colt… has a quick action” and awarded him the good Timeform rating for a two year-old of 109.

Old Deuteronomy is to stand at an introductory service fee of $5500.00 (inc gst).
