The Weanlings Are Coming
Magic Millions will conduct its
2008 National Weanling sale at the Gold Coast commencing
on Tuesday 27th May at 11am through to Friday 30th May
inclusive. There are 807 babies catalogued with healthy
numbers entered by leading commercial sires such as Redoute's
Choice, Encosta De Lago, Flying Spur, Fastnet Rock, Red
Ransom, More Than Ready, Secret Savings, Iglesia, Show
A Heart, General Nediym, Anabaa, Catbird and others too
numerous to mention.
Video of all of Sweetenham Stud's yearlings is now online
here......
It presents a great opportunity
for breeders to pinhook a youngster with a view to turning
a quick profit in a relatively short timeframe or to pick
up a nice racing prospect at a reasonable price. The market
to trade weanlings commercially has only emerged as a significant
factor in the Australian bloodstock industry in the past
few years, the success of this particular MM sale having
played a large part. For instance the Redoute's Choice
- Gypsy Dancer colt which topped last year's sale at $1.15
million was reoffered by Coolmore this year at Inglis Easter
and realised $2.2 million to the bid of Patinack Farm.
On the racing front, graduates of the 2006 edition, despite
a restricted season in NSW and QLD, already include stakes
performers Pegase, Nato, Saratoga, Daddys little Girl and
the impressive recent first start winner Dr Doute's.
As
usual Bluebloods will be producing the invaluable Sales
Guide for the entire series ( weanlings broodmares and
yearlings ) with sale histories of the relevant families
and Apex Ratings. These will be available at the usual
location at the sales complex shortly before the sale or
for earlier delivery can be purchased online by ordering
here.

The Broodmares
To be conducted over 5 days,
2-6 June, and with more than 1000 mares catalogued, the
Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, in its few short
years, has established itself as one of the major thoroughbred
auctions held in this part of the world.
The headline act of this
year’s sale, just as she
was on the track, is clearly the multiple Group One winner
and $2m earner Divine Madonna (click
here for a video).
To be offered as Lot 951, about 2 hours into Session
One on 2 June, the daughter of Hurricane Sky and My Madonna
ranks as one of the best race mares of the past decade.
Her Bernborough-like finishes combined with her weight
carrying ability and remarkable consistency over 4 seasons
made her a great favourite with racegoers across the
nation.
The sale’s only other
Group One winning mare, the 2003 Queensland Oaks winner
Zagalia, is the first lot through the ring.
Offered on account of Strawberry
Hill Stud, Zagalia, which also ran fourth to Fields of
Omagh in the Cox Plate, fifth to Makybe Diva in the Melbourne
Cup and sixth to Mummify in the Caulfield Cup in 2003,
is one of 6 mares in the sale served last season by Australia’s highest priced
stallion, Redoute’s Choice.
Magic Night Stakes-G2 winner
Countess Christie, Edward Manifold Stakes-G2 winner She
Will Be Loved and Hasna’s
imported dam, They Say, are among the others.
One mare which may well
be pencilled into Redoute’s
Choice’s book in 2008 is Lot 1256A, appearing in
the Supplementary Catalogue, being the stakes winning St
Covet mare Shalt Not. The memory of this season’s
brilliant Redoute’s Choice – Shalt Not filly,
Amelia’s Dream, is not likely to fade for some time.
Stakes winners from recent
times catalogued for sale include the Catbird mare Litter,
Timbourina (served by Rock of Gibraltar), Sharp (More
than Ready), Segments (Flying Spur) and the three year
old filly, Musidora, winner of the VRC Vanity S-G3 earlier
this year. The latter is by Danehill’s
successful sire son Rock of Gibraltar from the family of
super sires Flying Spur and Encosta de Lago.
The thousandfold broodmares
in next month’s extravaganza
were covered by some 160-odd sires in 2007, taking up 17
reference pages at the back of the book. That in
itself will lead to opportunities for many.
Breeders, armed with their
dog eared copies of the Blueblood’s
Sales Guide, will spend hours poring over the catalogue,
checking yearling sale results over the past year or two,
looking for that edge which may result in a windfall somewhere
down the track.
It’s what the broodmare
sale game is all about.
