Barbajuan

STALLIONS continue our series of profiles on horses’ retiring to stud duties this spring and among them is Barbajuan.
Barbajuan, is a newcomer to Eagle Park Stud in 2009, and should appeal to breeders as he’s a quality son of Danehill Dancer from the unraced Saddler’s Hall mare, Courtier who has numerous Australian performers who are relations.
One of those relations is the Anabaa filly Donna Natalia, a winner of the AJC Gimcrack Stakes by 5-3/4 lengths and in race record time.  Donna Natalia is from another Gimcrack winner, Marskin, a three-quarter sister by Marscay to Kidman’s Cove (three Sydney G2 wins among 16 successes were in the Apollo Stakes, Expressway Stakes and Canterbury Stakes). Another three-quarter relation to Marskin, the Australian bred Bletchingly filly Dream Appeal, returned after winning sprints up to Group I level in South Africa and produced the Red Ransom colt Charge Forward. A winner of four stakes races in Sydney, the Group I Galaxy, Group 2 Todman, San Domenico and the Listed Breeders’ Plate. Charge Forward has the qualifications and the opportunity to be a very good sire at Arrowfield Stud having got his stud career off in great fashion with his first runners this season.

Sydney’s Dream, Marskin, and also the Luskin Star stakes winning filly Settler’s Cove are all from Dream Appeal, an American bred half-sister by Valid Appeal to Par Excellance, the third dam of Barbajuan.
Canadian Oaks-winning Par Excellance, is by the Buckpasser Canadian Horse of the Year L’Enjoleur (ex Fanfreluche by Northern Dancer), a half-brother to Grand Luxe, the producer from a mating with Mr. Prospector of Rolls, dam of Danehill Golden Slipper winner and champion Australian sire Flying Spur and grandam of another current champion leading sire, Encosta de Lago.
Encosta de Lago is by the briefly shuttled Fairy King, a brother to the Northern Dancer European super sire Sadler’s Wells. His son Saddlers’ Hall, winner of the Group I Coronation Cup and Group 2 Princess of Wales’s Stakes, and sire of winners of more than 460 races, and six stakes winners including Group I winner Silver Patriarch and Endless Hall.
Courtier is from Queen’s Visit, a half-sister by the Bold Ruler Group I winner Top Command to Khozaam, a good English juvenile by Seattle Slew who is sire of the dam of Scenic stayer Viewed.
Barbajuan was the best in his age group for 2003 by his sire in the northern hemisphere. He showed ability at this age in three different countries. He won three juvenile sprint races in England, including the Group 3 Sandown Solario Stakes, finished third in Italy’s top juvenile event, the Group I Milano Gran Criterium.
Sold to Macau, Barbajuan went on to prove one of that country’s best performers of his time up to 1800m, winning the Group 3 Taipa Winter Trophy, Gold Group Fat Choy Cup and Japan Racing Association Trophy.
Barbajuan stands his first season at a fee of $6600 (inc gst) and stands alongside the proven Hussonet stallion, Byblos (ex Brittany’s Dream).
