Exciting three-year-old Fair Trade continued on his winning way at Shatin on Sunday, the Casper Fownes trained gelding impressing at his first Hong Kong start.
Formerly trained in Melbourne by Michael Kent where he easily won his first two at Flemington – including the C.S Hayes Stakes-Gr.3, the son of Danewin was sold to Hong Kong for a seven figure sum.
Fair Trade was bred at Kerrie by Wingrove Park whose Joe & Daira Vella were delighted with the victory.

“It is a proud moment for Wingrove,” they enthused, “to see a horse we bred and raised prove successful on the world stage is a great thrill.” Also pleased was Wingrove’s bloodstock advisor Kristen Manning who spied Fair Trade’s dam Villa Igea at the 2001 Easter broodmare sale – planning the mating that produced the unbeaten rising star.
“I am so happy that Fair Trade has settled into Hong Kong so quickly – it is no mean feat to win first up in another country. He was having his first start in the clockwise direction and he still does a bit wrong. I am excited about what lies ahead for him!”
As is Casper Fownes who was keen for Fair Trade to have a current season run before being prepared for stronger races later in the year.
“Next season these horses only get a couple of chances before the big races come around, so having him fit enough to win in late June will mean he’ll be forward in condition at the start of next term,” he said.
“Hopefully, that will give us an advantage in trying to get into the bigger races.”
