Russeting became the second daughter of Commands to excel at the highest level this when when she landed the final Group One race of the season the Winter Stakes.
In doing so she gave her trainer, Bart Cummings his 253rd Group One winner, and more importantly she gave her young sire, Commands, his second winner at the highest level this season.
Ridden by Michael Cahill, Russeting settled in a handy position and travelled kindly throughout and when Cahill asked for her final sprint in the 1400m contest she unleashed a devastating burst of speed. Showing plenty of courage she was able to hold off Prima Nova’s late challenge.
Prima Nova (Danehill Dancer - Bonanova by Star Way), trained by Cummings son Anthony, tried hard but couldn’t match strides with Russeting in the final 50m. The Group 2 Moonee Valley Sunline Stakes winner, Subtle Cove (Mull of kintyre - Subtle Miss by Nadeed) was another length away in third.
A $300,000 purchase for her new connections at the recent Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast, Russeting earned $20,000 more than her purchase price for the win which sent her future value soaring. She was knocked down to leading Sydney based bloodstock agent Duncan Ramage on behalf of Bell View Park Stud.
A four-year-old mare Russeting has won nine races, including a previous black type win in the Listed Juanmo Stakes at the same course back in April. She will now be aimed at the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington in spring.
Russeting is out of the winning Bluebird mare, Granny Apple, a three-quarter sister-in-blood to Bialia a Listed winner and a half-brother to the wonderful sprinter Schillaci (by Salieri), the winner of 16 races with eight of those being at Group One level.
Commands other Group One winner this season is Sheikh Mohammed’s Purple, winner of the Storm Queen Stakes and the Queensland Oaks. He is having a wonderful season and the son of Danehill and Cotehele House has now sired four Group 1 winners and he has another six that have been placed at the elite level.
Commands stands at Darley’s Kelvinside Stud this spring at a fee of $55,000 including GST, that’s $10,000 off his fee from last season. Breeders may need to get in early if they wish to utlise him as it won’t take long before he has the ‘book full’ sign posted outside his stable door as Darley may limit the number of mares he is to cover this spring as well.
