Russeting – now in the hands of Bart Cummings – went most of the way to repaying her cost with a win in the
Group I Winter Stakes.
Russeting has improved steadily throughout her career, and gained her first black-type win when taking the Juanmo Stakes in mid-April. She backed up those efforts with thirds in the Silk Stocking and Lady of the Turf Stakes, and then ran fourth in the
Group 3 Dane Ripper Stakes on her group stakes debut.
Russeting’s sire, Commands, is currently enjoying a career year. He sits in sixth on the Leading Sires list, and has been represented by nine 2009-2009 stakes winners, including Purple, winner of the Storm Queen Stakes (G1) and Queensland Oaks (G1); El Cambio, who took the Baguette Stakes (G2); and Court Command, successful in the BTC Sport Stakes (G3).

Commands
By Danehill, Commands is a brother to the standout runner Danewin. Born five-years after his sibling, Commands was not as dominating a runner as Danewin, nor could he stay as far as that horse, who was outstanding at up to 2000m. That said, Commands was a more than effective runner. At two, he won three of his four starts, including the Missile Stakes (G3) over 1100m. The following season, Commands won only one of 11 starts, taking the 1417m. Concept Sports Stakes, but a truer reflection of his talent was his second, beaten a nose to Black Bean, in The Galaxy (G1), with Padstow, Toledo, Guineas, Miss Pennymoney, Easy Rocking, Sports and Paint, among those behind.
Despite begin his stud career four years later than Danewin, Commands has caught his brother in terms of number of stakes winners (the score stands a 24 – 23 in favour of the younger horse), and has already outstripped him in commercial terms (he covered 151 mares at a fee of A$66,000 last year).
Russeting is out of the Bluebird mare, Granny Apple, a winner once, over 900m. Granny Apple is half-sister to the dam of the black-type winning Strategic filly, La Famelia. Granny Apple is also a three-parts-sister to black-type winner Bialia, and her dam Biancaneve (by Salieri), is three-parts-sister to superstar sprinter, Schillaci, who are both out of Biancave’s black-type winning Bletchingly half-sister, Biscarina. The third dam, Forina (by the imported Gold Bridge sire line horse, Vibrant), won the Blue Diamond Stakes, and is half-sister to the dam of the Standish Handicap (G3) scorer Western Voyage.
Russeting is a product of the Danehill/Bluebird cross, a Northern Dancer/Northern Dancer combination that has somewhat outperformed opportunity without setting the world on fire. In addition to Russeting, it has also produced group one winners Metal Bender and The Duke, and group winners Cayambe and Montana Flyer. There are actually some passing pedigree similarities between Danehill and Bluebird – by are by sons of Northern Dancer; both have second dams by Tom Fool, and Danehill’s broodmare sire, His Majesty, has some tie-ups with Princequillo, who is broodmare sire of Sir Gaylord (grandsire of the dam of Bluebird). Of course, Danehill with any other Northern Dancer also gives linebreeding to Northern Dancer’s dam, Natalma.
