Sales News
One of the first drafts any serious buyer inspects at a sale is that presented by Victoria’s Three Bridges Thoroughbreds. Recognised for their commitment to equine excellence, the Liston family boast an outstanding sale record – great types going on to become classy racehorses.
Four Three Bridges weanlings go under the hammer at this week’s Australian Weanling Sale at Newmarket. Lot 181 is a daughter of the outstanding sire of juveniles in Exceed And Excel. A Newmarket Handicap-Gr.1 winning son of the mighty Danehill, he has been represented by an amazing 114 winners (14 stakes winners) in his first two crops.
This BOBS eligible filly is out of the Palace Music mare Light Music whose foals have proven popular in the sale ring and talented on the track. Her best to date is the stakes placed seven times winner Chess Record – and it is worth noting that since the catalogue was printed her son Robson has recorded an easy Sunshine Coast victory.
Light Music is a daughter of the wonderful broodmare Blondie, dam of the Gr.1 winners Librici and Procol Harum and the Gr.2 winners Double Take and Beachside, in turn dam of the Gr.1 winner Cannsea.
Another eye-catching grand daughter of Danehill is lot 188, a BOBS eligible bay filly by the exciting young Golden Slipper-Gr.1 winning stallion Stratum.
Hailing from that handsome sire’s second crop, this filly is out of the young mare Lyric Theatre, a half sister to the Gr.3 winner Burglar of Bamff, the Listed winner Yodelay and the stakes placed Yodells – dam of the dual Gr.1 winner Yippyio and the stakes winners Iglesia and Tyrolean.
Lyric Theatre’s two-year-old Dorothy has shown considerable promise in just a handful of starts – boasting form around some of Brisbane’s best young horses.
Another great type from the Three Bridges draft is lot 301, BOBS eligible daughter of the high class Storm Cat stallion Tale Of The Cat. One of the great shuttle success stories, he has sired 54 stakes winners – boasting an exceptional winners to runners strike rate of just under 73%.
This filly is the second foal produced by the imported Sadler’s Wells mare Angel Heart, a half sister to the champion Celtic Swing – sire of Takeover Target. This is a prolific European family which has also been represented at Gr.1 level by Ragstone, Moon Madness, Sheriff’s Star, Pavillon and Velodrome.
She is one of your last chances to secure a Tale Of The Cat weanling this year – the EI outbreak meaning that he has only 17 foals from that crop.
The sole colt in the Three Bridges draft is lot 389, BOBS eligible son of emerging Danehill stallion Fastnet Rock.
A dual Gr.1 winning sprinter, he has sired eight winners and 14 place getters in his first crop – ten of his youngsters earning early black type.
This colt (who is bred on a 6 X 5 cross of the excellent mare Busanda) is a ¾ brother to the dual city winner Laylia and the promising three-year-old Fivewest – metropolitan placed from just a few debut campaign starts last spring.
Such great types does his dam Julie’s Paige produce that they have been in high demand at the sales – her 2004 Viscount filly fetching $420,000 at the 2006 Easter Sale.
An imported daughter of the Gone West stallion West By West, Julie’s Paige is a half sister to the stakes winner Mr Peregrine and the stakes placed Ginger Lass – grandam of the dual Gr.1 winner Super Quercus.
Broodmare buyers should also check out the Three Bridges draft – two very nice mares on offer. Lot 29 Monchelle by Montjeu is in foal to Dubai Destination whilst lot 100 Evening Jester, a half sister to the US stakes winner Moment’s Best, is in foal to Hard Spun.
