HOT off the success of Dan De Lago in the Group 2 Gold Circle Derby at Clairwood in South Africa last
Saturday, Australian-bred horses are expected to star again at this weekend’s famous Durban July meeting.
Australian-bred horses will compete in each of the four
Group 1 races on the 12-event card at Greyville plus there will be representation in the
Group 2 Golden Vase.
South African buyers are now regular faces at Australian yearling sales and the impact of their purchases on racing in this region has been immediate.

Typhoon Tracy – was a South African Champion in the early 90’s and a host of others have also enjoyed success.
The likes of
Sun Classique (Fuji Kiseki), who later went on to win the
Group 1 Sheema Classic in Dubai, was a
Group 1 winner in South Africa, along with other recent stars like
Our Giant,
Seventh Rock and this season’s G1 winner
Le Drakkar.
“The South African market continues to grow and from a relatively small representation, Australian horses have enjoyed a good deal of success in a relatively small space of time,” Aushorse Marketing Chairman Antony Thompson said.
“It’s great to see such a strong contingent of Australian-bred horses vying for Group 1 prizes on what is South Africa’s most important day of racing.”
Dan De Lago (Encosta De Lago) is the latest feature race winner in South Africa and the tally may well be improved upon this weekend, with a number of leading hopes at Greyville. The aforementioned
Our Giant, a winner of 11 races in 28 starts, including last year’s
G1 Horse Chestnut Stakes, will line up in this Saturday’s
G1 Durban July.
A half-brother to Singapore star
Rocket Man, he won the
G2 Hawaii Stakes earlier this season. Tropical Empire is the second member of the Australian contingent. He is the winner of seven races including an impressive last start two-length victory at Greyville
over 1900m against
Grade 2 company. The Durban meeting also features two
Grade 1 events over 1400m for two-year-olds. In the Golden Slipper, for two-year-old fillies,
General Nediym filly Generous Anna comes off an easy last start win at Clairwood, taking her record to two wins in five outings.
Three Australian-bred runners will contest the other juvenile feature, the Golden Horseshoe. Mike De Kock will saddle up
Redoute’s Choice colts Solid Choice and Musir, which gapped their rivals when running the quinella in the Gatecrasher Stakes at their latest outing.

Exclaim’n’Exclude comes off a last start third in the
G1 Gold Reef Resorts Medallion.
In the final Grade 1 event,
Merlene De Lago steps up to 1600m for the first time. The daughter of 1996 Golden Slipper winner Merlene won her first four races and showed she was on track for this assignment with a last start second in the
G1 South African Fillies Sprint.
