Sales News
The
Deauville August Yearling Sale has been consistently in the spotlight this year courtesy of the
remarkable achievements by its graduates. So far in 2009, they have won
three Classics, which ismore than any other European yearling sale.
LE HAVRE, bought for €100,000, scored in the Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby),
SILVER FROST, a €95,000 purchase, took the Poule d’Essai des Poulains, while
COLLECTION, who fetched €130,000, ran away with the Hong Kong Derby.
Yearlings bought at Deauville have also landed the last three editions of the Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby), as well as the 2008 1000 Guineas courtesy of the brilliant NATAGORA.

Collection
The catalogue for the 2009 renewal, will take place from August 14 to 17, is now online and features 502 yearlings that were selected amongst the elite of the European crop, with some significant additions from America.
An international vendors’ list
59 vendors will be offering yearlings at the August Sale, including a higher than ever proportion of foreign vendors.
Classic and proven sires include CAPE CROSS, DANEHILL DANCER, ELUSIVE CITY, GIANT’S CAUSEWAY, MONSUN, PIVOTAL, VERGLAS: the sires of all 2009 Classic winners so far in Europe feature prominently, while MEDAGLIA D’ORO, sire of Kentucky Oaks and Preakness Stakes heroine RACHEL ALEXANDRA is also represented.
Silver Frost’s sire VERGLAS has the largest battalion with 18 yearlings, the ubiquitous DANEHILL DANCER stands in second with 14, while MONSUN, whose progeny are a rare commodity at public auctions, boasts 10.
Proven sires provide the bulk of the catalogue: 220 yearlings (45% of the catalogue) are by sires who have produced a Gr.1 winner in the last 12 months, such as GALILEO, STORM CAT, DALAKHANI, REDOUTE’S CHOICE, SMART STRIKE, ANABAA, MONTJEU, ENCOSTA DE LAGO, KINGMAMBO etc. The sale will also showcase yearlings from the first crop by exciting newcomers HURRICANE RUN, SHIROCCO, HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR, ARCHANGE D’OR, CACIQUE, ARAAFA, IFFRAAJ etc.
The number of siblings to Group performers in the August catalogue hasn’t stopped rising since ARQANA was created. This year’s figure of 121 represents a new record. Over the first two, most select sessions, the proportion of yearlings whose dam has already produced at least one Group/Grade performer reaches an outstanding 52%1.
These talented relatives include the Gr.1 winners ELECTROCUTIONIST, LE HAVRE, SCHIAPARELLI, SILVER FROST, NAAQOOS, SERIOUS ATTITUDE, ORATORIO, OVERARCHING, LITERATO, DEDICATION, ALEXANDER TANGO, RUMPLESTILTSKIN, KAZZIA, GENTLEWAVE, CLODOVIL, OKAWANO, CORRE CAMINOS, KINNAIRD, SAGAMIX, BRIBON, ASK FOR THE MOON, VAHORIMIX, etc. as well as the recent Group winners CELIMENE, SAN SICHARIA, CALVADOS BLUES et al.
The significance of this record is all the greater as the catalogue also features a significant share of young dams: 30% of the yearlings catalogued are their dam’s first or second foal. Among them are the eagerly expected progeny of such brilliant racemares as ALMERITA (Preis der Diana, Gr.1), AMORAMA (Del Mar Oaks, Gr.1), DEDICATION (Prix de la Forêt, Gr.1), CENTIFOLIA, ALLOWAY, DAMOISELLE etc.
Group winning dams also include Prix Marcel Boussac winner AMONITA, E.P. Taylor Stakes heroine VOLGA, 5 time Gr.1 victrix YOU, PEARLY SHELLS, who scored in the Gr.1 Prix Vermeille, FIELD OF HOPE, who won the Gr.1 Prix de la Forêt and produced the Guineas 3rd OLYMPIAN ODYSSEY etc.
Victories at the highest level for foreign owners racing their horses in France have become quite a common sight over the past few years, a fact that can easily be explained by the appeal of the generous prize money, topped up by substantial owners’ premiums for horses that are born and bred in France or assimilated: an impressive €35.88 million were paid out to owners of eligible horses in 2008. With the average training fee estimated at €18,500 per annum and the winning prize in an “F” (lowest grade) Parisian maiden race standing at €12,000, owners can pretty easily recoup their expenses. In fact, the cost recovery percentage per horse having run is a staggering 56%, compared to 28% and 22% in Ireland and Great Britain respectively2.

The icing on the cake is provided by the owners’ bonus premiums, which significantly boost all prize money (wins & places) earned by eligible horses. The bonuses amount to an extra 75% for juveniles, 63% for three-year-olds and 48% for horses aged four and up of all prize-money earned.
Triple Gr.1 winner VISION D’ETAT is an inspiring example of the financial benefits of racing a horse in France: purchased for €39,000 by provincial trainer Eric Libaud, he has accumulated earnings in excess of €2.3 million, including €723,400 in premiums only.
Another example of excellent bonuses is recent Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club winner Le Havre who was purchased at the Deauville Yearling sale for €100,000. He has earned total prize-money of €1,004,040 plus owner’s premiums of €635,905 to total €1,639,945.
