It’s getting very close to that time of year again, when a humble horse becomes a national hero, and Australia’s world-renowned passion for racing reaches its zenith. It’s the Victorian spring racing carnival

which features 50 days of world-class racing action, headlined by, two cups and a plate! They are the three richest races – the $2.5million BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield on Saturday 17 October, the $3million Tatts WS Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday 24 October, and the $5.6million Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on Tuesday 3 November.
Nominations for these races close at 12 Noon (Australian Eastern Standard Time - sharp) on Tuesday 4 August 2009.
Spring isn’t just about the “big three”.
A total of 15 Group 1 races are run throughout the 50 days of the Carnival, offering prize money of more than $25 million.
International horses competing in Victoria are housed at the privately-owned Sandown Quarantine Facility at Betfair Park, approximately 30 kilometres south-east of the Melbourne CBD.
