Winners galore for Shamardal

SHAMARDAL (USA), who made such a great start to his southern stud career with 12 first crop winners in 2008-09, is doing equally well in Europe with 10 juvenile winners led by recent Group winner Shakespearean. The colt collected the Solario Stakes-Gr.3 (1400m) at Sandown Park on August 22 for trainer Mark Johnson, who also trained Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway (USA)-Helsinki by Machiavellian) at two when he won the first of his four Gr.1 events, the Dewhurst Stakes and also the Vintage Stakes-Gr.2.

Trained for Godolphin by Saeed bin Suroor at three, Shamardal won the French Derby (2100m), French 2000 Guineas (1600m) and the St James’s Palace Stakes (1600m) at the elite level and retired as the winner of six of his seven starts. He was rated World Champion 2YO in 2004 and European Champion 3YO Miler the following season. Shamardal stands at Darley’s Kelvinside at Aberdeen in the Hunter Valley on $27,500 and his stakes-placed dam is a sister to Dubai World Cup-Gr.1 winner and leading sire Street Cry (IRE), their dam being the Irish Oaks-Gr.1 winner Helen Street, by the Petingo classic winner Troy. Inbred 5fx4f to Halo (and with a further cross of his sire Hail to Reason in his five generation pedigree via Roberto), Shamardal is also 5mx5f to Natalma. Danehill carries a 3mx3f cross to this mare whose half-sister Cosmah is the dam of Halo.

Shamardal’s leading southern runners include the stakes placed duo Marquardt (dam by Centaine) and Premardal (dam by Rainbow Quest) while his northern stakes winners are Arctic (dam by Shareef Dancer), unbeaten in two starts at 1000m including the Listed Curragh Stakes and Shakespearean (dam by Priolo). Shamardal’s sire, the former Coolmore shuttler Giant’s Causeway (Storm Cat-Mariah’s Storm by Rahy), won six Gr.1 events including the Eclipse Stakes, St James’s Palace Stakes and Prix de la Salamandre and left the southern Gr.1 winners Juste Momente and Our Giant (in South Africa), while his northern Gr.1 winners include former shuttler and English 2000 Guineas winner Footstepsinthesand (USA), Aragorn, My Typhoon and First Samurai.

Matriarchs : Tobalina

Russeting another gem from Schillaci’s family

THE victory of the Commands mare Russeting in the Winter Stakes-Gr.1 at the recent Tattersalls (Qld) Club carnival in Brisbane, indicated the female line that has sprouted such luminaries as Schillaci and Forina is still producing good winners four generations on from Tobalina, the mare who could be described as the foundation of the family in Australia. The success of Tobalina’s family has been in spite of a number of her descendents being less than prolific breeders, including Tobalina herself. In 13 years at stud Tobalina produced only seven foals, one unnamed. Of the other six, four were fillies, but one never produced a live foal. TOBALINA PEDIGREE (more…)
