ENCOSTA DE LAGO has claimed his second successive Australian General Sires title, and in succession, with winners of $9.9m, to defeat a former title winner Redoute’s Choice, whose runners earned $9.5m, and now-deceased Scenic (IRE) with $9.4m. Encosta de Lago, who stands at Coolmore, Jerry’s Plains, is a son of Fairy King (Northern Dancer-Fairy Bridge by Bold Reason), whose brother Sadler’s Wells is the sire of Scenic, the 14th placed Montjeu (IRE) and 20th-placed Carnegie (IRE) (now in retirement at Darley). Vinery’s Testa Rossa, has finished in eighth on the list with earnings of $5.4m and is by Perugino, a Danzig-sired three-quarter brother to Sadler’s Wells and Fairy King.

Arrowfield-based Redoute’s Choice is one of six Danehill (USA) sons in the top 20, with Darley’s Commands next best on sixth ($6.7m), followed by Coolmore’s Danehill Dancer (IRE) seventh ($6.5m), Danewin, from Emirates Park, Murrurundi in 11th spot with 47 winners from just 91 runners and earnings of, $4.3m and then Arrowfield’s Golden Slipper winners Flying Spur ($4.2m) and Danzero ($4.1m).
Danehill Dancer’s international Gr.1-winning sprinter Choisir, continues to shine for Coolmore being the leading third crop sire and 10th on the general sires list with earnings of $4.8m.
Cambridge Stud’s veteran Zabeel (NZ) (Sir Tristram (IRE)) is fourth by earnings with $7.7m, a position he also occupied in the previous two seasons, while other NZ-based sires in the top 20 were former shuttler Montjeu (IRE) and 16th-placed O’Reilly (NZ) (by Last Tycoon (IRE), Northern Dancer line), the last named, who is based at Waikato Stud, had winners of $3.7m.
Vinery duo, More Than Ready (USA) (Southern Halo), fifth with $7.4m and Red Ransom (USA) (Roberto), ninth with $5.2m represent the Hail to Reason branch of the Turn-to male line (Zabeel represents the Sir Gaylord branch of this line). More Than Ready claimed the title as Leading Sire of Juveniles for the second successive season (22 winners of $4.63m) from the second crop sire Exceed and Excel, a Danehill son who stands at Darley, Aberdeen, whose 19 winners earned $1.74m and General Nediym (14 winners, $1.26m). Next was Encosta de Lago with 12 winners of $1.2m. The Leading First Season Sires was Arrowfield Studs’ Charge Forward (Red Ransom), with seven winners of $1.15m, making him seventh on the general juvenile list.
Mr. Prospectors male line was represented on the general sires top 20 by his son Hussonet (USA), that Arrowfield-based sire being 15th with $3.7m, with three Australian crops at the track and by a grandson, Street Cry (IRE) (by Machiavellian), on $3.7m. Street Cry, a third crop sire in 2008-09, is again shuttling for Darley this season and will be joined by sons Street Boss (USA) and Street Sense (USA) for Darley and Street Hero (USA) for Makybe.
The sole Star Kingdom (IRE)-line sire represented is Glenlogan Park-based Show a Heart (Brave Warrior), with earnings of $3.6m in 18th spot (one better than 2007-08), while now-deceased Widden Stud sire General Nediym (Nediym (IRE)) in 19th with earnings of $3.5m also represents the Northern Dancer line, which dominated the sires list in the 2008-09 season, with 14 of the top 20 sires being from this male line.
Encosta de Lago was also a clear leader by winners with 147 of his 316 runners winning and he was followed by Commands (124/263), Redoute’s Choice (121/239) and Queenslander Sequalo, representing the Forli branch of the Hyperion male line via Rustic Amber (IRE), (115/268) and providing another prolific sire of winners for Lyndhurst Stud. Next came Danehill Dancer (112/251) and deceased Golden Slipper winner and former Yarraman Park sire Catbird (Danehill) also with 112 winners (255 runners), followed by More Than Ready (108/202), General Nediym (104/256), Patinack Farm’s Beautiful Crown (USA) (Chiefs Crown by Danzig) with 101/205 and former Coolmore shuttler Fasliyev (Nureyev) 98/197, rounding out the top 10 leading sires by winners.
