ONE of the most interesting South American-born sons of Hussonet (USA) standing in Australia is Eagle Park Stud’s Gr.1 winner Byblos (CHI).
Not only did he prove himself on the track, winning from 1000m-1900m, Byblos is already the sire of a high percentage of winners from just a handful of runners in Chile, something that is sure to boost the confidence of broodmare owners.
With Arrowfield’s Hussonet (Mr. Prospector-Sacahuista by Raja Baba) already an outstanding sire in Chile (24 Gr.1 winners) and Australia, his southern runners include Weekend Hussler, Reaan and Rios, Byblos, who covered 102 mares in his first Australian season in 2008, could easily follow suit. Byblos stands at $11,000 in 2009.

Byblos

He is inbred 3mx4f,3f to speed influence Raise a Native and his stakes winning dam Brittany’s Dream is by Worldwatch (Nijinsky), an outstanding broodmare sire in South America and inbred 3×3 to the half-sisters Natalma (dam of Northern Dancer) and Cosmah (dam of Halo). This makes Byblos particularly appealing to mares by the likes of Danehill (USA) and El Moxie (USA) – also descendants of Natalma. He should also suit mares carrying Halo, perhaps via sires such as More Than Ready (USA), Sunday Silence or Don’t Say Halo (USA).
Peter Ward’s showplace Eagle Park Stud at Springside near Orange is also the home of tough sprinter Barbajuan (IRE) (Danehill Dancer (IRE)-Courtier by Saddler’s Hall), who won 10 races including the Solario Stakes-Gr.3 (1400m) at Sandown at two (where he beat Gr.1 winner Milk it Mick). Earning a Timeform of 109 at two, Barbajuan started his season winning his first two starts at 1000m and 1200m and was also third in the Gran Criterium-Gr.1 (1600m) in Milan and fourth in the National Stakes-Gr.1 (1400m) at the Curragh. He continued his career in Macau and Hong Kong and his wins there included the Winter Trophy-Gr.3 at Taipa.
His unraced dam is by Coronation Cup-Gr.1 winner Saddler’s Hall (Saddler’s Wells) and his third dam Par Excellence (l’Enjoleur) was Champion 2YO Filly in Canada and her descendants include Arrowfield’s boom young sire Charge Forward (Red Ransom (USA)). Barbajuan’s first season fee is $6600.
