The opening session for Ireland’s Goffs Orby has the sale off on a positive note with a filly by Giant’s Causeway from the Group I Irish 1000 Guineas winner Saoire being knocked down for €475,000 (AU$794,200).
Consigned by Cahermorris Stables the filly went to the bid of Hugo Merry on behalf of Dr Jim Hay following a bidding battle with BBA Ireland and John Magnier. She will to go into training with Tom Tate. Tate later signed for Tinnakill House’s Motivator colt (Lot 96) out of a half sister to Arc winner Suave Dancer for €230,000 (AU$384,560).
The next highest priced yearling on day one was paid for a colt by Montjeu from the famous Kilcarn Stud Salsabil family. Out of Welsh Love, Lot 113 he is a half brother to Group 1 Grand Criterium winner Second Empire and was purchased by Coolmore’s John Magnier for €420,000 (AU$702,240).
This was followed shortly by a six figure Staffordstown offering, a daughter of Sadlers Wells (Lot 128) from the close family of the 2007 sales topping €2.4 million filly out of Albanova, who was bought by Richard Frisby Bloodstock for €300,000.
HH Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum made his presence felt in the ring with five purchases that included two Medicean colts, Lot 87 from Yeomanstown Stud for €270,000 and Croom House Stud’s Lot 103 for €250,000. John Ferguson was another who was very active on the first day of the sale with nine purchases that featured an athletic son of Oasis Dream from Triermore Stud (Lot 56) for €260,000 and Airlie Stud’s Invincible Spirit filly (Lot 55).
BBA Ireland are always among the top buyers at Goffs yearling sales and this sale is no different with the highlight of 11 purchases a Danehill Dancer half-sister to Skiddaw Peak (by Generous), a dual Listed winner Australia. Consigned by Ashtown House Stud, the filly was knocked down to Adrian Nicoll for €235,000.
Among the large and diverse group of buyers present at Goffs was American agent Buzz Chace who was buying for the first time at a European Yearling Sale. Together with Terry Finley of West Point Thoroughbreds, Chace purchased Camas Park’s Holy Roman Emperor colt (Lot 86) for €140,000 and a son of Ad Valorem (Lot 2) from Ashtown House Stud for €50,000. The plan is for both yearlings to go to California.
