Shamardal
The second day of selling in France at Arqana’s October yearling sale confirmed the positive signals from the first day of trade when €170,000 was paid by BBA Ireland for a colt by Darley’s young stallion, Shamardal.
Arqana’s average price closed out at €27,000, up 5% from the same session a year ago, while the median improved by 12% to reach €18,000, which means that half of the yearlings sold fetched that price or more.
The aggregate for the day was slightly down, at €3,550,000 against €3,814,500 in 2008 (including private sales); it is only down due to a lower number of horses catalogued. The clearance rate of 70% was pleasing and a marginal decrease on last years.
The second days highlights were:-
• Lot 209, a colt from the second crop of Shamardal and a half-brother to the group winners Obrigado and Coupe de Champe for €170,000. He was consigned by Haras de Grandcamp, the farm that topped the vendors’ standings at this sale in 2008.
• Lot 188, a Medicean filly out of the Group-placed Anna Mona offered from Haras de Saint-Pair was knocked down for €160,000 to Sylvain Vidal acting on behalf of Gérard Augustin-Normand. She hails from a solid German family that lifted the recent Prix d’Aumale victrix Middle Club.
• Lot 258, the only Galileo yearling in the catalogue, appealed to Anthony Stroud, who forked out €130,000 for this colt from Haras du Mézeray. He is the first foal out of Danse Spectre, herself a daughter of the smart Danse Royale, who won the Gr.3 Prix de Psyché Gr.3 and ran 3rd in the Irish 1000 Guineas.
• Lot 213, a colt from Shirocco’s first crop, was snapped up by BBA Ireland for €85,000. This colt consigned by Haras d’Etreham is out of the multiple Listed-winner Basse Besogne, who has already produced a black-type horse in the USA.
• Lot 263, a daughter of Hurricane Run from Haras des Monceaux, a stud that is offering its first yearlings this season, was purchased by Anthony Stroud for €85,000.
