An unscheduled pre-race preliminary wasn’t enough to stop Definitely Ready from extending his unbeaten run to three in the Rokk Ebony Cup (1000m) at Caulfield on Wednesday.
The stakes winning filly Noesis ‘lost the plot’ in the barriers beforehand and she burrowed through her gate, which in turn sprung open the gate of Definitely Ready.
Michael Rodd on Definitely Ready had trouble pulling him up immediately so he allowed him to ‘pacework’ around the course and upon returning to the barriers, Definitely Ready was passed fit to race.
Punters may have been worried as he was the short priced favourite.  But as it turned out they should not have worried. Definitely Ready had just had a “warm up” according to connections.
“That warmed him up,” Kavanagh quipped. “It’s a cold day.”
“He’s jumped the best he’s ever jumped. We was able to get straight into his gait,” he added.
Definitely Ready is a unique speedster. His incredible mid race sectionals break the hearts of his rivals and in all his starts to date he’s kept humming right to the post.
“He really seems to roll into it,” Kavanagh pointed out. “Michael said it’s quite amazing to ride him - you don’t think you’re going that fast.”
Kavanagh said a start down the famous straight course at his home track would be next on the cards.
“There’s a set weights and penalties (race) on Melbourne Cup Day over 1000 metres down the straight. He’ll get in on the minimum in that so that’s where he’ll go.”
A $140,000 purchase for Kavanagh at the 2008 Magic Millions Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast, Definitely Ready made a barnstorming start to his career in Adelaide in mid-August when he demoralised his rivals at Morphettville.
Immediately sent to Melbourne he ventured to Sandown and smashed the 1000 metre track record at his second start.
On that occasion the son of More Than Ready stopped the clock in a remarkable 55.07 seconds - at one stage of that race he ran a 200 metre sectional in under 10 seconds.
On Wednesday, the gelding turned in another outstanding effort to cruise to the line and win by a widening three-and-a-half lengths.
The time of 57.23 seconds was less than a second outside the class record.
Definitely Ready is another Kavanagh stable star who hails from South Australia’s famed Mill Park Stud.
Other Mill Park graduates to reach racing’s elite level with Kavanagh include Divine Madonna, Devil Moon and Undoubtedly.
By More Than Ready, the sire of the past two winners of Australia’s top two juvenile races, the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and Golden Slipper, Definitely Ready is from Defiant.
A daughter of Danehill, Defiant was a city winner and was fourth in the listed Queen Adelaide Stakes prior to being retired to stud.
Being from the Group One Newmarket Handicap winner Ruffles, Defiant is a full sister to the stakes performed sprinter Formal Attire (Danehill) and a half sister to the triple stakes race runner-up Rough Chance.
