The ability and potential of Face Value filly Silent Surround was heard loud and clear after the running of the Group Two Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday.
The Group Three winner reeled off some of the fastest sectionals of the day to come from last to grab third in what was an eye catching lead up to the VRC Oaks. Covering her last 400m in 22.86 seconds Silent Surround may now head to the Thousand Guineas on the advice of jockey Damien Oliver.
“Damien was glowing in his assessment and suggested we go to the Thousand Guineas on the way to the VRC Oaks. We felt that she was on track after her first two starts in Melbourne this prep but it what nice to see it unfold on Saturday,” said Nick Smart, son of trainer Bill Smart.
Silent Surround has stamped herself as one of the “horses to follow’ this spring and has firmed into second favourite ($8) behind Irish Lights (Fastnet Rock) in the VRC Oaks markets.
Offered by Lindsay Park Stud at the 2008 Adelaide Magic Millions sale, Silent Surround was purchased for $36,000 by Mark Minervini before making her way to Bill Smart’s stables.
Out of Rory’s Jester mare Biography whom is a half-sister to Group Two winner and Group One placed Station Hand, Silent Surround hails from the first crop of Lindsay Park Stud stallion Face Value (Red Ransom ex Freckled Face by Polish Patriot).
Having finished in the top ten first season sires with a crop of 68 live foals, the Caulfield Guineas runner up went on to cover over 108 mares in his third season on the back of a positive response to his first crop of foals.
Standing for only $6,600 (inc. GST) Face Value represents great value for breeders looking for a stallion with plenty of upside over the ensuing month.
