It was appropriate that in the week following the momentous victory of Sea the Stars in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe that his half-brother, the champion stallion Galileo would be represented by the session topping lot on the opening day of Europe’s premier yearling sale, the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1.

The opening day saw strong trade with 151 lots sold for 16,840,000 guineas, at an average of 111,523 guineas and a median of 80,000 guineas, figures that compared favourably with last year’s opening session.

Denis Brosnan’s Croom House Stud consigned lot 118, the bay colt by Galileo out of the Darshaan mare Tadkiyra whose progeny include the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes winner Damson and the Group winning filly Geminiani. Interest in the well related colt came initially from bloodstock agents Richard Brown and Charlie Gordon-Watson, as well as from Crispin de Moubray, but the trio were soon overtaken by Sir Robert Ogden, standing alongside John Warren and John Magnier, with the latter triumphant at 550,000 guineas. It was a successful day for the Limerick nursery, having also consigned the 220,000 guineas Dansili colt out of Tyranny who was also purchased by the Coolmore supremo.

Lot 121, the Medicean colt out of the Daylami mare Tariysha was the beneficiary of a significant pedigree update when his half-brother Arcano won the Group 1 Prix Morny in Deauville shortly after the release of the catalogue, heading to the top of 2000 Guineas antepost betting charts in the process. Consigned from James Egan’s Corduff Stud, who also consigned Arcano to the sale last year, the bay colt was knocked down to Shadwell Estates’ Angus Gold for 450,000 guineas after he saw off the efforts of BBA Ireland’s Eamonn Reilly.

Another of the highlights from the first day of Book 1 was the half-sister to this year’s Irish 2000 Guineas winner Mastercraftsman. She was by Coolmore’s young stallion Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill - L’On Vite by Secretariat). Consigned by Ashtown House Stud, the filly out of Stralight Dreams (by Black Tie Affair) was knocked down to prominent owner John Magnier.

Newmarket trainer Jeremy Noseda secured the well bred filly by Sadler’s Wells out of the Listed placed Shastye (by Danehill) for 350,000 guineas. Consigned from the Jacobs Family’s Newsells Park Stud, the bay filly is a grand daughter of the Champion Italian mare Saganeca, dam of the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Sagamix and the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner Sagacity. Noseda secured the filly after withstanding the efforts of French agent Crispin de Moubray and indicated that she was purchased for an existing client.

Day two of the Tattersalls October yearling sale of Book 1 continues at 10.30am (NT), Wednesday, October 7.
