Gold Trail’s consistent recent form was rewarded with a strong win in the Group Two The Shorts (1100m) at Randwick on super Saturday.
A quality sprinter by Hussonet, Gold Trail was aided by a clever ride from Nash Rawiller as he led home a Magic Millions quinella result in the day’s sprint.
Rawiller sent his charge out towards the outside fence on straightening as he searched for better going as the track had deteriorated during the day due to the heavy rain that pounded the Eastern suburbs course. The move proved a masterstroke!
Winning trainer Gary Portelli was particularly pleased with the heady ride from Rawiller, who earlier in the day won the Group One Flight Stakes aboard glamour filly More Joyous.
“That was a brilliant ride. He summed it up. And he found the dry line up against the outside fence.”
“We just left it up to Nash,”
Portelli noted.
“I was really worried when the rain came - whether he would handle the track or not.”
Portelli was just thankful he could join the likes of Gai Waterhouse, Michael Moroney, Chris Waller and Lee Freedman as a winner on Randwick’s premier day.
“I love Randwick and this is what it is all about - winning a big race on a day like this,” Portelli summed up.
Gold Trail was purchased as a yearling for $75,000 from the draft of Furlong Stud at the 2007 Magic Millions Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast.
Since then he has won six races and earned over $448,000 after just his 22nd career outing.
Gold Trail, by top Mr. Prospector stallion Hussonet, is from the former stakes winning and top producing mare Trail of Gold.
By Danewin, Trail of Gold won four races including the Jakes HB Carr Stakes at Randwick prior to being retired to Furlong Stud.
She has been represented by three winners from as many runners including last season’s Sydney juvenile winner Prerequisite.
Trail of Gold’s latest yearling, a filly full sister to Gold Trail, is set to turn heads when she is presented in January’s at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast.
No doubt she will be one of many quality yearlings on offer to buyers from Furlong Stud heading to the country’s popular thoroughbred sale in 2010.
