Next year’s Newmarket Handicap is the long term goal for Eagle Falls after his win in the Group Two $302,000 Salinger Linlithgow Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.
Eagle Falls is the best sprinter in the Lindsay Park stables of David Hayes and on Saturday he showed why.
After bursting clear on the inside fence, Eagle Falls found enough under Damien Oliver to hold out Turffontein, who was making ground on the outside fence.
“It’s fantastic,” Hayes commented. “He was a long way in front on the inside and on the line he got there, so it’s all good.”
“He was left in front a long way from home - but he showed a lot of guts - it was a really strong win.”
“And they ran some time,” he added referring to the slick 1 minute 8.9 seconds they covered the 1200 metres in.
Hayes has no doubts that Eagle Falls can take the next step to Group One level and that opportunity will probably come early next year.
“He is a genuine top grade sprinter and I think he’s just showed that he has a group one (win) in him.”
Hayes is not sure whether Eagle Falls will have another run this spring or head for a break.
“We’ll take a deep breath,” he noted. “We’ve got him entered in the Emirates, but I really think he’s a Newmarket horse.”
“I think he’s a top line sprinter,” Hayes summed up. “I’m confident he will be able to show that next year.”
Eagle Falls gave his supporters plenty to cheer about when he got to the post three parts of a length clear of recent Group One winner Turffontein (Johannesburg - Spirit of Grace by Dr. Grace).
Consistent mare Absolutelyfabulous (Langfuhr - Joker’s Girl by Rory’s Jester), a last start group winner, was third home, another three quarters back.
Eagle Falls is a gelded son of Hussonet and was purchased for $170,000 from the 2005 Magic Millions Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast.
With six wins from just 11 starts he’s earned his connections an ever growing $407,183.
He is the first winner for his dam - the Sydney winning Desert King mare Desina.
Successful at 1100 metres, Desina is from the triple stakes winning Prego mare Presina.
This is the family of Australian stars Seto Flowerian, Brindabella, Lawson’s Storm, The Golden Dane and Peacemaker and international stakes winners Tiger Cafe, Dan De Lago and Fusaichi Junk.
