Newmarket, UK (November 27, 2009) - The second day’s selling at Tattersalls sprung into action overnight with Darley’s young stallion Teofilo (Galileo - Speirbhean by Danehill) who was represented by two lots that sold for 100,000 guineas plus, headlining proceedings.
Turnover of 4,709,800 guineas was up 39% on the corresponding day in 2008 for the 174 lots sold, with the average and median rising 22% and 54% respectively to 27,068 guineas and 20,000 guineas.
Teofilo was named the Champion 2yo in Europe in 2006 following his victories in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes and Group 1 National Stakes before injury curtailed his racing career and he was retired to stand at Sheikh Mohammed’s Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket and the Kelvinside property in Australia at Aberdeen. His first northern hemisphere crop of foals have been well received, none more so than the colt and filly who filled the top two spots in the results table at the end of the second day of selling.

Teofilo - Triton Dance colt
Lot 746, the colt by Teofilo out of the Hector Protector mare Triton Dance led the way, being knocked down to Blandford Bloodstock’s Richard Brown for 165,000 guineas after he saw off Anthony Stroud Bloodstock’s Matt Coleman. Trickledown Stud consigned the half-brother to the Group placed Count John out of the half-sister to the Group 2 Cherry Hinton Stakes winner Jewel in the Sand and he was purchased by Brown on behalf of an existing client.
The top priced filly was lot 738, the daughter of Teofilo out of the Listed winning Common Grounds mare Anbella who was knocked down to Shadwell Estates’ Angus Gold for 150,000 guineas. The filly was consigned to the sale by Bob and Jeanette McCreery’s Stowell Hill Stud on behalf of owner/breeder and former publisher Simon Tindall. Anbella is catalogued to sell as lot 1579 on Tuesday at next week’s Tattersalls December Mare Sale where her half-sister, the Group 1 Prix de l’Opera winner Satwa Queen, sold for 3,400,000 guineas in 2007. She is offered in foal to Sea the Stars’ sire Cape Cross.

Authorized - Scarlet Empire colt
Blandford Bloodstock’s Richard Brown also signed for the next highest price for the day when lot 756, a grey colt by Darley’s Authorized (Montjeu - Funsie by Saumarez) out of the Red Ransom mare Scarlet Empire, was knocked down to him. Scarlet Empire is a half-sister to the Group 3 Round Tower Stakes winner Arctic who looks set to be aimed at the Irish 2000 Guineas in 2010. Brown secured the colt on behalf of James Egan’s Corduff Stud after he saw off Irish agent Hugo Merry and indicated that he would be re-offered as a yearling next year. The colt is from the first crop of Authorized who gave Frankie Dettori his maiden win in the Derby when winning the Epsom Classic by an emphatic five lengths. He, like Teofilo, stands at Dalham Hall Stud in England and Darley’s Kelvinside property in Australia at Aberdeen.
