Melbourne, Vic (November 29, 2009) - Marking Time staked his claim for the $2 million BMW Magic Millions 2YO Classic with a brilliant win in the Hamilton Hotel Handicap (1000m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
In confirming his place for Queensland’s richest race, Marking Time also upset the plans of sending Slice and Dice to Sydney - that galloper started at $1.50 and beat only one runner home.
Winning trainer Alan Bailey was surprised his runner was not closer in the betting after a brilliant win at his previous start at the Gold Coast.
“I was a bit surprised he wasn’t rated more strongly,” Bailey told AAP.
“Glen rode him in his first start at Doomben when he ran fourth and thought he was going to win 200 metres out but he knocked up.”
“I thought he had some hope today after he won well last start at the Gold Coast.”
Bailey said Marking Time would most likely have one more run before the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on January 9.
Raced by the Blue Horizon Syndicate, Marking Time was purchased by Bailey for $52,000 from the draft of Superior Thoroughbreds at this year’s Magic Millions QTIS 600 Yearling Sale.
He is one of two winners, from two to race, for the unraced, but top producing Piccolo mare Legal Tune.
Her other runner, the Brave Hawk gelding Chief Red Feather, was a star in North Queensland at two - winning the region’s feature race for juveniles, the Great Northern Plate.
To date Chief Red Feather has five wins on his record and he’s earned his connections over $110,000.
Legal Tune’s latest yearling, a full sister to Marking Time, is set to go under the hammer at March’s 2010 Magic Millions QTIS 600 Yearling Sale.
The are both by Red Ransom stallion Markane (ex Kew Gardens by Kenmare) - a stakes placed two-year-old in Melbourne - who’s already the sire of 26 winners around the country.
