Laguna, NSW (December 29, 2009) - DEBUT runner Backgammon came up trumps at Flemington on Saturday (December 19th) by becoming the first winner for his Darley-owned sire Domesday.
Making every post a winner, the Peter Snowdon-trained two-year-old gelding was most impressive and had two lengths to spare from Josimar (Invincible Spirit) on the line in the Beachside Handicap (1200m in 1:11.68) with Tricarico (General Nediym) third.
Domesday (Red Ransom-In The Past by Zafonic) is yet another talented performer from the Best in Show clan (she is his fourth dam) and won the Silver Slipper Stakes-Gr.2 (1100m) at Rosehill and an 1100m event at Caulfield as a juvenile when he was also second in the Todman Slipper Trial-Gr.2 and fifth in the Golden Slipper-Gr.1.

Now standing at Darley’s Twin Hills property at Cootamundra (fee $5500) alongside Musket (Redoute’s Choice - Tugela by Riverman) and Quest for Fame (Rainbow Quest - Aryenne by Green Dancer), Domesday has had just five first crop runners for a winner and two placegetters - Divorces (Family Breakup by Octagonal) and On Her Day (Victory Crown by Rory’s Jester) being placed. Backgammon is the second winner from the Grand Lodge mare Varied after Variegated (Quest For Fame). A winner herself over 1400m in Brisbane, Varied is one of eight winners from Versatile (Archregent-Tromper by Lunchtime) and they include the Gr.3 winner Youth (by Quest For Fame), stakes placed Veteran (by Canny Lad) and Tuileries (by Grand Lodge). Third dam Tromper produced six winners including Gr.1 winner and sire Over (by Dr Grace) and stakes winner Riona (by Strategic).
Domesday has seven yearlings catalogued for the Inglis Classic Sale at Newmarket, Randwick on January 24-25 and a lone colt at the companies Melbourne Premier sale (March 1st-4th).
At the Classic sale the yearlings are are; Lot 93, a brown colt from Happy Camper (Grand Lodge), bred on the same cross as Backgammon and being offered by Huntworth Stud; Lot 105, a bay colt from Interdict (Quest For Fame), whose second dam, the Listed winner Destruct is a half-sister to Strategic (on account of Kara-JA, Tamworth); Lot 133, a bay colt from Legal Union (Redoute’s Choice), who carries a double cross of Best in Show (Bowness Stud, as agent); Lot 219, a bay filly from Parody (Star Watch), a half-sister to five winners (Goodwood Farm, as agent); Lot 348, a brown colt from Triple Salchow (Citidancer), his dam is a winner and has produced three winners, third dam Blazing Spirit (Huntworth Stud), Lot 407, a bay colt from Alice’s Magic (Al Jaasi), from the family of Gr.1 winner Al Mansour (Carramar Park as agent for M. M. Muir and C.H. Frost) and Lot 424, a brown colt from Ascension (Grand Lodge), also bred on the same cross as Backgammon and brom a city-winning daughter of SW Aspirations (Redbank North, Harden, as agent). In Melbourne at the Premier sale lot 247 is the lone black colt by Domesday. Out of the wining mare Majestic (by Twig Moss) a half-sister to the Group 2 winner Sashed the dam of triple Group I winner Freemason. Majestic has had 14 foals, 12 have raced and 11 are winners.
