It is full steam ahead to the
Group I Blue Diamond Stakes with
Beneteau after his strong win in the $125,000
Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude at Caulfield on
Saturday.
A son of the 1999 Blue Diamond hero Redoute’s Choice, Beneteau moved a step closer to recouping his $1 million purchase with his first stakes success taking his career earnings past $100,000.
Owned by a syndicate that includes Arrowfield Stud and Blue Sky Thoroughbreds Queensland, with the latter also selecting him out of the 2009 William Inglis Easter yearling sale, the brown colt was offered as part of the Arrowfield Stud draft.
The stud is also the sponsor of Victoria’s forthcoming Group I juvenile feature.
Beneteau winning the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude
In recording 1:02.45, Beneteau took 0.22seconds off the class record set 35 minutes earlier by Psychologist (Choisir – Miss Conception by Danzero) in the Fillies Prelude and in doing so brought a smile to the face of trainer Paul Messara.
Messara is the son of Arrowfield’s Principal, John, and has only been training for four years, so he was extremely proud as the colt also raced in the famous Arrowfield colours of Gold with Black Diamonds.
The win of Psychologist and Beneteau in the Blue Diamond Preludes, along with the victories of Innocent Gamble (Elvstroem)and Crystal Lilly (Stratum) in the Blue Diamond Preview events, and Star Witness (Starcraft) in the VRC Talindert sets up an intriguing final at Caulfield on February 20th.
Messara spoke to TVN’s Bruce Clark saying, “It was a fantastic run and I’m really excited to see him do it.”
Beneteau was the punters’ elect last Saturday with apprentice rider Daniel Ganderton in the saddle, and he settled off the speed, before taking a run near the rail to draw clear over the final furlong to score by 2-1/2 lengths over the Listed Maribyrnong Plate winner, General Truce (Brief Truce – General Resolve by General Nediym).
Debutant Thegreatandgood (Rock of Gibraltar – Skating by At Talaq), a full brother to Murtajil, finished the race off well to pick up a black type placing when third.
Beneteau is out of the stakes performed Slice of Paradise (by Encosta de Lago) a full sister to Blue Diamond heroine, Alinghi.
Last Thursday night, in Dubai, another son of Redoute’s Choice, Musir, started his Dubai campaign on the right note when taking out the UAE Guineas Trial at Meydan for leading trainer Mike de Kock.
Musir, a winner of the Group I Golden Horseshoe at Durban in South Africa, is also out of a daughter of Encosta de Lago, Dizzy de Lago, runner-up in the Listed Dequetteville Stakes in Adelaide.
Musir carried the top weight of 62kg in defeating the Godolphin entry Frozen Power (by Oasis Dream) and has an overall record of three wins and a second from four starts.
Bred in Australia, Musir was offered at the 2008 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale by Coolmore as agent. However, he was passed in when he didn’t reach his $1million reserve.
All this is good news for vendors of the three yearlings by Redoute’s Choice at the 2010 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale at Oaklands Junction next month, (March 1st-4th), and the 47 yearlings at the Australian Easter Yearling Sale at Newmarket in New South Wales (April 6th – 8th) - that sale also featuring a lone brown filly, lot 37, that is bred on the same cross as these two stakes winning colts.
At last week’s Karaka Premier Sale, Redoute’s Choice ended the sale as the leading sire by average (NZ$454,286) with the sale’s second highest priced yearling – a colt out of Grand Echezeaux (consigned by Pencarrow Stud) purchased by David Ellis for NZ$1.3million. This sale followed on from the Magic Millions sale topping price of $925,000 for the colt out of They Say (consigned by Strawberry Hill Stud) at the Gold Coast in January.
