Melbourne, Vic (Feb 6th, 2010) -
Lonhro’s superb
Group 1-winning son
Denman took another step towards the Australian Guineas today when recording an emphatic victory in the
Listed Wellington RC Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.
Looking a litte fitter after his Listed Zeditave Stakes victory on Australia Day, Denman was turned out in magnificent order by Peter Snowden for his second-up run. Jumping well from the widest barrier the near black colt easily find the front under Kerrin McEvoy.
Relaxing well under McEvoy they controlled the $100,000 event and as they passed the 1000m marker race caller Greg Miles said “this will be a procession”.
And what a procession it was.
Turning for home McEvoy allowed the son of Lonhro to roll away from the rail and once balanced he clicked him up a gear and Denman strolled away from his rivals for an easy as you like 3-1/4 length victory.
Multiple stakeswinner and Caulfield Guineas runner-up Carrara (Elvstroem - Crystal Sprite by Hurricane Sky) took second while Most Immediate (Red Ransom - So Keen by Jade Hunter) was able to grab third prizemoney.
Trained for Sheikh Mohammed by Peter Snowden, the three-year-old chalked up win number eight at just his 10th career start and took his earnings to $1.08million.
When questioned after the race, Snowden said, “It was really good to see him relax terrific. He was in his own comfort zone and when they presented the race to him like that, there was no way they were going to beat him.”
“He beat some smart horses today but the bar keeps going higher and higher now. The others have to worry about their own and I have to worry about my bloke.”
Denman will continue towards the Group 1 Australian Guineas on March 6 at Flemington, and Snowden indicated that he would have to give the colt another run in two weeks’ time in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes.
Out of the Vain mare Peach, Denman was bred by Woodlands Stud and is a half-brother to Group 1 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Preserve (Canny Lad) and the dual Listed winner Rio Osa (Canny Lad). This is also the family of the VRC Victoria Derby and WS Cox Plate winner Taj Rossi (by Matrice) and the Golden Slipper winner, Dark Eclipse (by Baguette). Peach has a yearling full brother to Denman and is also back in foal to Lonhro.
Currently the leading third-season sire by both earnings and number of winners, Lonhro is the only stallion of his crop in the top ten on the general sires’ table.
