Melbourne, Vic (Feb 26th, 2010) - The Melbourne Premier Sale has developed a reputation for producing high class racehorses with graduates like Sacred Kingdom, Starspangledbanner, Weekend Hussler, Reward for Effort, Turffontein, Shamoline Warrior, Set for Fame, Hissing Sid and Black Caviar and in 2010 the sale will once again provide buyers with opportunity and choice.
With 99 stallions represented, buyers have every reason to be happy with the scope and choice of the 724 yearlings catalogued for auction at the Oaklands Sale Complex from March 1-4. Four of Victoria’s best known breeders, Cathy Hains, Lee Fleming, Adam Sangster and Tony Santic have supported the sale with quality stock and many buyers will have tough decisions to make as they begin to create short lists before selling starts on Monday at 11am.
Each draft has yearlings with depth on the pedigree page, excellent conformation and they will be presented in the best possible light.
Every member of this quartet of breeders strives for excellence and has implemented sustainable farming practices with their yearlings grazing on quality pasture as well as receiving supplementary feed. Each of these vendors has a proven track-record with yearlings, obtaining a good return for their clients and better still, many of those yearlings have graduated into highly successful racehorses for their buyers.
So what can buyers expect from these four studs?
Between them, they will offer 86 yearlings and after recently inspecting their drafts, I’ve chosen a few for my “wish list”.
From Eliza Park, Lot 189, a bay colt by Blue Gum Farms young stallion Churchill Downs from the stakes placed mare Java Siang, by Eliza Park’s recently retired Desert Sun and from a stakes placed daughter of Sir Tristram. The other yearling I have chosen from this draft is Lot 406, a bay or brown colt by Reset from the stakes winning mare Showery (by Aliocha), who has already produced a stakes winner in Highclere. Both colts are well grown and have plenty of scope.

Lot 189, a bay colt by Churchill Downs from Java Siang (by Desert Sun)
From Swettenham Stud, Lot 548, a bay colt by Fastnet Rock from Artful Whisper. He is a cracker and although his dam is not a winner, the family (that of Storm Bird) has plenty of black-type if he makes it on the track for a stallion career later on. Lot 234, by Danewin from Luanada Star (by Danzig), a half-sister to the stakes winners Lolita Star and Berezny, she is cast in the mould of her sire.
Cathy Hains sells under the banner of Burnewang North and she will offer one of the quality fillies in the sale, Lot 213, by Flying Spur out of Lake Susannah, a Listed winner from the family of English 2000 Guineas winner Mystiko. Along with Lot 256, a bay colt, by Choisir from Merayaat (by Viscount), well proportioned and from the family of Universal Prince and Universal Queen.
Tony Santic will offer 12 yearlings under his Makybe banner and another 19 as agent. Amongst his draft is, Lot 314, a bay colt by God’s Own from Our Sistine (Peintre Celebre) and he’s built like a Blue Diamond contender in 2011. His dam is a half-sister to Group 1 winner and sire King’s Chapel. While Lot 419 is a bay by Encosta de Lago from Group 3 winner Smytzer’s Trish (by Geiger Counter) is another high quality filly and a half-sister to Listed winner Swish Trish.
Woodside Park, Bombora Downs, Erinvale, Phoenix and Blue Gum Farm (who will be offering 24 yearlings by first season stallion Churchill Downs) will ably support these studs. Some of the biggest studs from other states are also sending drafts to Melbourne including Arrowfield, Coolmore, Vinery, Invermien, Kia Ora, Mill Park, Toolooganvale, Shipton Lodge, Trevannah and Widden Stud.
So, the Melbourne Premier is a must attend if you are in the market for a racehorse.
