Muswellbrook, NSW (Feb 11th, 2010)  TWO metropolitan winners on Saturday were credited with sizzling final 600ms of less than 33s. They were Typhoon Tracy, the mare who forged to the front in the straight and ran home in 32.86 when taking the Orr Stakes at Caulfield, and Monashee Dancer, front running winner of a 1020m event at Doomben in 57.63 and a last 32.96. The effort of the 5-year-old Darren Bell (Deagon) trained Monashee Mountain grey rig Monashee Dancer took his19 start score to seven wins and four seconds. Earlier speed displays have included 1010m in 57.35 and 57.92 (Doomben), 1000m in 56.92 (Eagle Farm) and 900m in 51.31 (Gold Coast).
Bred and part owned by L. Chan, NSW, Monashee Dancer is a brother to Sir Monashee, a winner of six races, including four over 1000m at Eagle Farm, and the Gold Coast Magic Millions Sprint (1000m in 56.29).
Their speed appears to be sourced through their imported sire Monashee Mountain, one now in his second year as a resident at the progressive Racetree Stud in the Innisplain valley in Queensland after initially shuttling to Willowbend at nearby Beaudesert.
Monashee Mountain has an immediate pedigree combining two world breed shapers who themselves were spectacularly fast. He is by Danzig, a porsche motored winner of all three starts, and from Prospectors Delight, a dual Group 1 winner and Broodmare of the Year by Mr. Prospector, a champion American sprinter and setter of a track record for six furlongs (1200m).
Monashee Mountain is a half-brother to three A.P. Indy American stakes winners, including Mineshaft (North American Horse of the Year 2003, a year he won seven of nine outings including four Group1’s) and Tomisue’s Delight (three Group 1 wins, second American Oaks, Kentucky Oaks).
The Queensland sire did not reach these heights himself, but showed plenty of ability in his brief seven start career, winning stakes events in Ireland in each of his first four outings. A million dollar American yearling buy for the Coolmore juggernaut, he was described by his trainer Aidan O’Brien after winning his two runs at two as ‘a lovely horse, with a good turn of foot’ and as ‘He is big time.’ Unfortunately muscle problems saw his racing career ended early at three.
As he did not win at Group1 level, Monashee Mountain did not get major support when retired to stud as a sire in Ireland, but to date from his use in both hemispheres he has had just on 300 winners, including successes in16 countries, of 830 races and $17million.
His Australian contribution, all from his shuttle use and comprised of six crops of racing age, including current 2-year-olds, has added up to 146 winners headed by the top sprinter La Montagna, a winner seven times, including the Group 1 Stradbroke at Eagle Farm.
A visitor to Willowbend for six successive seasons, 2001-06, the now 13-years-old Monashee Mountain has no 2010  yearlings, but could be heading for even greater achievements here, following his acquisition in 2008 for Racetree and the upgrading of the quality of his mares.
He has looked after over 90 in each of his Racetree seasons, 2008 and 2009, including in the first book daughters of Danehill, Dehere, Last Tycoon, Thunder Gulch, Strategic, Show a Heart, Snippets, Marauding, Grand Lodge, Vain, O’Reilly, Lion Hunter, Centaine, Marscay, Rory’s Jester, Success Express, Falvelon, Encosta de Lago, Volksraad, Sir Tristram, Sequalo, Zeditave and Stravinsky.
