Melbourne, Vic (Feb 7th, 2010) - Exciting filly
Psychologist burst on to the Blue Diamond scene after
thrashing her rivals on debut in the
Group 3 MRC Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
Psychologist looked a formidable force pre-race as the brown filly paraded. A solid type she handled the crowd without a worry in the world and duly ran right up to her looks.
Trained at the track by Tony Vasil, she bounced straight to the lead for her rider and controlled the race throughout running her rivals off their legs over the final two furlongs as she coasted home to win the 1100 metre dash by a widening four lengths in the class record time of 1:02.67.
Best of the rest was spring stakes-winner She’s Got Gears (Invincible Spirit - Last Minute by Encosta de Lago), who tried hard but had no answer to the brilliance of Psychologist.
Entered for a provincial maiden as well as the Blue Diamond Prelude, Vasil who rides many of his horses work, had faith in the filly to go straight into the stakes event.
“I jumped on her on Tuesday and just went wow!…that was enough to convince me to run here,” said Vasil.
“Over the last three or four weeks, she has just got better and better.”
Questioned on whether the filly could win a Blue Diamond at her second start, Vasil was cautiously optimistic.
“She hasn’t been shin-sore at all and it’s a fortnight away… she’s a very laid back horse, so I can’t see why she wouldn’t get there if she pulls up well,” Vasil said.
“She’s beaten the best fillies around barring Crystal Lily, so you would have to think she would be in the mix.”
Winning rider Mark Zahra was delighted with the filly saying she “did it well within herself” in the run and gave no indication of the speed she at which she was travelling.
“It felt like she floated over the track,” Zahra said. “It was so smooth and she just felt like she was going easily. I was really surprised when I was told the time she ran.”
Psychologist was purchased by her Hong Kong based owner Raymond Ngai for $120,000 from the draft of Bylong Park Thoroughbreds at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale - Part Two.
Bred by Bylong Park, she is the second foal and second winner for the unraced Danzero mare Miss Conception, whose first foal Big Tony was a handy juvenile in Brisbane last season.
“She’s always been a bit of a star, a very strong determined type since she was a weanling,” said David Burke of Bylong Park.
“To get $120,000 for a Choisir filly in the Easter Part Two sale tells you what a good sort she is.”
A daughter of Group Two winner Prefer an Angel, Miss Conception does not have a yearling for the sales this year having missed in 2007, but was covered by Psychologist’s sire Choisir last spring.
Psychologist was the 23rd stakes-winner worldwide for Choisir and is his fifth in Australia this season.
