Melbourne, Vic (March 3rd, 2010) - The third and final day of part one of the 2010 Inglis Premier yearling sale has concluded with the three days’ trade recording increases across the board highlighted by the average rising 30% on last year’s figure.
The final day’s top two sellers were by Arrowfield stallions.
The top lot was a colt by Starcraft knocked down to leading South Australian trainer Leon Macdonald for $300,000.
Macdonald saw off stiff international competition to secure the chestnut from the West Australian Belmont Classic stakes winner, Tayasu Run (by Tayasu Tsuyoshi), a three-quarter-sister to the Group 1 West Australian Derby winner The Bukhra (by Cheraw) and Listed winner Mouser (by Belele).
Third session sale topper a colt by Starcraft
The next highest amount paid was $240,000 for a filly by Flying Spur.
From the winning imported mare Witwatersrand (by Unfuwain), she was offered as part of the large Yallambee Stud draft and was knocked down to New Zealander, Paul Willetts. Built in the mould of her sire, the filly is another shining example of the progeny by the son of Danehill who continually goes about his job year-in and year-out.
Great results by Australian-bred thoroughbreds on the track in South Africa has seen a number of agents and trainers attend the Premier sale and two bay colts by Coolmore Stud’s Fastnet Rock were knocked down to Form Bloodstock from Cape Town for more than $200,000.
The first of them to go from through the ring was out of the Encosta de Lago mare Scarcity, a winning sister to the Group 3 heroine Brockman’s Lass, selling for $220,000, from the draft of Yallambee Stud, while the other colt was out of Zakuro (by Hurricane Sky), a winner of seven races and black type placed, who also sold to them, this time for $200,000 from the draft of Crowning Stone. A few lots earlier they had paid $210,000 for a chestnut colt by Rock of Gibraltar from the stakes winning Zabeel mare Warm Smytzer, offered by Makybe.
Another yearling offered by Makybe, that is on the way to South Africa, was selected by bloodstock agent James Bester, who paid $150,000 for a filly by Encosta de Lago from Smytzer’s Trish (by Geiger Counter).
Victorian trainers were amongst the buyers again today with the state’s leading trainer Peter Moody paying $200,000 for a bay colt by Encosta de Lago from the stakes placed mare, Wichita (by Umatilla). Moody has had great success with the family having trained her black type daughters Our Quivira (by Spinning World & 6 wins) and Eshaw (by Chief Bearhart & 3 wins).
Last year’s Melbourne Cup winning trainer Mark Kavanagh wasn’t about to be left out of the fireworks at Oaklands and he paid $170,000 for a bay son of Fastnet Rock from the draft of Swettenham Stud. Offered as lot 548, the colt is from Artful Whisper (by Machiavellian), and although his dam wasn’t a winner, she does hail from the family of Storm Bird.
Gross receipts for Wednesday’s session totalled $8,307,500 for the 121 yearlings sold - a clearance rate of 74% with the day’s average coming in at $68,657, along with a median of $50,000.
“The record of Melbourne graduates speaks for itself and with that reputation growing all the time, there was plenty of incentive for buyers to be here at Oaklands this week,” Inglis Director Peter Heagney said.
“The vendors who have offered quality yearlings have been duly rewarded…and the results that have unfolded here over the past three days reflect this.”
“Once again, the clearance rate was looking a little disappointing during the day …which was a shame as we started the day off so well… it picked up and without sounding like a broken record it does indicate that there is an interest in — and a market for — quality yearlings.”
“Of course plenty of shrewd buyers are well aware we still have plenty of nice prospects to be offered tomorrow (Thursday) in part two of the sale and although they lack the pedigree – that does not mean they will lack performance on the track in the future.”
Part Two of the Inglis Premier sale will commence at 11am on Thursday and to kick off the day’s trade is a chestnut filly by Coolmore’s Rock of Gibraltar from the Gone West mare, Balade Russe.
Once again Inglis will offer an on-line bidding facility and the sale will be broadcast on the company’s website throughout the day.
