Premier off to a solid start

Melbourne Vic (March 1st, 2010) - The first day of trade at the Inglis Premier yearling sale has wound up at the Oakland’s Junction complex with a colt by Exceed and Excel selling for $300,000 taking the opening session honours.

Victorian trainer Mick Price joined forces with Bluesky Thoroughbreds to secure the grey colt from the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce stakes winning De Lago Mist (by Encosta de Lago), a descendant of the family of  Wanted and last Saturday’s Group 3 winner Shrapnel, from the draft of Three Bridges Thoroughbreds.

The next highest amount paid was $200,000 by McDonald Racing for a filly by Stratum offered by Victorian Farm Burnewang North.  Offered as lot 64 the bay filly was out of the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes winner Coupe (by Spinning World).

One of many international visitors, Guy Mulcaster from New Zealand, paid $180,000 for a bay filly by Starcraft from Debutante Robe (by Admire Vega) from the draft of Bellerive Stud.  While a colt by Lonhro from Fashion Week (by Dehere) caught the eye of  Ricky Yiu, trainer of Hong Kong’s top rated sprinter Sacred Kingdom, selling for $170,000.

Earlier in the day, Yiu had paid $130,000, for a bay colt by Exceed and Excel out of the Canny Lad mare, Best O’Barossa, from the draft of Swettenham Stud.

Star Thoroughbreds, Denise Martin paid $170,000 for a colt and a filly.  The colt, a bay, was by O’Reilly from Frankish (by Carolingian) and the filly, a chestnut, by Starcraft from the Beautiful Crown mare Bella Inez, a non-winner that hails from the family of the Caulfield Guineas winner, In Top Swing (by Beautiful Crown).

Earlier in the day the half-brother to Tawqeet by Deep Impact was purchased by Japanese interests for $150,000.

Gross receipts for Monday’s session totalled $9,007,500, up $2million on the corresponding session from a year ago, for the 126 yearlings sold a clearance rate of 74%.  The average at this stage is running at $71,488, a rise of 30% from 2009, with a 33% gain on the median to $60,000.

“This session illustrates that the market is on the way back up,” explained William Inglis Director, Peter Heagney.
“Last year the sale was dominated by one buyer and this year we are seeing buyers from all over the place selecting some nice prospects”
“While the clearance rate was looking a little wobbly for a while it picked up towards the end of the day and the figures are very good indicating that there is an interest in—and a market for—quality yearlings.”

The first lot through the ring tomorrow is a chestnut filly by Encosta de Lago out of the stakes placed It’s Who Deanie (by Fuji Kiseki) from the draft of Makybe at 11am.
