Lindsay Park Stud has announced that Group Two winner Wilander (Exceed And Excel – Scandinavia by Snippets) will be commencing stud duties in 2010 at its historic Barossa Valley base.
A $625,000 Easter Yearling graduate, Wilander was purchased by John Ferguson and under the guidance of trainer Lee Freedman he won his first two starts as a juvenile. An eight length debut win at Ballarat (1100m) was then followed up with a two and a half length victory in the Group Three Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) defeating the likes of Golden Slipper runner-up Von Costa De Hero and fellow Exceed And Excel colt Exceedingly Good.

Wilander to stand at Lindsay Park Stud in South Australia
At three, Wilander trained on to claim the Group Two Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at Weight For Age level defeating older horses such as Lucky Secret and Kaphero. This victory cemented his ranking as one of the leading three year-old sprinters in Australia.
A further victory in the Listed Bob Hoysted and a close up fourth in the Group One Lightning Stakes gave Wilander a three year-old timeform rating of 122, equal with Northern Meteor (2009 fee $33,000) and champion filly Samantha Miss. He retired with a race record of 10 starts 4-1-0 with prize money earnings of $342,850.
Wilander’s pedigree is constantly growing in stature. His sire is one of Danehill’s most brilliant sons Exceed And Excel; already the producer of 22 stakes winners. His dam Scandinavia was a highly talented Group Two winner and four times placed at Group One level. She has also produced Wilander’s three quarter brother and Group One winner Magnus along with Helsinge, dam of the exceptional filly Black Caviar.
The Danehill/Snippets cross that Wilander possesses is that also of high class two and three year-old Snitzel, now a successful young sire. His second dam Song Of Norway (by Vain) produced four stakes winners and rounds out what is a gifted, tough and precocious colonial family.
Lindsay Park Stud’s Managing Director Sam Hayes is buoyant about their new acquisition. He explains “Wilander was a $625,000 yearling, a Group winning two-year-old and three-year-old with an outstanding pedigree. That is a recipe that works.”
Hayes believes that Wilander will fill a niche in Lindsay Park Stud’s lineup. “We have been looking for a speed influenced Danehill line stallion to compliment our roster and Wilander fits the bill perfectly” he says.
Wilander will stand his first season at the introductory fee of $8,800 (inc. GST).
