Australian sprinters are set to star at the Singapore International meeting at Kranji racecourse this Sunday.
Eagle Falls and Gold Trail are two of nine contenders that will bravely take on the local star Rocket Man in the Group I KrisFlyer Sprint (1200m) while Gloria De Campeao returns for the Singapore Airlines International Cup (2000m).
The inaugural running of the Singapore Airlines International Cup, in 2000, marked the opening of Kranji with the locally trained Ouzo (Oregon – Halloween by War Hawk) taking the purse. The following year Luca Cumani won the race with Endless Hall (Saddlers’ Hall – Endless Joy by Law Society) and ever since the event has regularly attracted some of the best middle-distance horses from Australia, Europe and Asia.
This year is no expectation with a purse of S$3million (A$2.4m) the race is likely to be the strongest ever. Amongst Gloria De Campeao’s rival’s is the World Cup runners-up Lizard’s Desire (Lizard Island ex Annsfield by Northfields) the Grade 1 Dubai Duty Free winner, Al Shemali (Medicean ex Bathilde by Generous) and last years’ Singapore International Cup runners-up Presvis (Sakhee ex Forest Fire by Never So Bold) set to throw down another challenge.
The S$1 million (A$800,100) KrisFlyer International Sprint (1200m), due to its strategic position on the racing calendar, has become a favourite target for the top-sprinters from Australia and Hong Kong on their way to England for another leg of the Global Sprint Challenge.
Last year, Sacred Kingdom (Encosta de Lago ex Courtroom Sweetie by Zeditave) put in a superb performance and silenced the Kranji crowd by lowering the colours of local favourite Rocket Man (Viscount ex Macrosa by McGinty).
Rocket Man’s connections are out to go one better on Sunday and they will face challenges from the Australian duo of Eagle Falls (ex Desina by Desert King) and Gold Trail (ex Trail of Gold by Danewin), both by Hussonet. While, the Hong Kong trained trio of Happy Zero (Danzero ex Have Love by Canny Lad), Joy And Fun (Cullen ex Gin Player by Defensive Play), and Green Birdie (Catbird ex Mrs Squillionaire by Last Tycoon) all add to the speed test.
