The HTBA Annual Awards Night and Dinner was conducted in the Scone Cup Raceday Marquee on Wednesday night, May 12th.

Attended by 350 guests, and hosted by Aushorse and SKY Channel’s Jo McKinnon, the Hunter’s finest were recognised.

The Inglis Champion Sire was, for the third year in succession, Coolmore’s Encosta de Lago with Tom Magnier accepting the award from Inglis’ Deputy Chairman Arthur Inglis.

The Kentucky Equine Research/ Barastoc Champion First Season Sire went to this season’s exciting young stallion, Stratum. Widden’s Antony Thompson was presented with the award by Dr Peter Huntington of KER.

The Scone Equine Hospital Champion Broodmare award was given, for the second year running, to Tracy’s Element, dam of Australia’s best racehorse this season, Typhoon Tracy.

In a double for breeder John Hutchins, Typhoon Tracy took out the Goldner’s Transport Champion Racehorse award, while the International Animal Health 2YO of the Year went to the AJC Champagne Stakes winner Skilled, bred by Woodlands Stud.

Woodlands Stud figured again in the Ladd Hudson Architects 3YO Of the Year and like John Hutchins, John Ingham, representing the Ingham Family and Woodlands Stud, made two trips to the podium having also collected the award for Skilled.

The Murray Bain Service to Industry Award went to Barry Hall, a stalwart of Livestock Transport and a friend to so many in the Hunter. Jeff Watt spoke glowingly of the character that is Barry Hall.

The President’s Award was this year presented to Peter Orton for his outstanding contribution to the thoroughbred industry. Despite his own protestations that he was “too young to be receiving this” Peter Orton was fittingly recognised for a wonderful life’s work to date. A heartfelt dedication speech by long-time friend Henry Plumptre and added to by Wayne Bedggood, was very well-received. Peter received a standing ovation when announced as the winner.

President of the HTBA, Wayne Bedggood of Cressfield Stud, thanked all in attendance and remarked that the evening seems to get bigger and better every year.

The Scone HTBA Inglis yearling sale kicks off at 10.30am Thursday May 13th at White Park Scone and the second session will be held Sunday May 16th.

Of course most attendees at the Awards Dinner will also be at the amazing $1.22million Scone Cup Raceday on Friday, May 14th featuring the $770K Scone Inglis Guineas, the Listed Emirates Park Stud Scone Cup and the Listed Yarraman Park Stud/HTBA Dark Jewel Classic. It is the richest day of racing ever, on an Australian country track, and, most likely, the World.
